We gaan luisteren naar de Noordzee! Vanuit de Ambassade van de Noordzee maken we een reis langs de acht landen van de Noordzee met podcastmakers Jesper Buursink en Eli Guerrero. Tijdens de reis gaan we op zoek naar verhalen van mensen, dingen en dieren in, op of rond de zee en geven hen een stem in de podcast Voices of the North Sea.

Ambassade van de Noordzee/Embassy of the North Sea:
The Embassy of the North Sea departs from the starting point that the sea owns itself. By carefully listening to the sea and life in it, the Embassy of the North Sea researches how non-humans - from phytoplankton to cod fish, to the North Sea itself - can become full-fledged members of society.
By collecting this rich palette of voices and soundscapes, the Embassy of the North Sea builds a network of representatives that will work towards emancipation of the sea and life in it.

The first two seasons of Voices of the North Sea (Netherlands and Belgium) will be in Dutch and in the rest of the European countries we will slowly switch to English.

In een bootje rustig dobberend op het water klinkt de wereld doorgaans heel kalm. Zachtjes klotsend water tegen de boot, een briesje wind, geroep van vogels (meestel meeuwen) en van ander verkeer op het water. Zelfs op het druk bevaren Noordzeekanaal kun je prima tot rust komen. Maar ónder water klinkt het Noordzeekanaal heel anders. Dan hoor je ineens dat het Noordzeekanaal eigenlijk een snelweg is die door een industrieterrein loopt. Je hoort een vrijwel constant geratel van schroeven, het gestamp van motoren en gerinkel van kettingen. Onder water leeft van alles. We leren steeds meer over hoe vissen en andere waterdieren kunnen horen en communiceren middels geluid. Je kunt je wel voorstellen hoeveel last ze hebben van de luide ruis die onder water in het Noordzee kanaal klinkt.
Deze opnames zijn gemaakt vanaf een bootje op het Noordzeekanaal tegenover de Westhaven. In je linkeroor hoor je het geluid boven water en in je rechteroor het geluid onder water. Deze twee opnames zijn tegelijkertijd gemaakt, dus je kunt goed het verschil horen.

Vissen kunnen horen. Horen ze dan ook een storm aankomen? Een gesprek met marien ecoloog Katja Phillipart EN we reizen verder langs de Belgische kust op zoek naar stemmen van de Noordzee: in deze aflevering de echo van lege bunkers uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Maar ook gaan we luisteren naar het geluid van de Noordzee onderwater, naar boze garnalenvissers en een symfonie van de Haringvlietsluis.
Voor elk seizoen van 'Voices of the North Sea' podcast vertellen we een verhaal puur in geluid. De haringvlietsluis is een enorme kering die ons beschermd tegen de Noordzee. Radiomaker Jesper Buursink duikt samen met Niels Kuiken, planmatig beheerder, en Maarten van der Plas, de objectbeheerder, het importante complex van de Haringvlietsluizen in en gaat op zoek naar het geluid van de Noordzee.
JOMOPANS is een Europees onderzoek naar geluidsdata uit de Noordzee en op welke manieren ze overlast veroorzaken bij het onderwaterleven. Op de onderzoeksboot van Rijkswaterstaat praten Niels Kinneging, de coördinator van JOMOPANS in Nederland en Roelant Snoek, de installateur van de hydrofoons, over wat we precies onderwater horen.

De toekomst van de garnalenvisserij ziet er niet altijd rooskleurig uit. Dan helpt het niet als de garnalenvissers ook nog eens hun netten kapot vissen op de containers van de MSC Zoe die op de zeebodem blijven liggen. Radiomaker Jesper Buursink bezoekt de kotter van garnalenvisser John Lukkien in de haven van Lauwersoog.
Barbara Rodenburg-Geerstema van de Goede Vissers vangt op een eerlijke, respectvolle duurzame manier vis in de Waddenzee. Radiomaker Jesper Buursink gaat met ze mee om plankton te zoeken.
