Description
Celebrating the people who help us succeed at Vol State and other ultras. Those people who help us get to the start, get through the miles and then put up with us afterwards. They always love and support us no matter how muddy or sweaty we are. On this show we acknowledge and talk with participants, friends, family, crew and most of all, Road Angels.

Sam is the first of the Trash Pandas that I interviewed so you can get a male's eye view of this group that stuck together for at least 9 days!
All women and especially mothers should listen to this call whether they run Vol State or not.Britney talks about her personal transformation in a courageous way that not many people will do.
Brad is a lot of funbut also a man with a purpose. He raised over $25,000 for Tennessee Baptist Children's Home. And talk about pressure…he's from Union City so everyone alongthe course knew him and was cheering for him You can donate hereif you'd like TennesseeChildren.org
Imagine what it's like to run this race for the first time, not really knowing anything about the ra ce…AND being in second place so people along the way aren't even set up yet.Todays' guest had just that experience, Chri finished in 4 days, 19 hours and 58 minutes!
One of the few Vol State folks that can easily be identified using just her first name, like Cher and Reba. We have our own Shenoa! Of course, you'll hear about her pack and who doesn't want to know what's in it? More importantly, though, Shenoa gives extremely useful tips on running your race and how to deal with things that come up. This one really is a "don't miss" episode.
This is a special event! We’ve had runners, crews, and road angels. Now we have our 2024 photographer!
I think everyone know the great photos she took in 2024 and hopefully, she'll be back. But you can listen to her tell us how she came to photographing ultras and especially Vol State and hear her talk about some of the special shots she got.
You'll be surprised by the perspectives and thoughts from Dr. Downer. She traveled most of the course alone and noticed all the beauty of the entire 314 miles. See how a scientist viewed this beautiful Tennessee course.
This woman is hysterical (funny type, not the other). You'll hear so much about the race that you'd never even think of. She's a wealth of knowledge who also absorbs so much information from other people. She shares all that info with us in this interview.
Hal is a trooper. He made it over 200 miles on destroyed feet and only DNFed because he overslept. I'm pretty partial to this one since his wife saved my day 1 with a PayDay bar!
Lisa has more energy than almost anyone I've ever met. She and her Trash Panda gang have the best stories from this year's Vol State. Make sure you aren't drinking anything that you might spit out when you listen to this one!
James took the lessons he learned from 2024's race (with significant foot issues) and remedied most of it in 2025. He helps you know what might happen and what to do when it does. This is a must listen for lessons learned.
This is the best "why" i've ever heard. Andy talks about what it's like to "take orders" from a veteran who had a goal to ensure he finished Vol State - and he did. You can learn a lot just from listening to this call. You can find out more about Andy's ventures as an RD at A1 Ultra Events – Premier FloridaTrail Running Races Or at Florida's Premier Trail Running | TampaRaces | Tampa, FL
Listen to the joy in Anglea's voice as she discusses the trials and tribulations of her incomplete 2023 run and then her 2025 redemption Run! It's funny and heartwarming.
Richard's race discussion is almost as mesmerizing as his accent. Enjoy his recounting, especially about the "mad dogs for next 40 miles".
In this episode Jan (The Meat Wagon Lady) gives us tips and tricks that you're not going to hear pretty much anywhere else. It's a composite of her vast experience and knowledge both as an endurance athlete (one who has done Vol State and been involved in it for many years) and as a coach.
Meet the Meat Wagon Lady as Season 2 (Memorable Moments) begins. This week she'll tell you all about her experience with Vol State and how she operates to help you get to the finish line. But there's more next week so tune in to both to find out what you really need to know!
After a long trek from Linden, you'll be surprised when you come upon "Tay's Stop and Flop"! Another Road Angel braved the podcast world to let you know you won't be alone.
Recording this interview made me feel like I was back out there on the course again. These two funny and dedicated Road Angels will get your gratitude and enthusiasm pumping like never before. I can't wait to meet them in person. I know you'll love this episode.
This has to be one of my favorite episodes because of the close friendship I have with Kaz. She is a PhD, a coach, a stellar runner and a fantastic friend. Today she gives us several mental performance tips and tricks and shows you how she applied them all in her Vol State race in 2023. They are tactics she teaches her athletes. You have to listen to this one.
You can find more about Kaz at www.MettleRunning.com
What a great attitude this guy has! The entire time he was out there he was reminding himself that this was, indeed, a vacation. We all can learn a lot from him in this episode. AND, he has a blog that has tons of photos from 2024 as well. Check it out at
