If you’ve ever wondered how trauma impacts your mental health or how you can heal from it, this episode is a must-listen. Robert’s groundbreaking work in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy has transformed the lives of over 1,000 individuals, including CEOs, athletes, and even high-profile celebrities. In this episode, we dive deep into how EMDR works, why it’s so effective, and how it can help you overcome the emotional baggage that might be holding you back. Key Takeaways from Robert’s Insights: What is EMDR? Robert explains how EMDR isn’t just another talk therapy—it’s a structured process that helps you rewire your brain and nervous system. By addressing the root causes of trauma, EMDR allows you to release the emotional weight of past experiences in as little as three days. Understanding Trauma: Trauma isn’t just about major life events; it can stem from smaller, repeated experiences that make us feel powerless. Robert shares how these "small T traumas" can shape our beliefs and patterns, often without us realizing it. Breaking Patterns: Robert highlights how our subconscious patterns can keep us stuck in cycles of anxiety, depression, or self-doubt. EMDR helps identify and reprogram these patterns, freeing us to live a more joyful and fulfilling life. Chuck’s Personal Experience with EMDR During this conversation, I shared my own transformative journey with EMDR therapy and how Robert’s work helped me let go of decades-old emotional pain. After just a few sessions, I can confidently say that past traumas no longer hold power over me. If you’ve been carrying a heavy emotional load, I encourage you to explore this life-changing therapy. Hey Warriors Unmasked family! Chuck Thuss here, bringing you a truly meaningful episode that’s close to my heart. In Episode 170, I had the honor of sitting down with Dr. Michelle Sherman and her mom, Deanne Sherman, two incredible women who are shining a much-needed light on an often-overlooked group: the supporters. Whether you’re a spouse, sibling, friend, or child of someone managing mental health challenges or trauma, this episode is packed with insights, tools, and encouragement just for you. Dr. Sherman, a clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience, and Deanne, a mental health advocate and teacher, share their wealth of knowledge and personal stories about how to navigate the complex role of supporting someone who is struggling. From the emotional toll it can take to the importance of self-care, their conversation is a game-changer for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed, lonely, or burnt out while caring for someone they love. Key Takeaways from the Episode: Recognizing the Caregiver’s Role: Often, those who support loved ones with mental health challenges feel invisible. Dr. Sherman and Deanne emphasize the importance of seeing and honoring the sacrifices these caregivers make. Self-Care is Essential, Not Optional: As Deanne beautifully states, taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Whether it’s taking five minutes to breathe, delegating responsibilities, or finding a community of support, self-care is the foundation of being able to help others. Advocating for Support: Caregivers often feel guilty about asking for help, but Dr. Sherman reminds us that we can’t pour from an empty cup. Whether it’s leaning on a friend, joining a support group, or simply taking time for yourself, these small steps make a big difference. The Stigma Around Mental Illness: Michelle and Deanne also address the societal stigma that isolates both individuals managing mental illness and their families. They challenge listeners to lean in, rather than withdraw, when someone in their circle is struggling. Tools and Resources for Caregivers The Shermans recently co-authored two incredible books: Loving Someone with a Mental Illness or History of Trauma: Skills, Hope, and Strength for Your Journey I’m Not Alone: A Teen’s Guide to Living with a Parent Who’s Experienced a Mental Illness or History of Trauma These books are more than just informative—they’re interactive guides packed with reflection exercises, practical skills, and stories from people who’ve been there. Whether you’re an adult or a teen, you’ll find actionable advice to help you navigate the challenges of supporting someone with mental health issues while maintaining your own well-being. You can find their books at Seeds of Hope Books or on Amazon. A Message to Caregivers One of the most powerful takeaways from this episode is the reminder that caregivers matter too. Dr. Sherman and Deanne’s mantra, “We see you, we hear you, and we’re with you,” resonates deeply. If you’ve ever felt alone in your journey, know that there is a community of people who understand and want to support you. Brune, an Emmy Award-winning producer and former Executive Producer of Good Morning America, World News Now, and E! News Live. While Ray’s career achievements are nothing short of incredible, this episode dives deeper into his personal journey, revealing decades of trauma and bullying that shaped him into the resilient person he is today. Ray’s story starts with a childhood marred by relentless bullying, beginning in third grade and lasting through high school. Ray faced severe emotional scars that haunted him for over 40 years, culminating in a CPTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) diagnosis. Despite his successes in television, Ray found himself grappling with unresolved pain that nearly derailed his life. This discovery was a turning point in his healing journey. Forgiveness and Healing: Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Ray’s story is his ability to forgive those who caused him pain. By forgiving his bullies and even his father, Ray found peace and began to live a lighter, more fulfilled life. The Art of Being Bullied Ray’s book, The Art of Being Bullied, is a powerful exploration of his experiences and the process he went through to heal. It blends memoir, psychology, and practical advice on how anyone can reframe their own trauma. Whether through art or other methods, Ray’s book offers a unique and inspiring roadmap to forgiveness and emotional freedom. You can find The Art of Being Bullied on Amazon and other platforms. In this episode of Warriors Unmasked, Chuck Thuss sits down with Bret Davis, a leader who has seen it all—from the world of professional sports to rising through the ranks in the medical field. Bret shares how growing up as the son of an NFL coach shaped his unique perspective on leadership, motivation, and handling pressure. From observing legendary figures like Don Shula and Bill Cowher, to developing his own leadership style, Bret’s experiences culminated in his Amazon #1 best-selling self-help book, Bretisms. Throughout the episode, Bret and Chuck explore how leadership is not just about victories, but about dealing with adversity and how vulnerability can actually be a sign of strength. Bret shares his “Bretisms”—insights drawn from a lifetime of experience in high-stress environments, designed to help people reduce anxiety and build confidence in everyday life. Key Takeaways from Bret’s Journey: Growing up in an NFL family taught Bret invaluable lessons about leadership, adaptability, and handling pressure. Moving every couple of years for his dad’s career exposed him to different cultures, teaching him how to fit in and stand out as a leader. One of Bret’s key leadership principles is “Take the blame, shed the credit”. Great leaders, he notes, are quick to give credit to others while taking responsibility for failures. Bret also emphasizes the importance of vulnerability in leadership. In high-pressure environments, it’s crucial to open up and lean on your support system rather than trying to be “bulletproof.” Bretisms and Their Impact Bret’s book, Bretisms, outlines 30 life principles that can help reduce anxiety and build confidence. One of his most impactful sayings is, “You can’t trip over what’s behind you”—a reminder to let go of past failures and focus on moving forward. Through real-life examples from his childhood in the NFL, Bret demonstrates how letting go of perfectionism and embracing failure can lead to personal and professional growth. What’s Coming Next? Chuck reflects on how Bret’s perspective on failure has inspired him to rethink his own approach to perfectionism. He challenges listeners to adopt the mindset that failure is okay, as long as you’re learning and growing from it. Bret’s stories of watching NFL players handle adversity off the field provide listeners with a behind-the-scenes look at the mental toughness it takes to succeed in high-pressure environments—whether in sports, business, or everyday life. Hey Warriors Unmasked family, Chuck Thuss here, and I’m excited to welcome you back to a brand new season of Warriors Unmasked! In this special episode, we’re taking things in a fresh direction, while staying true to the heart of what makes our show great: sharing powerful stories of courage, perseverance, and mental health. It’s been an amazing and busy summer for me, filled with travel, coaching, and speaking engagements. I’ve had the privilege of connecting with so many of you, and I want to thank you for the gift of your time. Your support and the meaningful conversations we’ve shared have been nothing short of incredible. But now, it’s time for a relaunch – and I’m thrilled to share what’s coming up for Warriors Unmasked! What’s New this Season? Warriors Unmasked is evolving. We’re giving our website and social media a fresh new look, but the soul of the show – those raw, real, and inspiring stories – remains. You can expect more solo episodes from me, where I’ll dive into various topics around mental health, self-care, and personal growth. I’m going to let you in on more of my own journey, the challenges I face, and how I continue to grow, so that together, we can tackle life’s hurdles. We’ve also enhanced the resource page on our website to provide you with even more tools to help you along your journey. Whether you’re navigating stress, mental health challenges, or just want to level up your self-care, we’ve got your back! Reflecting on Life and Loss This episode is a deeply personal one for me. I share updates on my family, including my daughters Bethany and Brooke, who are doing incredible things. But I also open up about the ongoing grief I feel after the loss of my mom in 2022. There are days when the pain still hits hard, and I know many of you understand what that feels like. A special moment happened recently that I believe was a sign from my mom – a cardinal appeared on my windowsill, reminding me that she’s always with me, even if she’s no longer here physically. It was a beautiful reminder that while grief never truly goes away, love stays with us. The Power of Self-Care As always, I’m a huge advocate for self-care, and this episode is packed with tips to help you manage stress and prioritize your mental health. From daily gratitude to meditation and exercise, I share the practices that have been life-changing for me. Trust me, when you make yourself the number one priority in your life, everything changes. Are you making yourself a priority? If not, today’s a great day to start! Exciting Changes for the Podcast I’m also incredibly excited to share that we’ve got some amazing guests lined up for this season. Expect more stories of courage, perseverance, and triumph over mental health challenges. From athletes like Trevor Gillies, who has found unique ways to manage his mental health, to innovators like Daniel Picard, who has developed groundbreaking solutions for anxiety – there’s so much to look forward to. One big update: My incredible partner Clint Malarchuk has moved on to focus on his work with Ranch Teammates for Life, where he continues to do incredible things for mental health. Clint will always be a part of Warriors Unmasked, and I’m proud to call him one of our ambassadors. Join the Journey If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this episode, it’s that we’re all in this together. Whether you’re dealing with grief, stress, or just need some inspiration to keep moving forward, this community is here for you.
