Meet Rowan Jetté Knox, the award-winning Canadian writer and human rights advocate who embodies the power of embracing change and living authentically. Rowan courageously shares his family's journey towards acceptance of both his middle child and wife's transgender identity in his bestselling memoir "Love Lives Here". This journey, marked by vulnerability and unconditional love, has normalized the existence of LGBTQ2S+ families and sparked international change. Rowan's advocacy extends beyond his personal narrative, confronting the stigma of mental illness and championing the rights of transgender youth. His work has earned him recognition such as the Order of Ottawa. Rowan's story is a testament to the transformative power of embracing truth and living authentically. He first started questioning his own gender while in therapy for deep trauma. Despite the challenges, Rowan has learned valuable lessons about self-worth, the importance of community, and the intentional risks necessary for growth. He reminds us that you don't have to transition to be Trans and encourages those questioning their gender to seek out Trans voices. Rowan's journey, including his own transition and non-monogamous relationships, is a powerful example of what it means to live a life true to oneself. EPISODE TAKEAWAYS Rowan's Journey: In 2014 Rowan would have described his family as a Mom, Dad and three sons. Shortly thereafter their middle child came out as a Transgender girl (later, non-binary), and then less than two years after Rowan’s spouse came out as a Transgender woman. Consciousness of Truth: “We are more subconsciously aware of our truths than we think we are.” When Rowan’s middle child came out he was, at the time, a well-known “mommy blogger” and the post sharing the coming out story of his child went completely viral. There was a little hate but also a massive out pouring of love. Expanding Love: Rowan’s family adopted their middle child’s best friend at the age of 15 and beautifully extended their circle of love. It was much easier for Rowan to give love and support to his Trans family members than it was to give it to himself. Self-Worth: When the world constantly teaches you that you are NOT worthy of love, it’s nearly impossible to find yourself worthy. Rowan and his wife Zoè are in a Polycule relationship that began in 2022 and now they all live together, very happily, in Toronto. Important Reminders: Rowan wants to remind everyone that you do NOT have to transition to be Trans. If you’re questioning your gender start following some trans folks on social media listen to what they have to say and learn from the source. Learn more about your ad choices. This pivot allowed her to build the brand and its impact. The Power of Representation: Books play a crucial role in providing representation for kids. Kind Cotton's monthly book fairs in the community and different schools help ensure young readers see themselves in the stories they read. Redefining Success: Kaitlin's definition of success has evolved from selling one product a day to feeling good about the positive change she's creating in the world. Her goal now is to put a million books into the hands of kids. Kindness Rooted in Justice: Kaitlin shares her definition of kindness as being rooted in justice, equity, and openness to change. It's about holding nuanced empathy, not just being nice. This episode was originally released Feb 28, 2023 as episode 34. To listen to Lili's episode from Dec 2023 on The Theatre Podcast, click here. --- ORIGINAL NOTES --- Do you remember when our collective hearts broke watching “Connor's mom” breakdown in Dear Evan Hansen? Yeah, that was traumatic! And Lili Thomas does it every single night on stage as she performs the beautiful and devastating role of Cynthia Murphy for the North American touring company of Dear Evan Hansen. The child of two world-renowned classical musicians, Lili made her own path in the arts. She became a triple threat by training extensively in acting, singing, and dancing in addition to, of course, learning several instruments. She plays professionally on 6 different instruments. Lili recently completed the pre-Broadway run of Octet and is an acclaimed vocal coach, choreographer, director, and the hardest job of all, parent of two kids. She’s kind, funny and crazy talented! Follow Lili and learn more on Instagram, grab tickets to see Dear Evan Hansen here, and make sure to stick around to the end of the episode for a fun, dirty joke form Lili! Make sure to follow this podcast everywhere you find podcasts, leave a rating and a review, and slip into our Instagram DMs at @wasitchance. More about Heather via @heather_ vickeryandco on Instagram and Threads, @Braveheather on TikTok, and listen to The Brave Files More about Alan via @theatre_podcast on Instagram and listen to The Theatre Podcast with Alan Seales EPISODE TAKEAWAYS Being exposed to professional musicians helped Lili embrace chance as an entertainer. She randomly started singing with a live band at the age of 5 and people loved it. The thrill was real! Both of Lili’s parents are world-renowned musicians but they didn’t pressure her into playing music, which Lili considers a gift. Lili’s performing love is musical theater - that’s her creative home. She loves playing complex characters and embracing them fully which she does beautifully. It’s really hard to balance being a parent and needing daycare with auditioning (as a job) because it’s not a paying job but must be treated as a job. When she went back to theater it felt like breathing again. This is truly where she's meant to be. She has such a loving and supportive family who love seeing her pursue her dreams. Positivity and energy are the core of who Lili is and that’s counter-intuitive to the role she plays in Dear Evan Hansen. When Lili needs to decompress and get into creative a space she needs total quiet and solitude (just like our co-host, Heather!). The most creative minds are also the most curious ones. Self-taping has become really dangerous for people - it drives perfectionist behaviors and that’s just not possible. It sets unrealistic standards and puts undue pressure on actors (and kids!). Returning to the theater has been part of Lili’s journey toward loving herself and it’s magical. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

More about Heather via @heather_vickeryandco on Instagram, @Braveheather on TikTok, and listen to The Brave Files More about Alan via @theatre_podcast on Instagram and listen to The Theatre Podcast with Alan Seales Episode Takeaways Isaac's Early Love of Performance: From a very young age, Isaac was drawn to the art of female impersonation, fueled by an insatiable desire to perform. This passion led him to attend a prestigious performing arts high school, where he honed his acting skills and nurtured his love of singing. Though fashion would later become a cornerstone of his career, his first love was always the world of performance. A Childhood of Contrasts: Growing up in a somewhat orthodox Jewish family, Isaac's early life was a study in contrasts. While his upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of tradition, he was also blessed with access to the vibrant worlds of creativity, theatre, and ballet. Armed with a subway pass, he eagerly explored the city, knowing that he craved a different path. Fashion as a Natural Talent: For Isaac, fashion is akin to cooking – some people simply have an innate ability, while others struggle to find their footing. With his father in the industry and a natural affinity for design, fashion came effortlessly to Isaac. Though acting remained his true passion, he recognized that fashion offered a more reliable means of making a living. The Authenticity of Performance: When on stage, Isaac believes in the importance of authenticity and honesty. He wears his heart on his sleeve, allowing his true self to shine through in every performance. This vulnerability is what creates a genuine connection with his audience. The Chanel Opportunity: While partnered with the esteemed House of Chanel, Isaac was offered an “out” from his fashion company. It was easy for him to step away from fashion because it was always a fallback plan. Isaac on Failure: With his trademark wit, Isaac has said, "Sometimes I think I am way better at failure than I am at success. Mostly I fail at things." But in his failures, he has found valuable lessons. He believes that it is through failure that we learn the most and become the best versions of ourselves. A Memoir Worth Reading: Those seeking a deeper understanding of Isaac's extraordinary journey should read his memoir, I.M.: A Memoir. This candid book offers a glimpse into the highs and lows of his life, shedding light on the experiences that have shaped him into the beloved icon he is today. Learn more about your ad choices. An early adopter of Blog Writing, Matthew, found a passion for writing. And then when he discovered YA Queer romance things all started to come together. Stereotypes are based on some type of reality but they don’t have to define us. Matthew wrote his main character, Ezra’s, father to heal his own inner child. Boyfriends is an Unapologetically Queer book and Matthew embraces it! Although Matthew landed an agent with his first book, he wrote four before finally landing on 'The Last Boyfriends Rules for Revenge’ which took off and became a best seller with a massive release. When the Flordia “Don’t Say Gay” bill passed Matthew felt helpless. His book was a way to fight back. He felt free to be open and proud about himself, his queerness and he didn’t care what other people thought. Creatively drunk - being uninhibited - that’s Matthew’s new approach to writing. Ego is required! “If I don’t think that I’m the best I am going to start worrying that I am not the best” Make sure you give your loved ones a chance to show up for you. Don’t make assumptions. “People come of age at different points in their life.” Matthew always puts a positive spin on things and, for him, failure is never a no, it’s a how can I re-route myself. “Failure is a chance to take the scenic route” Learn more about your ad choices. A New York City dream, sans safety net: Alison arrived in NYC in 2008 armed with neither a college degree nor an illustrious alma mater. She relied on her raw talent and tenacity to carve her path. Intuition as a guiding force: Alison possesses a keen sense of self-awareness, always listening to that inner voice that tells her what's right for her career and life. Motherhood meets Broadway: Two weeks pregnant, Alison took on the role of Mrs. Walker in The Who's Tommy in Chicago. Her baby boy soon became a beloved fixture backstage when the show transferred to Broadway, a testament to the warmth of the theatre community. Early beginnings, boundless support: Alison's journey in professional theatre began at age 9 with a starring role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Her supportive family fostered her talent from the very start. Prioritizing passion over tradition: Theatre was Alison's first love. She never regretted missing milestones like Prom; performances were where her heart was. A risk that paid off in spades: During a Mamma Mia! tour hiatus, Alison auditioned for a regional show despite the security of her touring contract. The universe responded immediately: she was offered a lead role in the Broadway production of Mamma Mia! the moment she gave her tour notice. Musical talents extend beyond the stage: Alison and her husband, Matt Magnusson, express their creativity as the band Big Sur Bound, with an album to their credit. Embracing the imperfection of art: Alison believes that "you can't be a perfectionist with art because there is no such thing as perfection." This mindset frees her to take risks and fully express herself creatively. Failure as a teacher, not a shackle: Alison's approach to failure is not to dwell on it, but to learn from it and move forward. This perspective allows her to continually grow as an artist. At the age of 18, she started writing original fiction she was writing her own stories, quit her day job (as a bookseller) at 32, and went into writing full time. She founded E3 Radio in 2009, an online station for queer music and news, and co-created The Qube, a platform for BIPOC and QTPOC creatives. In our interview, Anna shares her journey from aspiring broadcaster to media innovator, discussing her passion project turned full-time gig, E3 Radio, the creation of The Qube, and her mission to amplify marginalized voices. She was a “serious” broadcaster. Anna wanted to be Robin Roberts (the only Black Woman she had ever seen doing this work) She went to school to learn how to do that and ended up working on online broadcasting in the corporate space. E3 Radio was a passion project on the side. It’s important to ask yourself what is the worst-case scenario. Is that really that bad? Get a copy of The Big Leap (get a copy here!) if you’re looking to step into your zone of genius. It’s easier for Anna to give “of” herself than to give “to” herself and there is not enough content out there at the intersection of race and sexuality. She saw a gap and decided to fill it. The QUBE is a podcast production company and a curated platform for Black and Brown podcasts. The QUBE is to podcasting what BET was to television. Balance comes because things ebb and flow - they have to.   There has been real work in unraveling what “corporate” says is successful vs. what we actually know to be successful for us. Learn how to manage freedom. Anna works best when it’s dark outside so she arranges her schedule to accommodate that. The biggest challenge for Anna has been “unlearning” bad corporate behavior. “What does success mean to me today?” It may change and be redefined over and over again. Anna had to learn to own failure because you can’t have success without failure. There is no failure, only feedback. Now she sits on new ideas to see how they develop and transform. Laura Larios is a nervous system coach who’s revolutionizing entrepreneurship for high-achieving women. Our conversation explores the profound impact of the nervous system on our thoughts, decision-making, and ability to avoid burnout, emphasizing the idea that our nervous system shapes our thinking patterns, rather than the other way around. Laura's approach is about fostering awareness of our often-overlooked nervous system, enabling individuals to transition from mere survival to growth and self-improvement. Through her journey from a creative student immersed in theater to a hospitality professional and ultimately a trailblazing entrepreneur, Laura is as compelling as her coaching technique. She credits the Polyvagal Theory as the moment she started to think creatively and out of the box. This is what led to her transformative perspective that integrates the nervous system with entrepreneurial success. Laura's work is a testament to the power of simple, quick exercises that can induce noticeable shifts in our state of being within seconds, potentially leading to the formation of new neurological patterns over time. Alongside practical advice, Laura shares personal reflections on her relationship with failure, re-wiring perfectionist tendencies, and finding valuable learning experiences in moments of discomfort. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand the intrinsic connection between our nervous system and overall well-being. Connect with Laura on LinkedIn and Instagram. The thoughts we have, avoiding burnout, making decisions - our nervous system is core to everything we do in life. Get out of survival mode and into growth. The state of your nervous system creates the thoughts, not the other way around. The body informs the brain. We are not consciously aware of our nervous system all the time - Laura’s work is about creating that awareness. Laura has always been a highly creative person. She did theater in middle school and high school. But it was her Psychology class in High School that really blew her mind. As a Psychology student in college, she realized there was something missing. She felt like things were going in circles. Being in the hospitality industry really prepared her for being an entrepreneur.  When Laura discovered The Polyvagal Theory everything changed and she saw a way to connect the nervous system with entrepreneurship. She started by doing the work on and for herself and then expanded it into a business. You can tell the state of someone's nervous system by the tone of their voice. When we chance the tone of our voice, it effects the people around us. This work is about being able to hold all of the things, the thoughts, emotions etc … and not allowing those things to shut you down. Scientifically proven that improv helps you reduce inhibition. Play is a “blended” state When we’re in a survival state we can’t even find a way to create change because we’re frozen. Eventually, Laura decided to go into this unknown space and build something completely new and it worked! With nervous system work, less is more. The tools are simple and take 30-60 seconds and you can notice a shift within a few seconds. And once your body recognizes a shift you crave more of it. It takes 62-68 days to build a new neuro pattern  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

He started a Facebook group for fans of the show and, thus, became one of the first-ever Broadway Theater social media managers. Not long after that, he auditioned for a role in Spring Awakening and joined the tour. Choose to be close to your goals, even if they are tangential. NEWSFLASH - Alan Seales doesn’t resonate with Sondheim!  Working with Dolly Parton was a highlight for Andy and he was thrilled to act with her in an episode of Heartstrings that featured a Gay storyline with a happy ending. Tune in to hear why The Met Gala is a super important event for the theatre world (which most people don’t know!). Being part of the Wicked Tour was like “a warm bath” for Andy because the show is always a wonderful, welcoming experience. Mientus has a rare neurological disorder called HNPP (Hereditary Neuropathy with Pressure Palsies). Andy is not just a live theater actor, he’s also a TV and Film actor including playing the supervillain, Hartley Rathaway, in The Flash who is an openly Gay character in the series! Failure is one of Andy’s close personal friends. He says he fails several times a week and it never gets easier but it’s always a learning opportunity you can get better at dealing with, most of the time. We often don’t realize how these “small” experiences can have such a big impact. Self-talk is the inner dialogue and story we tell ourselves all day long Katie’s deep seeded negative self-talk was centered around creating and performing for others but never being able to enjoy and experience for herself. Negative self-talk is not inherently good or bad - it’s information and how you process tat information. Mental health was the catalyst for Katie to move away from theater and into the work of coaching. A dangerous eating disorder began to physically affect her ability to sing and perform, which is what she was in school to study. This is when she started to do the internal work to shift her patterns and behaviors. Changing negative self-talk can be very difficult for many people. You can’t just “change your mind” and things are better. Everything requires a game - it’s about the game you’re willing to play. There can be a lot of fear and risk associated with following a purpose or “calling.” The biggest risks Katie felt she took were unknown financial possibilities getting into a newish field with blogging and online magazines and she felt the pressure of risk on being approved of and accepted in these new fields. Everything has a shadow side and can be manipulated. Do all things with integrity. Self-deprecation is dangerous but it helps people bring themselves together and find things in common. The key is recognizing the language you are using on a regular basis. Check yourself by asking this question “Do I want the reality of actually shifting? Or do I just like the drama of trying to figure it out?” Her book, Want Yourself, is based on the curriculum Katie created over the last decade. Discover your own personal “through line.” Katie has embraced being flexible in order to achieve desired outcomes. It’s all give and take WANTCast is in its 9th year. Mark started as an intern working on The Hill while still a college student. This led to eventually working on Hillary Clinton’s first presidential campaign. Being around politics as a teenager sparked this interest in public office. Safe was about telling Mark and his family’s story and seeing if it could make a difference for other families. Several members of Mark’s family had come from Foster Care and it always held a special place in his heart. Growing up Gay often comes with a sense of shame, especially for people growing up in the 80’s. What is One Iowa - The idea came to Mark in the shower (where all good ideas start). The message was not really about equality, it was about fairness. Thefosterparent.com was founded because Mark knew he could really offer was a way to recruit more foster parents and get more awareness of this issue. They do this via very targeted micro-campaigns.  Foster Care should always be about reunification but sometimes that simply is not possible. Mark connected with Lara Love Hardin as a Foster Parent who was empathetic towards the parents who have had children entered into the system. Taking risks is a major part of parenting but as a foster parent, it’s more difficult because of all the rules.  FINAL page of the book Failure always leads to a lesson, or perhaps the opportunity simply wasn’t the right thing for you. Alison didn’t always intend to write Queer books because she didn’t know she was gay until she was 33. Most of her writing when she was younger was Young Adult Fantasy Writing “The Charm Offensive” helped Alison come out and embrace her Queerness From a young age Alison knew she wanted to be a writer or a teacher. Low self confidence got in the way of writing at first. In her mid twenties Alison was super risk adverse and had a massive fear of failure that turned her off of writing and taking the teaching path. Alison wrote the first draft of “The Charm Offensive” in six days - it felt like a fever dream. Sharing that messy first draft was the intentional risk Alison took that lead to what is now an international best seller. Alison writes very personal stories and, thus, gives a lot of herself to the audience when she writes a book. Writing characters that are based on different parts of herself allowed Alison to develop a beautiful feedback loop between herself and readers. It allowed her to continue to be more vulnerable in her writing. Alison shares that there is a lot of writing that happens that isn’t writing. It’s about getting to know your characters and really understand them. Alison is a big fan of former Was It Chance guest, Venessa Kelley who has done art for Alison’s work. Advice to up and coming writers: write the story you want to write - there are readers out there! Trust yourself. Winning the Lambda Literary award for best LGBTQ Romance in 2023 was an amazing moment in Alison’s life. She is currently finding opportunities to teach writing and stretch her writing skills in new genres. Leaving her teaching career to be a full time writer was the greatest risk of Alison’s life. Discover how James's Artist Mindset transforms his subjects  into empowered, expansive artists, and learn why his work is more than just photography—it's a journey of self-discovery and expansion.   James Jin is a Brooklyn-based artist, singer, educator, and photographer on a mission to transform the experience of being photographed and “seeing” ones self. Through his Artist Mindset photo session, James helps clients tap into their more expansive selves, capturing stunning moments that transcend far beyond the shutter click. His work, showcased on Instagram and his website, reflects a unique blend of photo shoot, therapy, and guided meditation. Alan and James's chance encounter at a "Pretty, Witty and Gay Cabaret" (hosted by past WIC guests Jasmine and Cassidy) event sparked a conversation about the transformative power of photography as live, in-action coaching. James creates a safe, empowering space for vulnerability to shine, helping his subjects become more expansive artists. Dancers of New York was the “chance” encounter that really changed things for James. The idea of this was inspired by Humans of New York. His approach is “I will create opportunities for you to challenge yourself, go out of your comfort zone, and face your fears—because when you get better at doing those things consistently, you get closer to where you want to be.” Business school was how James learned NOT to do things. Ditching the “business as usual” approach. James credits Seth Godin for helping him think outside of the box with his work. The next phase of business is to work with artists for repeat sessions to build their confidence and support them as they grow and expand professionally  The moments filled with regret are also the moments where you learn the most and it’s a gift to embrace them. Owning your story is so incredibly powerful Lara spent so much time trying to prove she was worthy and good enough but always afraid her past would take everything away Forgiveness is easy for Lara - with everyone except herself. When she wrote the chapter on “self-forgiveness” for Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s book she had to face this head-on and it changed the game “Reading was my first addiction” - reading was an escape and a way to protect herself If you want to be a writer you have to read and read and read With a natural aptitude for writing Lara got a lot of attention and approval at school and she craved more of that Writing is a way for Lara to feel good There’s a very special gift to be able to write in the voice of others Collaborative writing and ghostwriting are, basically, the same thing Two years out of jail and on probation, Lara was struggling to get a job. When she saw a Craigslist post for a part-time literary agent assistant When someone believes in you, you rise above and beyond their expectations - we all need to be believed in Lara worked her way up to CEO from Idea Arcitechs and then left to start her own agency, True Literary. True Literary’s mission is to help create books and content that entertains, transforms, provokes, and inspires (not necessarily in that order). Starting her own agency was about the freedom to choose who she worked with and what books/authors she took on and also being able to decide how she wants to spend her time and be fully free “There is no room for creativity when you’re in survival mode” The Gemma Project is about gender and trauma-responsive care for incarcerated women Stay tuned because Lara’s memoir is being optioned for a made-for-TV film It takes a lot to shake Lara, she doesn’t fear failure because she doesn’t personalize it. It’s all just feedback Hope can be squishy but Lara’s philosophy is “I look forward to looking back on this someday” and she loves it when people underestimate her. Learn more about your ad choices.
