The Toronto Timepiece Show is going BIG — and Jason Hutton is back to tell us what’s in store for this year’s show. With 90+ exhibitors expected in Toronto, Jason gives us a look at how much the show has grown, the new Artisanal Lounge, some of the incredible brands and independent watchmakers attending, and even a tease about a new Grönefeld release that will be shown publicly at the show.We also talk about the success of the first Montreal Timepiece Show, the growth of the Canadian watch community, what it actually takes behind the scenes to put these shows together, and Jason’s vision for Timepiece World Journal. But before Jason joins us… Smartwatch Dick is BACK.Rich has been keeping notes while he’s been away, which means Alex and Jordan have some explaining to do. And this time he’s not stopping with us — Jonny from Walker & Crown managed to get himself on Rich’s radar after making the mistake of talking about smartwatches on our last episode. 😂We’ll be at the Toronto Timepiece Show September 26 & 27 and can’t wait to meet more of you in person.Toronto Timepiece Show: https://www.timepieceshow.com/Timepiece World: https://www.timepieceworld.com/Walker & Crown: https://walkerandcrown.com/ Shipwrecked Watch Company: https://www.shipwreckedwatchcompany.com/🎙️ Watch You Talkin’ About?Alex, Jordan & Smartwatch Dick
This week we're joined by Jonny from Walker & Crown, one of the newest British microbrands on the scene — and one that definitely isn't interested in playing it safe.Walker & Crown's story started with a lost watch belonging to Jonny's grandfather and eventually turned into something much bigger: Jonny and his wife Colette putting their own money behind a watch brand they genuinely believe in.We get into where the brand came from, why they chose to self-fund instead of going the Kickstarter route, the risks of launching a new microbrand, and the thinking behind their first collection, the Revival Series. And these aren't just four different dial colours.Laser Drift. The Clerk. Memphis Beat. Electric Lagoon. Each has its own personality and its own connection to the music, design and culture of the 1980s. Even the packaging gets in on it — including an actual cassette with an NFC-linked playlist created around each watch.Jordan has been wearing two of the watches, so we also get into what they're actually like on wrist, the 37x37mm square case, the finishing, bracelets, Miyota movements and some of the little details that surprised us.£379. Self-funded. Small production runs. No waiting a year for a Kickstarter watch to hopefully show up.This was a fun one. Jonny fit right in, we went completely off the rails a few times, and by the end of it you'll probably understand why we're pretty damn excited to see where Walker & Crown goes from here.⌚ WALKER & CROWNWebsite: walkerandcrown.comInstagram: @walkerandcrownFacebook: Search “Walker & Crown”You can register your interest directly through the Walker & Crown website for launch updates and early access to the Revival Series. As always, let us know what you think in the comments. For the first time, we’re recording together in person! After 18 holes of golf, dinner and a couple of drinks, we sat down on the deck and did what we do best — talked watches. The big one this week is the Makoto Boken. Ryan from Makoto gave us a pretty bold challenge: put his Grade 5 titanium adventure watch up against our Christopher Ward C63 Sealander Extreme GMTs and tell him what we really think.Challenge accepted. After both spending some serious wrist time with the Boken, we talk about the incredible wearability, ridiculous lume, finishing, straps, what we’d change, and whether a watch at roughly half the price can actually hang with the Christopher Ward.We also get into new watches, getting the next generation hooked on watches, wrestling, the upcoming Toronto Timepiece Show and, as always, plenty of completely unnecessary detours.🏈 LAST CALL FOR OUR FREE NFL PICK ’EM POOL!We’ve got a Shipwrecked Watches Lost at Sea Ocean Blue up for grabs for the winner. Want in? Reach out to us or check our socials for details.⌚ Makoto Watch CompanyWebsite: https://makotowatch.comInstagram: @makotowatchcompanySo what do you think: Makoto Boken or Christopher Ward C63 Extreme GMT?Thanks for listening, Watchers. Now wind it up!
This week we’re playing a dangerous game: Buy It, Consider It, Kill It.Rolex, Omega or Tudor? Breitling, TAG Heuer or Zenith? G-Shock, Timex or Swatch? And what happens when we start throwing the Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster and Tudor Black Bay into the mix? Some watches are getting bought, some are getting considered…and some are disappearing forever. We also get into Jordan selling another watch — this time to someone buying their first mechanical watch — and why seeing someone discover this hobby for the first time can bring back some of that excitement we sometimes lose as collectors.Plus, are luxury watch brands falling behind when it comes to advertising? We talk YouTube, social media, traditional advertising, clickbait and whether brands like Rolex, Vacheron Constantin and AP really need to change the way they reach watch buyers. And now it’s your turn.BUY IT. CONSIDER IT. This week on Watch You Talkin' About, Alex and Jordan dive into the wild collision of pro wrestling and high-end horology. They break down the massive controversy surrounding WWE superstar Roman Reigns flexing a $500,000 skeletonized Audemars Piguet Tourbillon on live TV, and discuss the internet backlash over "watch snobbery". Plus, Jordan shares his full recap and highlight reel from his very first RedBar YYC meetup, showcasing incredible grail pieces like a 1970s Patek Philippe Calatrava, an Omega Flightmaster, and a Tudor Submariner. Later, the guys share details on how to join the official Watch You Talkin' About NFL Pick’em Pool—sponsored by Shipwreck Watch Company—where the winner takes home a brand-new "Lost at Sea" diver! To wrap it up, Alex and Jordan unleash a round of hot takes on awful OEM watch bracelets, why the hatred for "hype watches" is total nonsense, and why social media creators need to wrap up their 20-second wrist rolls.
