We've been thinking and are both in agreement - email is where it's at ... at ... ? ... no? Oh fine! We're still gonna take this episode to explore the wonder that it Electronic Mail though.  From its humble origins displacing flag waving hot air balloonists, to the pervasion of spam, we're doing it all. You'll be subjected to SMTP, POP, IMAP, BLT, R.E.S.P.E.C.T. the works! So grab yourself a cold one, kick back and relax and leave it to us to CC you through. The French Connection

The French Connection

2020-07-1856:11

"Popeye is here!"  Everyone relax, we're back with the '71 gritty, suspense-filled cop drama The French Connection. We're walking the mean streets of a pretty grim new York city as we try to work out just what the hell is going on in William Friedkin's classic.  With one-star reviews, no small amount of gushing and the answer to that perennial question - is it still a car chase if you're chasing a train - we hope you'll enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it. And if not? No biggy, there's another episode in 2 weeks. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message
Part 3, The Stumble Home! We did it gang! Half the movies! Listen in as Rob and Mike talk through The Undiscovered Country at great length, then realise they have a whole other film! They're 5 hours in to recording, will they make it!?!!?!? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message
Ok, so this one is also an hour and a half long. On the plus side, by the time you get to 45 mins in you'll be halfway through our Star Trek Mega Marathon! In this episode, we talk about Nimoy's ability to direct and make money, Shatner's inability to direct ... and to make money, transparent aluminium, iPads in space, and do our best to work through the worst and second-worst of the whole series and the one where they travel back in time! Just remember, however bad your day may be going, you're not the one who had to remove Shatner's gusset after a hard day's filming / directing. Intro music: The Search For Spock (Theme From "Star Trek III"), James Horner © 1984 Paramount Pictures Corporation ℗ 1984 Capitol Records, Inc. Outro music: End Credits, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Jerry Goldsmith ℗ CBS Records Inc. © Paramount Pictures Corporation --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message
We've talked about it, threatened it, argued over it and we've finally done it - a Star Trek episode. But rather than picking our favourite (Wrath of Khan obv.) we decided to run a bumper edition of 3 weekly episodes covering all 6 original cast movies and Generations to round it off! We've got 1 Star Reviews and tech from the Trek universe that made it into our world all mixed up with a bunch of Shatner-esque pauses, Nimoy eyebrow raises and more. Intro music: Main Title (Album Version) Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Gerry Goldsmith © 1979, 1999 Paramount Pictures Corporation, © 1974, 1976, 1999 Sony Music Entertainment Inc. Superman

Superman

2020-05-0201:25:42

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Mike and Rob and a bumper episode full of super goodness. While this one can't claim to be faster than a speeding anything (it's long) at least it sounds better than the last two!  Learn everything there is to know about the making of the O.G. Superman (none of that reboot BS here, oh no!) including the stuff the had to invent to make the movie work, the amazing alternate casting that never was, and the wonder of Marlon Brando going "full Brando" and suggesting he could be re-cast as a bagel (we're not joking).  And sure it's a bit long but we figure you've all got more time on your hands until we're allowed outside so sit back, relax, and enjoy. RISC

RISC

2020-04-1801:09:56

Still in lockdown and still with poor audio quality (sorry about that, we'll do better next time), we're back and exploring the exciting world of RISC architecture. Do you know how a CPU works? Mike doesn't. Rob, might, you have to give it a listen and find out.  With an utterly amazing fact, a load of IBM (and Apple, and others) and some metaphors so tenuous even we can't believe we got away with them,  what are you waiting for? Let's get ... processing! Intro Music: Computer Love (2009 Remaster), Kraftwerk ℗ 2009 Ralf Hütter/Kraftwerk Outro Music: The Power, Snap! ℗© 1990 BMG Rights Management GmbH --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message
Recording from lockdown! Not even Coronavirus is gonna stop us from bringing you your fortnightly fix of WDAWKT! Of course, we had to record it remotely, but it's all here, a perfect run-through of a classic western. This month we're heading to the wild west ... of Spain ... to ride across the desert that is Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Intro Music: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (Main Title), Ennio Morricone ℗© 2004 Capitol Records, LLC Outro Music: The Ecstacy of Gold, Ennio Morricone ℗© 2004 Capitol Records, LLC --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message

Self Driving Cars

2020-03-2101:14:35

As the Beatles famously didn't say, "Baby, mine can drive itself!" This month we talk about autonomous driving vehicle things! From cars to drones, to combine harvesters in Interstellar we discuss it all and more! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message
Big Trouble In Little China

Big Trouble In Little China

2020-03-0801:06:27

We considered whether this movie would be too self-indulgent - but what's the point of having a podcast if you can't indulge every so often? We're heading back into the lurid world of  John Carpenter with this month's movie, martial arts, mysticism and a healthy dose of humility as we head into the depths of San Francisco China Town. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message

Frozen

2020-01-0701:07:42

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! We're getting started with a bang and addressing one of Mike's blank spots as we take a wander through the winter wonderland that is, Frozen (turns out Mike really doesn't like Disney musicals). Grab a reindeer and ride along as we discover just how much Mike doesn't like Disney musicals,   how much Rob doesn't know about Disney Princes (which he's totally happy with) and all your usual favorite elements. Father Christmas

Father Christmas

2019-12-2401:02:29

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, except Mike & Rob who, wine bottle in hand, come crashing down the chimney and leave sooty footprints all over the place in their search for the origins of Father Christmas. From the origins of St Nick, through the dark ages of Slavic and Nordic tradition, one thing's for damn sure... you'll never look at Santa the same way again! Not suitable for children, or adults of a nervous disposition.  Intro Music: Carol of the Bells, John Williams ©℗ 1990 Twentieth Century Fox, under exclusive license to Sony Music Entertainment Outro Music: Back Door Santa, B. Beginning a long career of cashing in on his own franchise, George Lucas alleges he had nothing to do with this 1978, made for TV, musical bonanza. We call BS as this is clearly the work of some kind of twisted genius with a penchant for variety TV. Featuring songs by Diahann Carroll, Jefferson Starship, Bea Arthur, and event Carrie Fisher which just goes to show you really can buy anybody, it's so utterly terrible that it took us two attempts to record it! So gather round and let's enjoy the age-old tale of Wookies, life day and the importance of family... who will likely thank you to not ever show them this Intro Music: Light the Sky on Fire, Jefferson Starship ℗© 1998 Jefferson Starship, Inc., under exclusive license to Rhino Entertainment Company, a Warner Music Group Company. Antitrust

Antitrust

2019-11-1601:11:06

It's more interesting than it sounds ... honest! Mike & Rob look back at the history of antitrust action in the US and how it can apply to today's big tech companies... see told you it was interesting! Of course, we do so with quite a bit of childish innuendo, a range of slightly adult themes and be sure to stay tuned for the very special "bloopers" 🧀 Intro Music: Competition, Brother Culture ℗© Evidence Music Outro Music: Babybel Advert (1992), Various © Babybel --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message
The Hateful Eight

The Hateful Eight

2019-11-0353:48

It finally happened - we did a Tarrantino movie. Specifically, The Hateful Eight from 2015.  Mercifully, MIke manages to avoid going full film nerd and, instead, explores the nuance of one of the world's greatest directors in traditional puerile fashion. Rob gets confused by the movie and, it's very loud throughout. Enjoy! Intro Music: L'Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock, Ennio Morricone  ℗© 2015 Cine-Manic Productions Limited, under exclusive licence to Decca, a division of Unversal Music Operations Ltd Outro Music: Prejudice, Tim Minchin ℗© Laughing Stock Productions --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message

The Life of Jim Henson

2019-10-2201:07:33

Sorry We're (Drunk) and Late! It'll be worth the wait as this month we delve into the the genius of Jim Henson! Rob takes Mike through the life of the master puppeteer, writer and Director; Mike totally gets more than 50% on a quiz about Muppets, and things get downright emotional talking about childhood! Oh, and bad accents and dick jokes. Enjoy!
