Description
Podcast will be disclosing secrets of my past, and other guest’s secrets. We are airing our dirty laundry not because we want to. Who wants to do that? We are releasing them so that we can heal. It’s not easy to release some secrets because some have caused us great trauma. Hopefully, sharing my experiences and having guests share their experiences, you too can let go of your secrets and learn how to heal. My podcast is a result of my book, We Are NOT Our Secrets. Expected publication January 23, 2023.

***Warning*** Listening discretion is advised. Rape, cult, and animal cruelty references when Merle recants his ACE’s (adverse childhood experiences).
Merle Yost, renowned California psychotherapist, teacher, and private practice therapist for over 30 years, specializes in trauma, particularly for men sexually abused as children. He is an Approved Consultant in EMDR, a San Francisco Gestalt Institute graduate, has a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology: Transpersonal Specialization, and a B.A. in Management. As if this wasn’t impressive enough, he is the author of six books. The latest is Facing the Truth of Your Life, https://a.co/d/iqBILbV.
Merle is also promoting his new workshop series, Seven Steps to Powerful Boundaries. https://unspokenboundaries.com/
I am honored to have an episode where we get to hear a male’s voice detailing their ACE’s. I have found many of my male friends have experienced ACEs but find it difficult to speak about them publicly. Merle will help many find their voice.
Today’s show is twofold: we get Merle’s therapeutic wisdom, along with his disclosed ACEs.
During the interview, I learned so much! I hope you appreciate this free therapy session that gives us a wealth of knowledge, explanations, and understanding of cults and ACEs. I cannot begin to tell you all of the topics covered in this hour episode. You must listen to catch all these precious nuggets. Please, sit down and unpack with WANOS, how all traumas can be released from the body, even PTSD.
Men, et al, will appreciate how Merle validates many of abuses happening - commonly seen as isolated toward girls - to being just as prevalent with boys. Merle says the schools are currently full of teachers taking advantage of students. He has many of them as his clients. Merle stated, ‘Inappropriate sexual encounters are taunted as supposedly enjoyable experiences for boys. This makes ACEs even more under reported among them. However, this leaves many carrying shame.’
The episode is packed full of topics and nuggets of unmitigated wisdom. Merle unabashedly speaks on: cults, boundaries, ACE’s, forgiveness, isolation, school system assaults, religious authorities insults, eroticized shame related to ACEs (BDSM), and he discusses how a proven technique, Somatic Therapy, can rid the body of trauma and allow us to live our best lives. Listen how Somatic Therapy can also take away PTSD. Merle Yost is a master of his craft.

Colleen’s follow up interview updates us on the meetup of her biological dad and newly found family members after not knowing them for over 50 years. What a story!
Beautiful endings can come from some ACEs. This is one of them! Your hearts will be full for Colleen because we know some NPE (non parental event) journeys will never come close to this spectacular experience. Join WANOS as Colleen finishes her story.
If you are a product of NPE, a great Facebook group referral from Colleen is:

Dr. Monroe’s memoir regarding grief is entitled: Mom’s Search For Meaning by Melissa M. Monroe. Her openly discussing grief and stating that we should all talk about grief is why I started conversations surrounding grief. Prior to her words, I never knew how. I still do not fully understand this, but I repeat her story and share her book. Also, T.D. Jakes helps us when stating, all of us are God’s gifts and we are temporarily here. Prayers and/or love and light to all who have lost loved ones.

Dr. Bob, as we call him, discusses his recent best-selling book on healing and releasing trauma, Stop Doing Sh*t You Don’t Want To Do. He also shares his life experiences and how to successfully overcome addiction. We Are Not Our Secrets welcomes this Psychologist, mentor, actor, and father to the podcast. Dr. Bob says, ‘“Too much (emotional) safety is dangerous.” We should show our true emotions and be our authentic selves. Every emotion has value. Experiencing them can help prevent us from not having these pressurized explosions waiting to happen.’ Dr. Bob also drops some controversial nuggets, ‘The psychiatry world may be doing more harm than good.’ Why? ‘Addicts created the 12 step program to overcome addiction because psychiatry methods offered no solutions. “If someone does the 12 step program, in its entirety, it is 100% effective!” The masters and doctoral programs produces more thinkers — not healers.’

Verlisha elaborates on the magnificent points that were made in Part I. I had so much fun with her I was thrown off guard and we talked like old friends in the prior episode. Her openness and transparency was uniquely refreshing! Today we dive into many of the points she spoke of in Part I. Their emotions are what many are dealing with when they mention triggers she says. Because emotional development is most often stunted at the time of childhood trauma. Some must learn to rewire themselves without knowing they have any issues, as the stress response system shut off emotions to protect. However, those childhood experiences still manage to creep into
many people’s lives as adults.

Kimberly’s journalistic experience shines through like a missile as she dishes out phrases of empowerment! I’m so grateful that with each episode of WANOS we learn more and more about how to “turn our pain into purpose” as Kimberly professes. Professional journalist and women’s advocate Kimberly Kay Scott, speaks about how her ACE’s affected her. Kim’s also a #1 best-selling Amazon author (Women and Children’s category), licensed counselor, acclaimed journalist, and successful life coach to the stars. She loves my input on what many of us don’t talk about: Prevention. She says my innovative stance on prevention is one reason why she supports WANOS podcast. Kimberly feels as I, we can’t stop all ACE’s, but stands with me when I profess we could prevent many ACE’s with open dialog.
Normally, Kim provides Integrative Counseling/Coaching, but today she shares her ACE’s and talks with WANOS host Jj.
Her voice interjects two additional elements to abuse:
1. Spouse or significant others who enable perpetrators; and
2. The words, “If anyone ever touches my girls. I will kill them.” She says these words have some children torn over reporting, especially, to their parents. She confesses it influenced why she didn’t report.
She commends my podcast by recognizing the need for all to tell their stories, thus, removing the stigmas surrounding ACE’s.
Elated to have her on my podcast is an understatement. Her extensive training, personal experiences, and expert journalism makes her a true asset in so many arenas, but especially to the mental health field. She says, “Should child abusers receive life sentences? We (survivors) are living out life sentences everyday?” She reiterates this because ACE’s adversely affected her relationships and marriages throughout her life. She makes so many great points but what stands out is, “Turn our pain into purpose or power and that we must baby step our way into survival.”
Kim is an asset to the world of psychology and she will be back for a Part II to discuss journaling, and the gift of anger. I can’t wait!

I welcome back Ellen S. Wright, MA, LMFT. In this episode, Ellen explains Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) that she uses for mental health. EMDR helps with and can teach persons how to not internalize ACE’s. Removing harmful internalized dialogs of, “I’m not good enough, it was my fault, etc. and replaces with new thoughts using bilateral body stimulations. She says, ‘EMDR is very effective with a variety of mental health issues. She highly recommends EMDR because it’s effectiveness is felt much sooner than in talk therapy. Sometimes, the benefits are felt the first session. It’s a remarkable therapeutic practice.’

Alicia Speaks - Part II
Alicia’s parents provided structure, academic support, and safety in their two parent household. How in the world did Alicia become a victim of sex trafficking? They were present in Alicia’s life and addressed her emotional needs and gave her unconditional love. How did this happen? Was it the dangers of society? What is abuse? How does it happen? This is why Alicia is on the show. We all need to see the signs and heed the warnings. Should we discuss this more within families? Does every household need to be made aware of the statistics on sex trafficking and missing youth. The youth affected includes not only children but young adults. More reports are coming out about 16-18+ being targeted online with very professional websites like those that attracted Alicia .
Alicia is brave in telling her story and showing us the traps that led up to her being manipulated then kidnapped and abused. Her story seems an anomaly but in 2021 a reported 337,195 filed missing reports involving youth that were entered into the FBI National Crime Information Center (NCIC). I think it’s time we discuss what abuse looks like and the statistics as we have done today. Have your teens and young adults listen to this episode and Alicia’s Part I. I hope this can help families today. Thank you for listening.

Alicia’s Part I eases us into her life. She speaks on things parents get right. However, Part II discloses how with even all the correct tools children and young adults can be caught up in actual sex trafficking because of the traffickers expert tactics. Part I Alicia discusses the benefits of being raised in a two parent family household. Alicia also shares her receiving open discussions and proper dialog about body autonomy pre-pubescent, and pubescent, sooner than most households because she and her mother entered puberty earlier than most girls. Alicia’s Part I wants to help parents/guardians talk about early puberty and adolescence years openly. She shares tips and books that help her.
As usual, my guests have secrets. In her Part II, she discloses hers. She gives us an awareness that no matter how structured your home life is, outside influences occur; solidifying, my views on the need to have candid conversations early in households regarding abuse. It is this open dialog with her parents that she credits for her survival after being trafficked. Alicia’s journey is a testimony to survival and human instincts. You do not want to miss Part II. To hear the secrets of guests the podcast often must lay the background of the guests. Part I is the background. Part II is her secret.

Colleen continues her journey with NPE. It’s the 60’s and there’s skeletons in the closets because DNA testing wasn’t around. The fallout is bearing its fruit in 2023 with a Facebook NPE group of over 9k members, creating broken families, or sometimes, enmeshing to form stronger family ties.
