Typical for the Mid-Atlantic in Spring, an onshore flow can turn what would otherwise be a sunny day into a gloomy scene. Meteorologist Jake Grant joins Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek this week to talk about the cloudy and cool setup that is shaping the current pattern across Delmarva. Even with the chilly weather, baseball opening day is just around the corner in Baltimore and Philadelphia as a coastal system threatens to put a damper on the first games of the season.
In this week's podcast, Meteorologist Erich Ahlf sits down with Matt DilLoreto, a meteorologist at WPTZ-TV Burlington, VT, to discuss the abnormally warm winter across the Northeast. Erich and Matt also take a look at the impact of geography and topography on local weather.
After a considerably wet start to March, Delmarva is getting the chance to dry out with a stretch of nice and sunny weather. Meteorologist Jake Grant and Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek talk about the change in pattern and how long we can expect the early Spring push to last. Rich and Jake also talk about the upcoming solar eclipse.
Although March came in like a lamb, that trend was merely a mirage. An accelerated storm track will bring 4 storm systems through the Mid- Atlantic over the course of 8 days. With a saturated ground, the prospect for flooding will increase as the active weather pattern represents signs of Spring rather than the remaining days of winter. Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Erich Ahlf discuss the recent wet weather trend and what may lie ahead going into mid-March.
A late month temperature surge caps off a spring-like pattern that will bring heavy rain and some gusty winds to Delmarva, all before a strong cold front returns the area to chilly readings. Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Jake Grant look at the setup for the active weather and look ahead to March for what's expected in the final weeks of winter.
Much of central and northern Delmarva received a quick shot of snow late Friday night, and if you weren't up early in the morning on Saturday you might not have seen any of it as it melted away after sunrise. Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Erich Ahlf discuss how trends may be leaning back towards milder weather as we close out the month of February. They also talk about the prospects of additional snow chances into the final weeks of winter.
A quick coastal storm brought a brush of snow to parts of Delmarva, but as Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Jake Grant talk about, a few factors kept the accumulating snow further north. Looking ahead to the rest of the month, Jake and Rich explore the variables that will shed light on the prospect of another cold snap and the chance for any more snow.
While the Mid-Atlantic region has been experiencing a consistent pattern of quiet weather, monsoon-like rains, flooding and hurricane force winds have been battering areas in the western US. Meteorologist Erich Ahlf and Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek talk about the setup for these contrasting weather scenarios and how a pattern shift may mean a return to active weather on Delmarva soon. For daylight lovers, Solar Spring started on the 5th, marking the beginning of a period of gaining more than 2 minutes of daylight daily.
2 years ago, Delmarva was digging out from one of the biggest snow events to hit the area in several years. Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Erich Ahlf talk about the setup that brought blizzard conditions and upwards of a foot of snow to areas along the coast. Back to this winter and closing out the month of January, record heat helped to quickly melt the snow and ice from previous storms. Rich and Erich also look ahead to early signals of what's to come in February.
Coming off of Delmarva's second round of snow last Friday, many areas started the week with leftover snow and ice, even in areas in the south due to bitter cold temperatures from the weekend. Meteorologist Jake Grant and Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek discuss the recent snow totals. They also talk about how the pattern change will quickly melt away what's left from the event as near 70 degree temps and several chances for rain move into the region.
When a winter forecast includes the threat for high winds and heavy rain it's usually the work of a coastal storm, like the typical nor'easters that wreak havoc along the coast this time of the year. But this latest storm was a far different event, one that unfolded to bring more of a tropical storm-like environment to Delmarva. In the hours leading up to the storm system's arrival, Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Jake Grant discuss the forecast details behind the evolution of this atypical storm. Also, special guest Evan Adams from Dorchester county joins the podcast to talk about how coastal flooding plagues many parts of the bayside of Delmarva when strong storm systems move through.
The start of the new year has been deceivingly quiet as an active storm track is expected to impact Delmarva in the coming days. Talks of snow in the Mid-Atlantic region are focused on a coastal storm that will arrive this coming weekend. Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Jake Grant discuss the chances for a measurable snow on the eastern shore and if this quick shift into active weather will shed light on what to expect as we head deeper into winter.
A strong nor'easter brought substantial flooding to parts of Delmarva this past weekend and the effects continue to linger in many spots. Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Jake Grant recap the event, talking about how high winds across the coast and torrential rains combined for a 1-2 punch of flooding that left many areas inundated. Rich and Jake also look ahead to the next weather maker and discuss any impacts to the Christmas forecast.
Soaking rains this past weekend will surely put a dent into lingering drought issues across Delmarva, as Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Jake Grant review the final rain tallies from the big storm system. Many areas also received a burst of snow that didn't add up to much, but it was enough to equal all of last year's snow totals in the Salisbury area! With an active storm track in place, Jake and Rich look ahead to another potential storm system for the weekend.
Many communities across Delmarva have been celebrating the holiday season with parades - and for the most part, the weather has been great! Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Erich Ahlf share their experiences with this year's parades and take a look at more chances for snowflakes, all before looking ahead to a big storm system that is expected to impact the area by the end of the weekend.
Many spots on Delmarva had a nice surprise Tuesday morning (if you like snow, of course)! Flurries accompanied a big push of arctic air that brought the coldest day since mid March. Meteorologist Erich Ahlf and Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek talk about what this might mean for the month of December and continue to analyze the factors that will shape the upcoming winter in mid-Atlantic.
The big, soaking rain that Delmarva needed finally arrived! Listeners will hear thoughts from Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Jake Grant about the setup leading up to the storm system's arrival. They'll also take a look at the Thanksgiving Day outlook.
The end of daylight saving time brought the inevitable return of super early sunsets. Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Jake Grant talk about the pros and cons of the time change. They also discuss the increasingly dry conditions across Delmarva as November continues the trend of below average rainfall dating back to October.
This week, Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Erich Ahlf discuss what could be described as one of the more dramatic temperature swings in recent memory. From record breaking heat to unseasonably cold air, November will start off with many areas potentially experiencing the first freeze of the season.  And with the cold snap comes the first snow of the season in the state of Maryland!
This week, Meteorologist Jake Grant and Meteorologist Erich Ahlf will discuss the frost and cold condition seen on Tuesday morning, where some inland and rural locations in the Peninsula dropped to below freezing! They'll also discuss what conditions are ripe for frost development. The talk will then switch to the late summer-like warmth that's expected to arrive for this weekend, and they'll explain why big temperature swings like this are not too uncommon for this time of year. They will also touch on how this weeks weather could impacts fall colors here on Delmarva.
