In this episode, I interview Misha Komarov, founder of =nil; Foundation. I speak with Misha about how he entered the crypto space by designing databases and blockchain protocols. He discusses the origins of =nil; Foundation, which sought to merge achievements from traditional database architectures into blockchain to enable highly scalable infrastructure. We explore some of the technologies =nil; has built, like zero-knowledge applications, a circuit compiler, and a proof generation marketplace. Misha explains their proposal for zero-knowledge sharding as a method to scale Ethereum while retaining composability. He shares his contrarian perspective that Layer 2 rollups may fragment, rather than effectively scale, Ethereum's liquidity. Misha argues that for crypto projects to be taken seriously by large non-crypto companies, they first need to grow substantially in usage and size. He sees finding product-market fit and real-world use cases as the core challenge confronting the crypto industry currently. Welcome back to another episode of the Web3 with Sam Kamani podcast. This is episode 117, where we had the fascinating opportunity to speak with McDavid Stoddard from Aperture Finance. Here's a recap of our insightful conversation: McDavid shared his unique journey into the world of Web3 and cryptocurrency. He recounted his early exposure to crypto during his college days, which coincidentally involved a connection to the first-ever government seizure of cryptocurrency in Charleston, South Carolina. This experience sparked his interest in the field, ultimately leading him to the dynamic world of DeFi and his current role at Aperture Finance. Aperture Finance, under McDavid's guidance, has evolved through various stages, adapting to the changing landscape of DeFi. The core mission of Aperture is to enhance user experience in DeFi by minimizing the complexity of executing strategies, providing better pricing, execution, and automation. Their first successful product was a highly popular vault on Terra Classic, which was unique for its audited smart contract and achieved over $100 million in TVL within weeks of launch. However, the journey hasn't been without its challenges. The crash of Terra led Aperture on a path of reinvention, focusing more on their technical solutions rather than structured products. This pivot brought them to their current project with Uniswap, where they offer an intuitive interface for LP management, allowing for single-transaction rebalances and automated features based on user-set triggers. These innovations significantly simplify the process for users, especially in dealing with the complexities introduced by concentrated liquidity in Uniswap V3. McDavid also discussed the future roadmap for Aperture, highlighting their intent to build a more generalized intent-based architecture. This approach would allow users to declare their end goals in natural language, which Aperture's system would then translate into actionable steps. This user-centric design could potentially revolutionize how users interact with DeFi platforms, making them more accessible to a broader audience. Regarding the broader DeFi ecosystem, McDavid expressed concern over the current trend of airdrop farming and points farming dominating user activities. He hopes this is just a transitional phase leading to more substantial use cases for DeFi. Finally, McDavid shared Aperture's immediate plans, including their upcoming Token Generation Event (TGE) and ongoing efforts to hire backend engineers and advisors for tactical marketing and TGE-related activities. They are also engaging with accredited investors for a private sale. It was an enlightening conversation, shedding light on the ever-evolving landscape of DeFi and the innovative solutions Aperture Finance is bringing to the table. Thanks to McDavid Stoddard for joining us and sharing his valuable insights on Aperture Finance and the future of DeFi. Thank you, listeners, for tuning into this episode.
