Good but not good enough is the verdict from All Whites coach Darren Bazeley, after their one-nil friendly loss to Poland. Jubilation for Otago first-five Cam Millar after nailing the game-winning penalty kick that's sent his province to the NPC semifinals.  The 23-year-old slotted a 51-metre penalty kick to help the home side edge Waikato 44-41 in their quarterfinal in Dunedin.  He told Piney that getting it over was pure euphoria.  “I’m not even really sure what I was doing after I got it over, but, yeah, obviously pretty stoked.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
25 years ago, Kiwi sporting icon Mark Inglis made history, winning New Zealand’s first ever Paralympic Cycling medal at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games.  But this isn’t the extent of his achievements – Inglis having survived 13 days trapped on Mount Cook and becoming the first person to summit Mount Everest as a double amputee.  He told Piney that losing your legs is hard, but if you’re going to have them cut off at 23, the best person to do it to is a young mountaineer.  “You live in an environment where if you make the right move, you might die, and so you have that ability to focus, and that’s what, you know, you’re able to bring along to this new situation.”  “And so it wasn’t about, oh, I’ll never climb again, it’s just like, when can I climb again?”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A pragmatic approach has helped earn the White Ferns their first victory at the Cricket World Cup.  New Zealand have beaten Bangladesh by 100 runs at Guwahati.  Captain Sophie Devine was happy with the 227 for 9 they posted batting first, where she made 63 and Brooke Halliday hit 69.  Halliday told Piney it felt like their performance was a lot fuller in this game than it was in the previous two.  “It was, yeah, very satisfying, and I think there’s a lot of happy people in our group at the moment.”   LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Joseph Parker admits he's wary of the latest heavyweight standing in the way of another shot at a world boxing belt.  The Kiwi faces big-hitting Brit Fabio Wardley in London in just over a fortnight, with a hopeful title fight against undisputed Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Usyk sometime early next year.  Parker says he's watched Wardley's last few fights, and he always finds a way to step it up and get the results, with 18 K-Os in his 19 wins.  But he told Piney that he feels like for this fight, Wardley’s stepped up a little too far.  “I do feel like with the experience that I have, I know he possesses power, but like I say to all the other fighters that I’ve fought, like, bring it on.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Petrolheads are flocking to Bathurst for the biggest weekend in Australasian motorsport.  The Bathurst 1000 kicks off this weekend over the ditch in Australia.  Few people know the race better than 4-time winner Greg Murphy, who claimed the victory in 1996, 1999, 2003, and 2004.  The race is reliant on luck, a million tiny factors the difference between winning and losing, Murphy telling Piney there’s so many things that can go wrong.  “You've got to try and dot a lot of I's and cross a lot of T's, and when one of those things isn't quite right, you're not going to win the race.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mt Maunganui rain has scuppered the Black Caps chances of reclaiming cricket's Chappell-Hadlee Trophy.  Last night's second T20 against Australia was eventually reduced to a nine-over match, but just 2.1 overs were possible before the wet weather returned and the contest had to be abandoned.  The Bay Oval is again host for tonight's third and final match of the series.  Black Caps coach Rob Walter told Jason Pine that while it’s disappointing they don’t have a shot at winning back the trophy, there’s a lot to learn from the outing.   “We’ll sort of focus this evening on trying to level up the scores.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Two Warriors have been awarded a high honour in the NRL world.   Erin Clark and Payton Takimoana have made it onto the 2025 Dally M Team of the Year – Clark as the lock for the men’s team and Takimoana as a winger for the women’s.  A consistent player in the season, Clark featured in all 25 of the Warriors’ games, starting in all but one.   He joined Piney to unpack the season and discuss what it’s like to win a Dally M award.  “To be at a function among some of the best players in the game was pretty special,” he said.  “And then to hear my name ... I was like, damn, that was pretty surprising, but yeah, I was pretty proud, and I’m happy.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
