In 1968 (That's more than 50 years ago) Wendy Carlos released her debut album Switched-On-Bach, a collection of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach performed on a Moog synthesizer. The album became an unexpected commercial success, which helped change people's perceptions of the synthesizer from a noisy machine to a musical instrument.
Switched-On-Bach received a poor reception from classical music purists, but it became very popular among young people interested in electronic sounds, for whom the words "switched on" evoked the druggy/erotic idea of "turned on". The album was so popular that it became the second classical album to be certified platinum and triggered a paradigm shift, in which electronic instruments were started seen as something more than just "beeps and bloops"
In the years that followed, musicians and record labels all over the world copied the idea and produced a large number of "switched-on" type albums, including not only Moog renditions of classical music but also pop, rock, folk, country, and other styles. This mix is a selection of some of these Moog "trippy" covers. Let's get switched-on !

The 4th episode of this season is a collection of contemporary rap songs using high-pitched vocal techniques. A variety of high-pitched rapping styles have taken over streaming platforms in recent years, and there is one rapper to blame: Young Thug, His high dynamic boundary-pushing (and full of voice-cracks) style of singing, could be considered the origin of the current high-pitch rapping trend. This trend includes different "styles" of singing: falsetto, voice cracks, vocal chord abuse, squeaky rap (or mosquito rap), pitched-up vocals, nasal high-pitch singing, and the famous "baby voice", among others. A lot of articles have been written recently about "the baby voice", the singing style popularised by Playboi Carti, which is basically singing with the higher pitch voice "of a baby". This style made it to the headlines of the main music outlets. While some rappers adopted the baby voice in their delivery after Playboi Carti made it popular, many others have been using various high-pitched rapping styles before, during, and after Carti's famous style went viral. This radio episode brings together a huge variety of high-pitch contemporary rap, focusing not only on "the baby voice" but on all types of high-pitched vocals, from the underground to the mainstream, passing thru meme parody songs, where, for example, we can hear mickey mouse dissing goofy over some sick beats. I hope you like it.

This chapter of Weird Flex features the electronic duo EVOL. Since the late 90s, Stephen Sharp and Roc Jiménez de Cisneros deform all sorts of techno artefacts, stretching them to their very breaking point, creating minimalistic yet overwhelming algorithmic madness. For this episode, they made a self-referential house music mix: with tracks that talk about being house tracks, about the genre, about the producers, about their own sounds and conventions, about their titles, about the fact that they are songs, etc. I hope you like it

This chapter of Weird Flex is a collection of songs sung by text-to-speech systems. In the 1960s, the IBM 704, a huge computer that weighed almost 9,000 kilograms, sang a song for the first time. Since then, many artists have used speech synthesis tools to voice their songs. From creative adaptations and tweaks of text-to-speech tools such as Google Translate, Loquendo, Microsoft Sam, or Macintalk, to software and plugins specifically designed to sing, such as Chipspeech or Vocaloid and its universally famous Hatsune Miku voice bank.I hope you like it.

Liminal Spaces are spaces that are transitional in nature, like hallways, waiting rooms, parking lots, and so on. This concept has spread like a virus for the last 2 years on Reddit and other websites, where internet communities post images of empty functional spaces. These images became popular because they contradict our expectations. The empty, lifeless images of functional spaces create an unsettling feeling of dissonance with the hustle and bustle of our lived experiences in these places. In YouTube compilations, these images are often put together layered with "dreamy" or "weird" music that seemingly "match" the aesthetics and add to the discomfort. This episode reclaims Muzak, Elevator Music, Airplane boarding music, software installing music, and telephone hold music among others, as Liminal Music: the conceptual sonic counterpart for the Liminal Spaces trend.Liminal Music is functional music that exists solely to be played as a background signal, an acoustic wallpaper composed to be heard but not listened to. You as a passive listener don't decide to listen to it, it's just there. This music is supposed to be designed to have psychological effects on the people who hear it. It soothes and relaxes the listener, fills a silence, modifies behaviours, encourages shoppers and increases workers' productivity, remembers you what you are doing and serves as company when you have to wait.Aesthetically, Liminal Music sounds watered down, without big shifts in dynamic levels. Among original tracks it’s also common to hear light versions of popular tracks flattened out, making them mellow and easy to listen to.We could compare Liminal Music with #mood and #chill playlists on Spotify, or the famous YouTube channel "chill beats to study or relax to", but the difference is that in these last ones the listener chooses to press play. These songs are actually really well made, and sometimes (in the case of muzak and elevator music) are composed by great composers who put a lot of effort into making this music so secondary and unexciting.Listening to some of these songs can bring back different memories to different people, as these songs have been used for different purposes by different companies or places. Ironically some of these tracks that we recognise and hate from calling support lines for hours, can cause some sense of nostalgia and familiarity. So to recap: this is a collection of Liminal Music, presented isolated from its original context. Here we won’t listen to the reverb, noises, chatter, speaker announcements, the sounds of people passing by, bad signal noises, or analogue distortions that normally accompany the songs in their original context. These songs are reduced to the original empty music, as in the Liminal Spaces trend.I hope you like it, and thank you for holding the line.TRACKLIST1 - Intro2 - Wayne Hill - Left Bank Two (Vision On Gallery Theme)3 - Tim Carleton - Opus No. 14 - Didier Malherbe & Loy Ehrlich - Hadouk5 - Chris Rae - Liquid Latin6 - Marco Iodice - Qatar Airways Onboard Music (Night Version)7 - Skype for Business - Hold Music8 - Seeburg Music Library - One Note Samba9 - Karl Jenkins - Mr. Lucky10 - Dick Walter - Playground of the Stars11 - Fresh Music Library - Let's Do Lunch (Saxophone Hold Music)12 - Clean Bandit - Rather Be - Instrumental13 - Muzak Orchestra - 3 Days of the Condor14 - James Last - Guantanamera15 - Stan LePard - 1996 Internet Starter Kit - Velkommen16 - Ryanair Boarding Music - Liam Aidan - Golden Skies17 - Glitch Game Music - Waiting Muzak 2.118 - Fresh Optimism - One to One full19 - Sam Cardon - Elevator Music 2332320 - Aisha Duo - Amanda21 - Frank Chacksfield - I'll Be There22 - Jean Marie Ecay & Philippe Bestion - Positive Dimension23 - The New Edition - Bette Davis Eyes
The 6th Episode of this season is a collection of brand new protest songs that reflect and fight against the actual state of things. Creative criticisms towards religions, silicon valley, toxic masculinity, boomers, and the symptoms of the late-stage capitalism hell we are living in right now.

This Episode of weird flex is a collection of songs that feature alternative languages, non sense, and meaningless lyrics. Here you have a selection of words combined in nonsensical phrases, fictional words, sentences or languages; and gibberish or improvised stream of mouth sounds. From scatting and onomatopeias, to videogame and movie new languages, passing thru "musical blackface" and quite racist songs mocking other cultures by making fun of how their languages sound. listen carefully, because you won't understand 99% of what you are about to hear.I hope you like it1 - Intro2 - Chimo Bayo - Asi Me Gusta A Mi3 - Star Wars - Lapti Nek4 - Scatman John - Scatman [Ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop]5 - The Chips - Rubber Biscuit6 - Butsekik - Yoyoy Villame7 - The Goons - Ying Tong Song8 - Lady Gaga - Scheiße9 - Adriano Celentano - Prisencolinensinainciusol10 - Sonic Animation - Theophilus Thistler11 - K.K.
