Sermon from our Reformation 500th Anniversary Celebration Sunday. Pastor Micah marks 500 years since Martin Luther’s distribution of his Ninety-Five Theses with a sermon on one of the most important Bible passages during the Reformation, Romans 3:19-28.
Sermon from our October 22, 2017 worship service. Pastor Micah preaches on Matthew 22::15-22 (”Render unto Caesar…”), exploring one ot the greatest teaching illustrations Jesus ever used.
Sermon from our October 15, 2017 worship service. Pastor Micah combines Children’s Time with the sermon for the final installment of the series on Philippians, covering Philippians 4:1-9 and having fun with several pairs of glasses. (Reader: Colleen Conrad)
*Please note that this very visual sermon has been heavily edited to be easier for listening–you will probably like the video version better. If you have the time to watch rather than listen, click here to watch on the Trinity Facebook page!
Sermon from our October 8, 2017 worship service. In the third week of his four-week series on Paul’s letter to the Philippians, Pastor Micah preaches on Chapter 3 of the letter. Borrowing a classic Broadway song and reflecting on the early days of his relationship with his wife, Pastor offers a way to begin unpacking what it means to “know Christ” as Paul writes about in Philippians.
Sermon from our October 1, 2017 worship service. Pastor Micah continues his Philippians series by focusing on Philippians 2:1-13 while sharing a powerful memory from his childhood.
Pastor is back to posting sermons after fixing a problem with his computer! This sermon is from our September 24, 2017 worship service. Pastor Micah begins a 4-week series on Paul’s letter to the Philippian church, preaching on the centrality of Christ in this letter and having a little fun with astronomy.
Pastor Micah brings another “Christian Jargon” sermon, this time deconstructing the topic of forgiveness through one of the New Testament’s most important texts on that subject (Matthew 18:21-35). Forgiveness often is not as cut and dried as this text makes it sound, but this text (and the end of Matthew’s Gospel) point us in the right direction!
Sermon from our September 10, 2017 (Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost) worship service. Pastor Micah preaches on Matthew 18:15-20, Jesus’ teaching on reconciliation between church members. Reconciliation often looks like a huge effort–maybe even humanly impossible; however, it is already happening because it is what God has always done and continues to do in the world today.
Sermon from our September 3, 2017 (Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost) worship service. Pastor Micah preaches on Matthew 16:21-30, the aftermath of Peter confessing that Jesus is the Messiah. Peter said the right words in his confession, but he didn’t yet understand what his words meant–we look into that using the famous question from Martin Luther’s Small Catechism: “What does this mean?”
Sermon from our August 27, 2017 (Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost) worship service. Pastor Micah preaches on Matthew 16:13-20, the great story of the Confession of Peter. In this story, Jesus gives the disciple Peter a lot of responsibility to lead the church, and it’s amazing how much Jesus trusts Peter with this!
Here is the podcast version of Pastor Micah’s new hymn for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. The first part is the story behind his words, followed by our singing at the August 20, 2017 worship service (a “dry run” for the song). Check out the Trinity Lutheran Church YouTube channel for a video of this song, complete with lyrics on the screen.
Sermon from our August 20, 2017 (Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost) worship service. Pastor Micah preaches on Matthew 15:21-28, the challenging story of Jesus’ rough interaction with a Canaanite woman. Kind of like the Windows 10 operating system, the Holy Spirit is persistent about updates - updating our human “operating systems” to improve our ability and desire to demonstrate hospitality and share God’s love with other people.
Sermon from our August 13, 2017 (Tenth Sunday after Pentecost) worship service. Pastor Micah preaches on Matthew 14:22-33, Matthew’s version of the story of Jesus walking on water. Peter also walks on water in this story, likely because he does not yet trust the “refrain” of the Gospel of Matthew - that Jesus is Emmanuel (God with us).
Sermon from our August 6, 2017 (Ninth Sunday after Pentecost) worship service. Pastor Micah preaches on Matthew 14:13-21, a passage where the Gospel of Matthew transitions from Jesus telling people what the kingdom of heaven is like to instead showing them what it is like.
Sermon from our July 30, 2017 (Eighth Sunday after Pentecost) worship service. Pastor Micah completes his Romans 7 & 8 Series with a sermon on the wonderful Romans 8:26-39, all while having a little fun with the classic movie plot device of sinking in quicksand. (Reader: Andrea Garnett)
Sermon from our July 23, 2017 (Seventh Sunday after Pentecost). In the third of four sermons in his Romans 7 & 8 series, Pastor Micah took to Facebook Live and built a periscope to show us how hope helps us to see above our challenges and problems to see God’s love. Note: This is a condensed audio version of the sermon, which is much more helpful in the Facebook video version on Trinity’s page. The delays in the audio version come from Pastor Micah sitting down in the pulpit and–laboriously–getting back up! `(Reader: Colleen Conrad)
Sermon from our July 16, 2017 (Sixth Sunday after Pentecost. In the second of four sermons in his Romans 7 & 8 series, Pastor Micah contrasts the helpful daily guidance of the Holy Spirit with the general unhelpfulness of Leslie Nielsen’s character from the 1980 movie Airplane!, Dr. Rumack, with his classic deadpan line: “Just wanted to tell you both good luck. We’re all counting on you.” (Reader: Dawn Parsons)
Sermon from our July 9, 2017 (Fifth Sunday after Pentecost) worship service. Pastor Micah begins a series on chapters 7 and 8 of Romans with Romans 7:15-25, a text in which the Apostle Paul transforms the phrase “I can’t” from a shameful admission into a faithful confession. (Reader: Mary Williams)
Sermon from our June 18, 2017 (Second Sunday after Pentecost) worship service. Pastor Micah preaches on Jesus sending the Twelve Disciples on their first mission trip, from Matthew ch. 9 & 10. This story helps us understand how the great big Mission of God gets translated into action in the world!
Sermon from our June 11, 2017 (Holy Trinity) worship service. Pastor Micah preaches on Jesus’ Great Commission to his disciples (Matthew 28:16-20), offering 3 important things that story teaches us about God’s mission:
God has a misssion.
God’s mission has the church.
The church has YOU.
