in the meantime a good rule of thumb is a fist length from the mic which being in a band etc you probably already know but it sounds like you might also be using some onboard or outboard comp/limiter with the gain/ratio set too high? adjusting this might fix the hard clipping. if i saw your set up i could diagnose the prob immediately but it's likely the case you already have ppl who know about these things just wanted to help by bringing the issue to your attention good luck

if i had to the money i would happily send you a Shure SM7B not sure what mixer you use but regardless the first place to start for that hard clipping would be your microphone & something like a Soundcraft GB2R Mixer so you could sound as good as your program deserves.
