Stu Watts chats with Nadav Cohen (aka aMess). Raised on an eclectic mix of classic rock, Buddha-Bar and electronic music from his father’s collection, the 25-year-old producer and instrumentalist has been consistently releasing vibrant, sonically rich soundscapes for over half a decade.

Stu Watts chats with Becki Whitton, who is an engineer, songwriter and producer working out of Melbourne’s Carriage Studio. Her approach in the studio balances focus and ease, and centres on a thirst to find the most powerful expression of a song’s emotional core. Becki has received ARIA, AWMA, MPEG and Music Victoria Award nominations for her sound work, and managed sound for Girls Rock! Camp ACT from 2016-2022. In her solo electronic choral project Aphir, Becki has been hailed as part of ‘Australia’s new wave of female electronic innovators’ and has performed around Australia and internationally including performances at Music Tech Fest (Berlin), Denmark Arts (WA), and Falls Festival.
Since 2016, Becki has released music through experimental label Provenance Records, founded by Stuart Buchanan (New Weird Australia) and, following Buchanan’s departure from the label, turned Provenance into an artist cooperative in 2021. Throughout 2020 - 2021 Becki embraced the challenges of pandemic lockdown through live-streaming on Twitch - first producing, recording, and mixing her 2020 LP, Republic of Paradise on livestream, and then pursuing marathon-length vocal improvisations on Twitch throughout 2021, culminating in a 12-hour performance on Boxing Day that year.
Becki has been actively involved in the left-field music community through the creation of The Wettest 100 - an alternative to Triple J’s Hottest 100 which was voted on Instagram and which celebrated 100 Australian tracks (narrowed down from 185 nominations) which sit outside the genre-world of the Hottest 100 countdown. Stu Watts chats with Calvin Bennett, a Western Australian-based producer, songwriter and musician whose credits list to date reads like that of someone at least 10 years his senior.
Having signed last year a worldwide distribution deal with Downtown Music Services/DashGo, Bennett’s successes to date include two Western Australian Music Song of the Year Awards (and another seven nominations) for both his solo work and indie-pop duo Farraday’s Cage who was awarded the Nannup Music Festival Emerging Artist Award, has enjoyed national airtime on radio Triple J and have supported the likes of San Cisco, Justice Crew and Killing Heidi.
Mellow and understated are two words that could also describe Bennett’s personality, basing his work on total transparency as he establishes himself as a go-to producer for any and all musical ideas, which you can hear on collaborations with modern lo-fi innovators like 9ick, 7ove and Soul Food Horns, as well as fellow local artists on the rise including Alannah Chapman, Elianie, Jewel Owusu and Jarrod Jeremiah.
Now running Studio 156 in Perth, WA, with producer Roc, next up for Bennett will be a slew of more productions, both expanding his solo catalogue as well as his reputation as a musical production nomad, working with a range of artists from L.A. to Europe as he draws closer to his goal of global writing residencies.
