Banded is America’s newest music competition series! Musician and TV personality Brandon Jenner hosts the innovative show, and Mark Schulman, guitarist for P!nk, is one of the all-star judges. They give a behind-the-scenes look at the process of breaking a band. My guest is legendary baseball player, Hall of Famer, Johnny Bench. Considered the best catcher to ever play the game, and the heart of the Big Red Machine, Johnny spent all 17 of his seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. He won the Gold Glove Award TEN TIMES, and he won two World Series. But, because of all that time in the sun, Johnny was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common type of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Today, he’s cancer free and a vocal champion for efforts to Get Real About Skin Cancer. We chatted about what it’s like to be the best catcher of all time, what it was like playing for the Reds for his entire career, who his favorite catcher is now, who he still keeps in touch with, and so much more. Johnny also shares life-saving tips about his journey with cancer, and what you can do to catch non-melanoma skin cancer before it advances. He joins me along with leading board-certified dermatologist and skin cancer expert, Dr. Ariel Ostad.

Frank Thomas grew up playing both baseball and football, but he got his official start in baseball at Auburn University in 1987 when he hit a .359 in his freshman season. He made MVP in his junior season of 1989, and left school that summer when he was taken with the 7th overall pick by the White Sox. One year later, he made his big-league debut hitting .330 with 31 RBI in 60 games. He would stay ensconced as the White Sox’s first baseman and designated hitter for the next 15 years and quickly earned the name “The Big Hurt” for the damage he inflicted on opposing pitchers.
