The anime drought officially ends on this month's What A Cartoon podcast with a VERY long episode about that '90s VHS fantasy/comedy classic, Slayers! While this charming series tragically never found a home on American television, it still thrived in its own bubble; and if you were part of the anime subculture around Y2K, it's likely you were briefly involved in Slayers-mania. It's a series worthy of exploration, and to fully plumb the depths of this animated D&D session, we've recruited Slayers fan and Wife of the Show Nina Matsumoto to help out—and she's brought some original research never-before-heard by an English-speaking audience. So listen in as we transport you back to an era when Pocky was still an incredibly rare and valuable commodity. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's another podcast about Superman! (Please have your eyes examined.) Yes, we last checked in on the Man of Steel's '90s adaptation during the dawn of COVID, but with Superman fever currently sweeping the nation, there's never been a better time to discuss one of this underappreciated series' finest episodes. So listen in as Superman goes toe-to-toe with one of his most insidious foes: the carceral state! Hot on the heels of Fox Kids' Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men, Marvel brought us Fantastic Four, the first animated adaptation of the publisher's First Family in over 15 years. And, after a disastrous initial season, the series finally reached the coveted rank of "above average"—though it never went on to be remembered as fondly as its contemporaries. This month on What A Cartoon, join us for the podcast equivalent of clobberin' time as we take a gander at a confused production that did its best to right the ship before the end of its short run. What's this? Your regular episode of What A Cartoon, being interrupted by something completely different? No, you're not the victim of a dastardly Joker scheme—though you'll at least hear us talk about one of those. As a little diversion from our regular programming schedule, this month we're swapping out the standard episode of WAC with a brand-new episode of our Blabbin 'Bout Batman miniseries. A whole decade before Futurama wowed Fox viewers with its masterful mix of sci-fi and comedy, BBC Two launched Red Dwarf, an outer space version of The Odd Couple set three million years in the future. And, over the course of the last 30-plus years, this cult hit evolved beyond its simple sitcom premise and has seen plenty of planet-hopping adventures, alternate realities, doppelgangers, computer simulations, and GELFs. On this episode of What A Cartoon, join us as we hop 'cross the pond and explore Red Dwarf: the series that embiggened our vocabularies with words like "smeg," "goit," and "gimboid." Thanks to premium patron ToonJay, we're continuing our coverage of all things Craig McCracken with a look at his short-lived series, Wander Over Yonder. Listen in as we explore two distinctly different episodes of this colorful, snappy cartoon: one that sends up the worst period of TV animation, and another that depicts the possible rehabilitation of an evil robot via the power of friendship (and floppy sun hats). Our first regular What A Cartoon of 2025 showcases a huge part of US animation history: Craig McCracken's The Powerpuff Girls! On this episode, we chart the growth of Townsville's favorite kids from dorm room shorts to early Hanna-Barbera pilots to Cartoon Network's eternal cash cow. So listen in and help us celebrate two of our favorite episodes from the first season—both of which feature the greatest villain, Mojo JoJo! Finally lost my liking for the show. Unbearably pretentious political nutcases. Talk about cartoons and not about your politics. If you have such strong ideals, you should become an elected representative of your locality and actually make some change in it. You pretentious pricks.

I really should go back to the beginning with Archer...I think I missed a bit of the old-timey series, too.

I loved this series as a kid and while a bit hokey to watch now it still holds up as a good post-apocalyptic story. It is weird that it didn't spawn a toy line back then, I definitely would've wanted action figures, vehicles, and playsets.

I dozed off listening to this episode, woke up and they're still going on about it...I feel like some considerable editing should've been done here. Nearly 2 hours to talk about a 22-minute cartoon is a bit too inflated, even for this bunch.

I wish I'd have watched this back when it aired...it sounds like something I really would've dug. might have to seek out the DVDs or see if Disney+ has it to stream.

Bob's Burgers is not only one of my favorite animated shows but one of my all-time favorite shows overall. The summer before it aired my kids and I would see the same clip over and over when we'd go to GameStop, who were showing it on their in-store advertising video-loop. We couldn't wait. My youngest had watched them all and will make occasional dips into the series here and there to watch old favorite eps. And, to be honest, I'll watch anything H. Jon Benjamin does. I love his Arby's ads.

Not sure how the fellas managed to gloss over how much Maxx sounds like Xavier: Renegade Angel (though Maxx came first, of course.)

I haven't watched Harvey Birdman in years. Definitely gonna take Bob & Henry's advice and binge it all on Hulu.

The nerve of them shitting on the English dub, while this show is co-hosted by Henry Gilbert is.... mm... I couldn't imagine a more ironic instance.

Do you guys have any plans to compare older shows against their newest counterparts? Like Voltron vs Voltron: Legendary Defender ?
