Description
What happens after the experiences of true crime survivors have been shared with the world? Does the media truly capture all it entails to survive such tragedy in the public eye? What comes after the convictions are in, the cameras stop rolling, and the court of public opinion has spoken? Can sharing our stories lead to justice, and is there ever really justice?
These questions and many more are discussed on the new true crime docuseries podcast brought to you by Broken Cycle Media.
What Came Next is co-created and produced by Something Was Wrong’s Tiffany Reese and host, award-winning writer, victim advocate and true crime survivor Amy B. Chesler.
On What Came Next, you’ll hear firsthand accounts from those impacted, with behind the scenes insights about what came next for survivors after their stories were shared with the world, and how the media impacts crime victims and their loved ones.

Janelle Hill is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and survivor from Montana. She and I first had the chance to meet each other at an intimate dinner celebrating the survivor-founded non-profit, The Army of Survivors, and their newest evolution: a full rebranding as The Athlete Survivor's Assist. Janelle currently proudly serves on their advisory board, and shared a bit of her story that evening. I was deeply moved by her strength, expertise, and ability to encapsulate her difficult experiences with grace and relatability. The Broken Cycle Media team is grateful Janelle took the time to share her story of survivorship and about her advocacy work with our audience in the following two episodes.

Marlee Liss is a survivor,award-winning speaker, victim advocate, somatic educator, and author from Toronto, Canada. She grew up in the arts, but pivoted to social work when she began her college career. It was in Marlee’s junior year when her life changed forever; she became the victim of a sexual assault and entered an arduous journey in the criminal justice system as a result. However, three years into that battle for justice, Marlee found an additional path: restorative justice. According to Walden University, quote “Punitive justice is the idea of punishing criminals for their crimes against society or the legal system itself, and is the traditional method of handling crime in the United States. Restorative justice seeks to bring victims of crimes into the justice process. Criminals are asked to take accountability for their wrongdoing by facing those they have wronged... The theory is that criminals owe more than a debt to society—they owe a debt to specific people,” end quote. The two processes are not always mutually exclusive. It’s important to note that criminal justice can occur tandemly with restorative justice practices. The Broken Cycle Media team is so very grateful for Marlee's powerful perspective advocacy and time and energy in sharing in this episode.

Ti is an incredibly resilient multi-crime survivor from Madagascar. She first joined a dating app in her mid-20’s with the hope of finding the love of her life. She wasn’t expecting to be swept off her feet and away to America, but life had other plans for her. However, when she arrived in Michigan by way of Chicago, she was shocked to quickly learn the highly abusive nature of her new husband’s actions. Ti soon found herself escaping a marriage with a man who not only worked to systematically crush her spirit, but also allegedly sex trafficked her. The heartache did not end there though; after freeing herself and fleeing to another state, she watched from afar as her ex-husband’s violence reached an insurmountable point. The Broken Cycle Media team is in deep awe of Ti’s resilience and has immense gratitude for her vulnerability amidst these episodes.

Debbie Riddle is a graphic designer, mother, wife, survivor of stalking, and co-victim of murder from Ohio. However, her ex-boyfriend began viciously and relentlessly stalking Peggy, her family members, and Peggy’s new boyfriend, Mark. Then, on January 18th, 2003, the stalking would end tragically. Content Warning: infidelity, physical abuse, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, and murder.
Jenn Holman is a survivor, mother, and faithful family woman living in Idaho by way of Southern California. Our paths first crossed over eighteen years ago, when she began dating my brother (whom she has chosen to address as Jesse in this episode, although I have referred to him as ‘Rory’ in the past). Her relationship with Jesse began a year and a few months prior to my mother’s murder, and although I was privy to a portion of what Jenn will share in this conversation, some of the more explicit details of the abuse she faced evaded us as a family. Through this interview, I've also now learned a lot more about the night my mom was murdered. I commend her bravery in sharing, and am personally, deeply grateful she was willing to divulge so much with us today. It may have taken us nearly eighteen years to have this conversation, but as Hippocrates said, “Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity.”

Norma Buster is a survivor, speaker, podcaster, and Chief of Staff at C.A. Goldberg Law, a Brooklyn-based victims rights law firm. Norma grew up with a passion for fashion, but after experiencing harassment and image-based sexual abuse at a pivotal point in her life, Norma was inspired to help other victims. She does so in her position at the legal firm, and she also continues that mission with her speaking and podcasting efforts. Her show, Oral Arguments, is geared towards sex positivity and empowerment, especially in relation to tech and victims rights. The Broken Cycle Media team is incredibly grateful for Norma’s advocacy work, as well as her candidness throughout this very empowering, illuminating conversation.

Content warning: coercion, blackmail, extortion, abduction, kidnapping, slavery, sociopathy, psychopathy, intimate partner violence, and attempted murder.
Megan is a loving family woman, equestrian, and survivor of abduction and attempted slavery born in Southern California. Although Megan spent many of her younger years growing her love for horses at her family’s idyllic Colorado stable, her life prior was anything but calm. In fact, Megan was originally named Fallon Daniel, and on November 21st, 1985, Megan’s birth father would attempt to extort $90,000 from the couple who would eventually adopt and raise her. After an unprecedented case that took the media by storm, Megan has joined us to share about all that’s come next for her in her journey and healing. The Broken Cycle Media team is undeniably grateful for my friend’s candor and advocacy, especially as this is the first time she’s shared her story at-large. We are also grateful for Megan’s mother, Susan, who was willing to join us for a short chat, which you will hear within this episode as well.

I loved this! I'm a 26 year TBI survivor. I was in a coma for 10 days after a rollover car accident. my TBI was compared to shakenbaby syndrome. I didn't know you could get shaken baby syndrome at the age of 25! LOL one thing I can say is that you will continue to see improvements probably As Long As You Are alive. I have my ups and downs and definitely still struggle with some things but, as I said I continually see Improvement
I would be heartbroken too. Sounded like a great human and a wonderful dad.
this is one of the best episodes of this podcast!
I’m loving this new take on true crime and Survivor story
