So you're an employee on a 90 day probation? Why does this thing exist? What can you do to crush it and be the most valuable employee inside of that 90 days? Here's a few ideas.
Often used to describe someone’s performance People use it in many different ways- mostly when they are trying to recruit new people A quick search on indeed.com yields 5906 jobs with the title or description including “Rock Star” But what is a Rock Star REALLY? Why do you want them? Why you don't. What does that actually mean and why does everyone care so much about hiring rock stars? In this video I dive into the real characteristics of rock stars for your practice and help you determine if rock stars are really what you want.
In this video we look at habits. But not from a “These habits are bad or these habits are good” These are the habits you should have and these are the ones that you should avoid. What I’m concerned with is aligned habits. Aligned habits are those habits which support your version of ownership satisfaction. Habits are important because they are the only the enablers of your leadership mindset. Habits are the primary actions that influence outcomes, results, and success. As a business owner, there are days when I’m 100% in love with my business. Other days, I’m challenged to be hyper engaged and realize the satisfaction. And, as my business grows and the environment around it changes, there are opportunities to have that change drive dissatisfaction because things aren’t working as I had intended. Maybe it’s time for me to reconsider my habits in response to my changing business so I can influence the result to my 100% satisfaction. It’s a kind of simple math. To secure a different outcome, the inputs need to change. Its time to change my routines and habits in response to my business challenges so I’m able to better respond. The micro routines that are in our lives all add up to some kind of result. And that result is either satisfying or it is not. From there, the pain that’s generated by failure is either great and forces a change response OR the pain is tolerable and we perceive that the cost to change is too high. We stay put, enduring some amount of pain and nothing changes. A potential solution to leadership dissatisfaction- Aligning Routines and Habits to Your Goals

Possibly the toughest position to be in as a business owner Shutdown orders are made Income falls off of the table Employees are let go Loads of financial obligations An uncertain future to be sure Now that we have several weeks of closure New guidelines from CDC, OSHA, and PPE supplies are catching up to massive demand States and offices opening over time. Should I sell? Am I losing practice value? What can I do to retain value in my practice? We meet up with Steve Hipson and Matthew Howard to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on your practice's value, how the shutdown impacts the market for buyers, and what you can do to ensure you get a fair value for your practice.
In the work we do, risk management, I’ve always said that the result of unmanaged risk is loss of practice value. Usually the causes of risk are mostly known, can be mostly managed, and thus we can preserve practice value. There are many potential risks that a business can face, and each risk requires a specific set of risk management strategies. In this case, environmental risk such as a pandemic, could not be planned for or managed at the practice level. However, moving forward we have to adopt a risk management mindset so we can begin the process of preparing our practice for sale. There’s a lot of work to be done here so more conversations will be had. So what’s changed with this pandemic and economic shut down and how will this impact your practice’s value? I think there are a number of items that we should consider.
Cary meets up with famed Dr. Amy Jackson of South Texas Orthodontics to see how she's been handling the reopening process, leadership thoughts on bringing the practice into compliance, and information on her new retainer program for orthodontists.

“Experience Sails With The Ship” Troubled seas faces Joshua Slocum in 1892 "Sailing Alone Around the World" Published in 1900 He was given a rotting ship Fixed it and sailed 46000 miles alone around the world in a ship called spray…by himself. Three year trip. The lessons in this book, while not directly intended for this consequence, might have use Lesson 1 The will be troubled waters and the ocean in is “grandest mood” We have to go into this experience because this is where the wind is taking us. We have to adapt and steer our ship as best as we can. "Dangers there are, to be sure, on the sea as well as the land, but the intelligence and skill god gives to man, REDUCE these to a minimum.” Lesson 2 Understand that this experience is happening and you can either wither with a disease of the mind OR Take this situation, embrace it for what it is, and endure as best as you can. Recognize we’re all going through this and now is time for community. As my friend Max Kerr says…It’s time for Team Human “You must then know the sea, and know that you know it, and not forget that it was meant to be sailed over” This experience is here for a purpose and maybe, just maybe, you were meant to be here to influence the outcome. Lesson 3 Take advantage of these lessons, create learnings, pass them on. This will be tough This will be painful Generations can learn from this Adapt to the situation Adopt new habits Implement new practices “Practice in a craft such as the Spray (one that is not optimal and maybe difficult) will teach young sailors and fit them for the more important vessels” In this case the future. The days passed happily with me wherever my ship sailed.
