The interest in the history of magic, witchcraft and the occult has seen a discernible rise in the last 25 years. In many cases, our picture of its story through the ages has been made much clearer. This is certainly true for Solomonic Magic, a form of magic in which the magician takes their rituals from Grimoires in order to evoke spirits and bind them to do their bidding. However, new research and perspectives have urged us that we might need to revise our understandings of this powerful and alluring variety of magic. It's time for a revisit.
Simply put, Demonology is the study of Demons; what they do and how they interact with humans. While most cultures throughout time here in the west have had their own specific Demonology, from the middle ages onwards a particularly strong sort of European Demonology formed. This Demonology eventually lead to the hunt and persecution of tens of thousands of people for hundreds of years as witches and sorcerers. How this Demonology took shape is both fascinating and very telling of how our society conceives and adopts deleterious paradigms during certain periods of time.
We live in an infinitely complex cosmos, more alive and chaotic than any of us can ever imagine. Throughout human history, the great mystery of our existence has been rendered to us mortals through certain messages. These messages and the ones bearing them have seemingly been contextualized in many ways through many cultures. Here in the western world, we have given them a name- Angels. These figures have not lost any of their influence throughout the centuries; basically everyone knows what an Angel looks like. Yet, most people do not know exactly what they are, or what they supposedly do. If there is one entity which has been sanitized and overly familiarized to us, it is the Angel. We must look closer.
Excellent news, weirdos- The Great What Magic is This? Podcast Hiatus of 2025 is coming to an end! The show will be returning shortly with a newish presentation and new ambitions. It's a little bit of a restoration of the values and ambitions which started the show back in 2019. And why not share the news on the 6th Anniversary of the first episode of What Magic is This? being released. I hope you're excited!
One of the most asked questions that I get, is about something which has already been covered on the podcast previously but perhaps needs a bit more context. Hermeticism is hard to get one's head around already, but what does somebody who calls themself a "Hermeticist" actually believe and more than that- what do they actually do? Taking us through this form of mysticism, and as a bonus, how Magical Timing can help your magic is my favourite person to talk to about Magic- The one and only Sam Block.
Happy 2025 Humble Listeners! We made it! I thought that this would be an appropriate time to make a small announcement. Please be sure to have a listen to get some news regarding What Magic is This? Not unlike the Celts, if you head to your local New Age Occult store you will notice that there is an overabundance of Runes. From necklace pendants, to books, to divination stones and more- Runes are seemingly overrepresented. But much of what makes Runes so special has been lost in the mix. Here to help us through why Runes are not always what meets the eye in both scholarly and New age circles, is Podcaster and author Siri Vincent Plouff!
It has been quite some time since What Magic is This? has had the chance to talk about one of the most important figures of High Strangeness in the last 100 years. Robert Anton Wilson was a phenomenon unlike any other, but he had a very particular mixture of influences all of which came through in his worldviews and his work. Discussing with Doug why Bob is still a fellow worth knowing and reading, is the one person who started Doug down this very particular path of Magic. We are beyond delighted to finally welcome to the Podcast the counterculture éminence grise- Richard Metzger!
As far as we can look back into our past, humanity has both interacted with and been haunted by the spirits of the dead. The tales of apparitions and hauntings pervade not only our most popular art but also our psyche; seemingly everyone has a ghost story to tell. While modern skepticism waves away ghosts as being merely the product of fear and imagination, many these days are saying that it is not so simple. Ghosts still have much to tell us, if we allow ourselves to be willingly haunted by the ideas that they bring forth.
Most Grimoires which are housed in the many museums and collections around the world are somewhat well copied documents that seems to have been done by professionals. Yet every once in a while what shows up like a bad penny in these collections are very obviously personal Grimoires that you can tell have been worked on and with by at least one but in some cases a few practicing magicians. What these astounding documents show us within their pages can tell us a lot about not only the times in which they were used, but how magic has evolved through the ages. No one knows Magician's Workbooks quite like the greatest Cunning Man of our age- Dr. Alexander Cummins.
For over 200 years, France was inundated with small cheaply produced books, bound with blue covers, filled with some of the most amazing things. These were the Bibliothèque bleue. Lots of these books would be about food, or fairy-tales, or astrology. Yet the most notorious of the Bibliothèque bleue, were the books on Magic, charms and spells. These are called Blue Grimoires today. Helping us get our fingers inky with why these small chapbooks were so important to magic, is author and magician Aaman Lamba.
After King Solomon, the legend of Cyprian of Antioch looms quite large in the Western Magical Tradition. A spirit conjurer and occasional summoner of the devil, Cyprian later converted to Christianity and became a Bishop before being martyred. This legend had quite some traction, as many grimoires evoked the name of Cyprian within their pages and in the title of the Grimoire itself particularly in Iberia. Taking the listeners through the Book of Saint Cyprian, is the scholar of Portuguese esotericism and author José Leitão!

Southeast Asia has always been a place with many magical and animistic cultures. Perhaps no other country in the modern age has such a sycretic and extraordinary Magical environment than the land of smiles- Thailand. From spirits and ghosts to tattoos and amulets to monks and ajarns, Thailand is a place which still lives and breathes magic. Helping us get an introduction to the vast Magical world of the Thai, is author and practitioner of Thai Magic, Peter Jenx!
It's time to kick around an idea that gets brought up and used quite a bit these days. Unverified personal Gnosis are the terms used to describe a belief gained through personal subjective experience, not things which are confirmed by traditions or in groups. They usually inform the belief system of those that experience them. On this episode, we will be talking with someone whose entire practice is based around Unverified Personal Gnosis. That's right! It's the long-awaited return of author and animist sorcerer Aidan Wachter!
For the last 50 years, many people around the world but particularly in the west, identify themselves as a witch and if asked what religion they ascribe to, will say Wicca. Despite what some claim, the roots of Wicca are thoroughly modern and go back no further than the 20th century. Indeed, Wicca has been dubbed the only fully formed religion that England has given the world. Many myths and misconceptions surround Wicca, so much so that even those who claim to be a Wiccan will be unaware of many of the finer details of its origins. To set the record straight is Wiccan Priestess, author and owner of the greatest occult bookshop in the world, Christina Oakley-Harrington!
Throughout the centuries, one figure has flittered through both folkloric and fortean encounters. To some, this figure has simply been called the Devil, yet others aren't so hasty to place such an epithet on him. When we look into the past, A Dark Man has made their presence known in many ways. Some within the confines of the occult and witchcraft would even go so far as to call this Dark Man the witchfather. Digging deeper into the lore of the Dark Man is our guest, the podcaster and author of the new book Song of the Dark Man- Darragh Mason!
Without a doubt, the second most recognizable and used Tarot deck in existence is the Thoth Tarot. While many are familiar with the originator of this deck, the Great Beast himself, Aleister Crowley, less is known about perhaps the most important person in this decks popularity- Lady Frieda Harris. In this episode, we are focussing solely on this infamous deck, the two figures who brought it to life, and the history of it. No one knows this deck better than my guest- Lon Milo Duquette!
Grab a Snapple™ and make sure your tips are frosted, we're going back to the distant, far off time of the decade right before Y2K ended everything. The decade kicked off with a shaky start, as distrust in the government boiled over leading to all sorts of interests in what we all perceived was being hidden from us. In this episode, we are joined by Artist and illustrator Brian Giordano as we take a closer look at all the weirdness and fringe topics which fascinated the consensus culture of America. It's a totally, majorly good time.
We truly live in a golden age for Magic, the Occult and all the high strangeness that comes with it. There are many of the greatest thinkers to ever tackle these strange and weird concepts alive right now; at this very moment. Every paradigm needs its heroes and villains, but more importantly- those who broaden and illuminate the ideas which are its very lifeblood. For Magic, one person has been the greatest promulgator of thinking magically for the last 50 years- And that is Ramsey Dukes.
can confirm Value Village would not re-sell ouija boards (late 1980s, Spokane, WA USA)
how wonderful it must be to know so much
is there any topic Doug doesn't bitch and whine about?
one of my favorite episodes
Led Zeppelin IV is the most over rated album of all time? Seriously? 😆 🤣 😂
I don't mean to judge it too harshly since it's so old, but this episode was disappointing. The whole segment about Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst was really good! But most of everything else just felt... kinda bitter and partially off? And I don't mean to discount your feelings over a religion you left, so imma focus on the inaccuracy. And what I say is my subjective opinion mixed with personal experience and the contents of any texts I directly reference. It's really just two points. That made up a significant portion of the episode. The first one's personal. You talk about the Principia as mostly just recycling the same joke of "institutional religion sucks! haha". It isn't, it really isn't. It regularly refers to various religions, showcasing versions focused on discordian principles, like the Sacred Dao to the Sacred Chao, and also occasionally pokes holes into or critiques the institution of Christianity, for example declaring that hell is up and heaven on earth; but it's less making fu
This is really interesting. I've never been able to work well with dreams because I retain too few details, so this seems like a great point to start!
difficult to hear this audio
And the entire thing is fake.
I'm sorry......but.....( who ) m is " in " your explanation of this show ? Have you read it ?
No.....eating or injesting plants is not majick . Being in a natural state of mind is what gives and projects your internal energy........Not tripping on psychedelics.
Ridiculous that everyone only cares about one thing : to get everything you want because your selfish....and just "getting off" is all they care about...My god... .....There are so many other things in this world people could put their eager energy into......
I'm sorry but I refuse to settle, this is the episode I've been waiting for since I found your podcast! Thanks for making my Saturday morning, you guys rule and I love you both🖤
I've held off writing this, til I consumed the whole first year, to give a real review. This is the first time in years that I've caught fully up to date with a podcast, waiting for a new episode without there being a back catalog to look to. So that on its own shows how much I dig Doug's work. If you're curious about magical, and esoteric practices or notable figures in those arts, then you'll dig it too. Doug clearly does his research and is gradually building a catalog of some of the best summaries of these topics on the web. These episodes are matched with fantastic footnotes that will leave you swearing Doug's name for the size of your next Amazon bill to fill your new reading list. I love the format of having a guest who generally knows little to nothing about the topic they have picked from a rather large list of topics, essentially get tutored by Doug, while you listen in. It creates a new perspective in the delivery of a podcast to me that I thoroughly enjoyed. Do yourself a
