Another Oscar year is nearing but it wouldn’t be official for us here at Whiskey Business without our annual visit from George Wolf and Hope Madden from The Screening Room podcast.  There may appear to be some slam dunks if you’re in an Oscar pool, but I’m going to suggest you listen up/or watch to see if some upsets are predicted as well in our discussion of Oscar gold.  If you love the movies it’s one of our favorite podcasts of the year. And if you only saw BARBIE, this is your chance to get educated before Oscars are awarded on March 10, 2024.  That being said, I’d like to thank the podcast academy, my audio and video producers, my family who seldom listens… Learn more about your ad choices. Whiskey Business loves being the first kid on the block with something special and on this podcast we got the sneak peek of some NEW Irish Whiskeys from BUA which originates here in Columbus but is made with tender, Irish care in Ireland. What I called “fightin’ whiskey was a single grain but there were also some single malts that were finished in tawny port casks, ALL of them great including the BUA Original which has come a long way since we sampled Batch #1 a few years back.  Great whiskey coupled with great stories from Martin and Pat made for a great podcast that went “into the wee” hours of the evening and probably could gone on even more. Enjoy this batch of podcasting with a good pour, but if I were you…I’d bring the whole bottle. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
A “lobbyist” is NOT a strange person who hangs out in hotel lobbies. Got it.  They are however, the behind the scenes movers and shakers of influence; be it political, business related or other miscellaneous agendas.  Steve Dimon has been a lobbyist for 30 plus years and gave us an inside look into the job that some deem as evil while others consider it a needed ally for success. What are YOUR perceptions? Validate them or be surprised at how this world really works on this latest edition of WHISKEY BUSINESS.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It’s easy to see why we think Dan is "The Man" on this particular podcast because our good friend, Dan Swarthout has worn many hats over the course of his life: lawyer, comedian, Mayor of Powell, Ohio, 18+ years of comedically prepping a crowd before the start of Ohio Lottery’s Cash Explosion TV show (taking a breath here) “early” podcast pioneer, and TV historian! The show could’ve been, in length, about any of the above, but we tried to cover them all and in the process went down some delightful rabbit holes that will surprise and please. Whiskey Business kicked off the New Year with a new bourbon and a fairly new distillery to usher in 2024.  Leather and Oak Spirits founded in 2019 out of Hilliard, Ohio joined the podcast as Steve Lambert and Dave Sheppard shared their journey with not only a fine bourbon but also a nice limoncello that the boys crank out with love and care.  The bourbon was about as old school as you could get. 100% corn. The limoncello was about as old country as you could get as they eventually got the recipe from a lovely Italian woman who finally caved and allowed Steve and Dave to share it with the world.  It’s a fun chat about the love of whiskey and more importantly the time and care that goes into making a good one. Our annual Christmas Podcast didn’t disappoint as joy, laughter and true sentiment guided the evening. Join us as we talk with friends and former podcast guests about 2023 and what lies ahead in 2024 while we plowed through some remnant bottles and some Gatto’s Pizza. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah (I know it’s over) and Happy Kwanza. And if you have no religious affiliations…Happy December! See you in 2024!!! Learn more about your ad choices. Comedian Mike Larsen returned to Whiskey Business and was locked and comedically loaded to talk about the aftermath of November 7th voting in Ohio, while also taking a peek at the presidential election in 2024.     Politics are always divisive but if we don’t find a way to laugh, we cry. No tears on this episode. The conversation got serious at times but laughter was never too far away.     Larsen, who had a long career in television comedy writing while living in Los Angeles actually ran for office here in Ohio when he decided to call it career in Hollywood and come back to simpler ways of living. Yeah. So run for office. Thats simple. He witnessed the political machinery first hand and came away “funnier” and wiser for the experience.      Enjoy this episode as we offer up humor, empathy, apathy, some objectivity and as is the case with politics- no real answers. Whiskey Business took it on the road for our annual Halloween episode in front of a live audience. Recorded at The Jury Room, this bar is considered to be one of the most haunted public drinking establishments in Ohio. From murdering Madams to bereaved and suicidal fathers, we covered a lot of supernatural bases with the bar’s owner, Megan Dempsey and our very own Ghost Whisperer, Ralph Scott. Are you a believer? This podcast may give you pause and make you wonder if you’re not.  Also in the mix was Chris Hamel who joined us to talk about the upcoming Nightmares Film Festival coming to The Gateway Theater in Columbus. Who knows? Maybe you’re coming to it as it’s been dubbed “The Cannes of the horror film genre.” A spooky good time was had by all along with special mixes of alcoholic “spirits”concocted by our friend, Jesse Hubbard. Tune in. If…you…dare. Eh. That’s too much. Just listen. It’s good. Cheers.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month and for years, Dino has been a huge advocate for the families and The Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio which you may commonly know as DSACO.  But there’s nothing common about these families and the organization. On the heels of another successful DSACO BUDDY WALK, it gave us great pleasure to welcome Kari Jones and Mike Messina to share stories, insights, progress and what’s still left to do further awareness and education. There’s also information about a great event with FADO’S and Clyde Mays Whiskey taking place on October 11 that will bring whiskey lovers and supporters together for a magical night. Get inspired, enlightened and entertained with this latest episode of Whiskey Business. Cheers! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
And now that we have your attention, we’re talking about Bocce, as Chris and Dante Lovell, AKA The Bocce Bros returned to Whiskey Business to talk about the rising popularity of the sport, be you a casual player or a competitive one. But as is the case on our show we went down several paths: sibling rivalries, family, relationships, crazy stories from the past and yeah…some metaphorical “ball busting.” All if it accompanied by a bottle of Sagamore Rye which went down faster than a striking bocce ball. A lot of fun. A lot of laughs. And a lot of whiskey. (They dove into my stash once the Sagamore was drained.) Pickleball ain’t nothin’! Bocce, baby…Bocce. Enjoy.  Learn more about your ad choices. Bill Demora returned to Whiskey Business as we had to accommodate his annual rite of football passage and have him on to ensure at the very least…a winning season for THE Ohio State Buckeyes.  This time around the superstitious landscape was a little different as he is now a state Senator for Ohio and his commitment to the office could incur havoc to his firmly entrenched traditions. We discussed the season, the QB situation, what happens if Coach Ryan Day loses three in a row to Michigan and would he run for office again if for some reason the Buckeyes lost with this change in his work dynamic. Insane? Yeah. It was. But fun as hell to watch or listen to. Can a Buckeye season hinge on one man? He seems to think so.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Longtime friend of Whiskey Business, Jesse Hubbard returned to the podcast to talk about his recent book, Punk Rock and Cocktails Vol. 2 but of course the conversation drifted into so much more in respects to music. First concerts, fave concerts, what decade do you wish you could’ve musically lived in, and yeah…Barry Manilow confessions.  A good time shared over a bottle Willet Family Estate Small Batch Rye, it was another for the books along with a “book” you should add to you collection.  Learn more about your ad choices. Whiskey Business got reacquainted with itself as The Boys have been busy in their own worlds outside the podcast. Trips to Tulsa, vacations in Michigan, a taping for true crime episode for Oxygen, and a short stand in The World Series of Poker. Oh, and Greg’s dad joined us. A delightful chat with John Hansberry which gave us a little more insight into our audio producer, Greg who I affectionately refer to as “the son I never wanted.” A fun podcast with a bottle of E.H. Taylor Small Batch Bottled in Bond to go along with it. Enjoy.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Improv comedian, actor, and (yes) math professor returned to Whiskey Business for another fun and unpredictable visit that included unexpected encounters with Dave Chappelle, Tina Fey, making independent films, how to properly write off your gas mileage (See? Math!) and the trials and tribulations of taking your 85-year-old father to renew his driver’s license. Yeah, a lot of fun on this. Dare I say, something for everybody? I dare. Enjoy. The boys of Echo Spirits, Nikhil Sharoff and Joe Bidinger returned to Whiskey Business to get down to some, well…Whiskey Business.  On the heels of their recently released rye, the boys have introduced not one but TWO new bourbons to their stable. I mean, if you’re gonna make a bourbon why not throw a single barrel into the mix why you’re doing it, right?  It’s another win for Echo and a great podcast for you as we chat with the boys about how far they’ve come and where they’re going.  Learn more about your ad choices. Whiskey Business is thrilled to bring back THE PREMISE! Our live comedy/game show/podcast, where two comedic talents are handed a “premise“ the night of the show and then have 20 minutes to write 5 minutes of material which they will then perform. Also included in the evening is a guest comic, conversation and lots of unpredictable fun! At the end of the evening the audience will determine who “Nailed The Premise.” On this episode it’s Dan Sebree going up against Ian Miller in the Premise Competition and our guest comic is Mike Larsen. Enjoy and we’ll see you next time on THE PREMISE.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
While that may sound like something you would say while sitting on the front porch in the South, it was instead a tasting of some mighty fine whiskey from Ed Carey and Magnolia Spirits.  The former real estate developer, Ed took his love of the sweet, brown liquor and made it his own with currently three blended products which are smooth, rich in flavor and sure to please the most discriminate whiskey drinker.  We sampled a wheated bourbon, a rye and a barrel proof whiskey. Each seemingly as good as the other, though we all had a favorite.  Ed’s philosophy is simple. Bottle some good whiskey and share it with good friends. Mission accomplished on this week’s Whiskey Business.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Hard to believe it’s been a year already, but Whiskey Business had its Annual Oscar Podcast with George Wolf and Hope Madden from The Screening Room Podcast to determine who will Oscar gold.  While it seems that Everything, Everywhere looks like a slam dunk and may carry the night, the conversation did drift to some potential upsets and dug even deeper into what makes an Oscar nominated picture or performance a “winner.” No matter which way it goes on Oscar night THIS years annual podcast is definitely a lock, so check it out before you fill out those ballots for your Oscar party.  “And the winner is…Whiskey Business!” Eh…we can dream.  Learn more about your ad choices. James Hagerty, author of the new book, YOURS TRULY, A Guide To Writing Life Stories, joined Whiskey Business and left us with a lesson: you don’t have to be famous to leave your story behind.  Having written 900 plus obituaries for the Wall Street Journal, James takes his gift and shares the stories of how people lived rather than dwell on the loss of their departure from this world.  It made for an introspective night of questions, self awareness and the reminder that we only die once, but we “live” for much longer and how we lived is what people should remember.  YOURS TRULY was selected by the Washington Post as one of ten noteworthy books published last December and is available on Amazon.com Learn more about your ad choices. Like the plot of a classic Frank Capra movie, a frequent guest on Whiskey Business returned to the podcast with for a different reason.  Our friend, Bill Demora, aka The World’s Most Superstitious Buckeye Fan sat down with us this time as the now Honorable William P. Demora, Ohio Senator.  Find out how this all happened and while honored to have the elected position why our friend wants everyone to know “he’s still, Bill.” Referring to himself as “the accidental Senator” it’s a position he’s humbled to have and does not take lightly. His passion for the job is evident and the commitment is real. Don’t worry, he’s not leaving his beloved Buckeyes behind. But now Ohio State has a #1 fan in the Ohio Senate, and that passion for what happens on the field may now be channeled to the Senate floor as well.  Learn more about your ad choices.
