What you may ask is there to investigate after a suicide? The tragedy of the act is done. But there are questions and when it comes to the Who, the What, the Where and the WHY, Dallas Allen comes on the scene.     On a podcast full of compassion and compelling revelations, Whiskey Business spoke with Dallas about the aftermath of a situation; talking with the families, uncovering the reasons, and in some cases finding out that things are not always as they seem. It’s a fascinating hour with an exceptional and passionate-about-his-work-guest that offers insight, education and…hope.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Whiskey Business closed out the year with a great podcast from a funny, wise, inspiring and insightful comedian. Sumukh Torgalkar joined us to talk comedy, life, work, parents, relationships, and the holidays. In the mix was obviously humor, but also insight and perspective on all the above, dosed with laughter and even a little wisdom. As we close out another year, we wish you and yours the gift of peace and perspective in 2025 with hopes that the New Year brings us ALL what we may individually and together to make it year to remember. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Dino, Greg, John and Chip. Four not-so-wise men, but we try. This week on Whiskey Business it was just “the guys”as we realized 2024 brought “milestone” birthdays to each of us. Greg turned 40. Chip turned 60. John will be 60 in a few weeks and I turned (ahem) 65. The lively, funny and at times serious discussion ranged from where we’re at, where we’ve been and most importantly where are we going with the gas that’s still left in our life tanks. If you’ve got a big birthday coming or have had one, give a listen or watch and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! You’re not getting older, you’re getting better! Right? Right?! Whiskey Business has their annual Live Audience Halloween Podcast thanks to Echo Spirits in Grandview. Not only did the owners, Joe and Nikhil offer up a flight of Echo Spirits to taste, we also got a sneak 9 month peak of our own WHISKEY BUSINESS barrel which is still waiting to become bourbon. The night got more interesting when psychic, Cindy Riggs joined us. In addition to explaining what she does and how it works, she also demonstrated how remote viewing happens, where with just an address she could tell you if your home is “inhabited” by someone other than YOU. It was a fascinating night of revelations, and supernatural fun that you can enjoy this Halloween. If…you…dare. Go ahead. You’ll be fine. Compared to Clark Donley, we here at Whiskey Business are truly the amateurs as we sat across the veteran broadcaster, Clark Donley. 40 plus years in the business that started as a disc jockey, led to sportscasting on television and then 30 more years doing the news on radio, Clark has reported it all with compassion and class and off the mic became an early force in developing Ohio’s Amber Alert program as well. As he embarks on what I consider a faux retirement, Clark has entered the podcast world with OFF THE RECORD: An FBI Agent's Perspective, a podcast detailing the behind the scenes stories and cases of retired FBI agent, Harry Trombitas. It’s a podcast full of memories, some laughter and a look at how “the news” has changed over the decades. Two things happen this time of year on Whiskey Business. The Buckeyes start another season and to insure a winning one, Bill Demora (now Senator Demora) returns to his superstitious ways and returns to Whiskey Business. But this one is packed with more than just Buckeye Football. We caught Bill just after the Democratic Convention as well, and a lot of behind the scenes stories were revealed: the Biden Love, Back to Back Obama’s, The Beyoncé Bee Hive, and how much you could’ve scalped your ticket for on the last night of the convention. And yes, we did talk Buckeye Football before Billy lost his senatorial patience. So all will be well in Buckeye Nation as it is in this weeks episode of Whiskey Business. Go Bucks! Go Billy! Ahead of the first of Columbus Comedy Festival, we enjoy a respectable visit with comedian Nickey Winkelman. The conversation went from comedy to real life and the REAL life that’s in comedy. Asking, what's the art of finding ways to present life situations to a comedy crowd that may also be going through them but in a relatable, funny way? We also talked about the juggling of being a mom, doing comedy and holding down a regular job where she claims the title of “Respectable Co-worker.” Enjoy the ALWAYS respectable and ALWAYS funny, Nickey Winkelman on this latest edition of Whiskey Business Don't forget to subscribe to the Whiskey Business YouTube channel Catch Nickey and Dino at the 2024 Columbus Comedy Festival Celebrate Nickey's birthday at The Attic's Friday Night Fights Follow Nickey Winkelman: Nickey on Instagram Nickey on TikTok Thanks to Gatto's Pizza in Clintonville, Ohio! Pelotonia is a two-day bicycle ride in the Columbus, Ohio area, to raise funds for cancer research. Our guest, Preston Stapleton is riding in it.    Preston is not a cyclist by nature, but this will be his third time, putting 50 miles on the pavement and hopefully reaching his own personal fundraising goal. To sweeten the pot, he’s raffling off some very nice bottles of bourbon as well. We wish him good luck, safe cycling and hope you enjoy this latest installment of Whiskey Business. In 2021 80% of suicides in Ohio were men.  Enter MAN THERAPY, started in Colorado and adopted by Ohio in February of 2024, MAN THERAPY is a kind and yes-humorous way to approach men about therapy and feelings they never talk about because of stigmas, fears and opinions of others.  Tony Coder joined Whiskey Business for a frank and again- funny podcast about men and therapy.  MAN THERAPY with their faux psychiatrist, Dr. Rich Mahogany, helps men realize that’s “it’s ok to not be ok” and offers options on how to move forward.  It’s not clinical. It’s not medical. But it’s definitely helpful and a great tool for getting on path to better mental health. Listen to some frank and honest discussions, revelations and maybe even take the “head test” to see where you may be or where you can direct the man in your life you care about. And then you can buy him a beer.  Visit: https://mantherapy.org/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In September of 2022, filmmaker Peter Jon Ross joined us to talk about his documentary SOCIAL MEDIA MONSTER, a film about an internet troll who he’s battled for more than a decade. It was our most listened to and watched podcast on Whiskey Business. The documentary is now out and available to stream. Ross returned to Whiskey Business to update us on the film, the battle and other amazing things that have transpired since his last visit. The story was fascinating and compelling two years ago and still is in 2024. If you’ve ever been trolled, it’s almost required listening. If you haven’t…count your blessings and listen nonetheless. Getting "Down to the Felt"

Getting "Down to the Felt"

2024-05-2701:21:27

Whiskey Business came back from hiatus right around the same time the largest local independent film ever made in Columbus, DOWN TO THE FELT wrapped on principal photography. Coincidence? No. Our host for Whiskey Business was one of the writers and producers of the film and he along with Director/Writer/Producer Jon Osbeck and Writer/Producer Ralph Scott, sat on the guest side of the table as John Whitney, Greg Hansberry and Chip Kocel asked all the burning movie questions. The Down To The Felt story is a journey into independent filmmaking and still has the post production process to go through. But it IS a testament to what can be done in Columbus, Ohio with the right talents, the right crew and yeah…a little bit of luck and serendipity. Go “all in” and enjoy this return to Whiskey Business. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The tables are still turned on this installment of Whiskey Business as our host, Dino Tripodis, was the guest. The topic was a True Crime case he was instrumental in solving. A case of MURDER! No, he didn’t commit it, but he was an integral part in the pursuit of the people who did.  The Just Sweats Case was an insurance fraud for murder case that started in 1988 and ended in 1992 with John Hawkins, the alleged mastermind behind the whole plot being the last one apprehended and tried and convicted for conspiracy to commit murder. Attorney, Bill Mattes, is back to navigate it all, digging deep into the case. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

His partners, Melvin Hanson and Richard Boggs were apprehended and convicted FOR the murder of Ellis Greene prior to Hawkin’s capture.  And…they almost got away with it.  Interviewed by attorney, Bill Mattes, who left no stone unturned and in turn brought out ghosts that Dino had not confronted in decades, you need to listen or watch and find out the part our host played in initiating the hunt and the subsequent lessons learned that stick with him more than 35 years later. Another Oscar year is nearing but it wouldn’t be official for us here at Whiskey Business without our annual visit from George Wolf and Hope Madden from The Screening Room podcast.  There may appear to be some slam dunks if you’re in an Oscar pool, but I’m going to suggest you listen up/or watch to see if some upsets are predicted as well in our discussion of Oscar gold.  If you love the movies it’s one of our favorite podcasts of the year. And if you only saw BARBIE, this is your chance to get educated before Oscars are awarded on March 10, 2024.  That being said, I’d like to thank the podcast academy, my audio and video producers, my family who seldom listens… Learn more about your ad choices. Whiskey Business loves being the first kid on the block with something special and on this podcast we got the sneak peek of some NEW Irish Whiskeys from BUA which originates here in Columbus but is made with tender, Irish care in Ireland. What I called “fightin’ whiskey was a single grain but there were also some single malts that were finished in tawny port casks, ALL of them great including the BUA Original which has come a long way since we sampled Batch #1 a few years back.  Great whiskey coupled with great stories from Martin and Pat made for a great podcast that went “into the wee” hours of the evening and probably could gone on even more. Enjoy this batch of podcasting with a good pour, but if I were you…I’d bring the whole bottle. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
A “lobbyist” is NOT a strange person who hangs out in hotel lobbies. Got it.  They are however, the behind the scenes movers and shakers of influence; be it political, business related or other miscellaneous agendas.  Steve Dimon has been a lobbyist for 30 plus years and gave us an inside look into the job that some deem as evil while others consider it a needed ally for success. What are YOUR perceptions? Validate them or be surprised at how this world really works on this latest edition of WHISKEY BUSINESS.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It’s easy to see why we think Dan is "The Man" on this particular podcast because our good friend, Dan Swarthout has worn many hats over the course of his life: lawyer, comedian, Mayor of Powell, Ohio, 18+ years of comedically prepping a crowd before the start of Ohio Lottery’s Cash Explosion TV show (taking a breath here) “early” podcast pioneer, and TV historian! The show could’ve been, in length, about any of the above, but we tried to cover them all and in the process went down some delightful rabbit holes that will surprise and please. Whiskey Business kicked off the New Year with a new bourbon and a fairly new distillery to usher in 2024.  Leather and Oak Spirits founded in 2019 out of Hilliard, Ohio joined the podcast as Steve Lambert and Dave Sheppard shared their journey with not only a fine bourbon but also a nice limoncello that the boys crank out with love and care.  The bourbon was about as old school as you could get. 100% corn. The limoncello was about as old country as you could get as they eventually got the recipe from a lovely Italian woman who finally caved and allowed Steve and Dave to share it with the world.  It’s a fun chat about the love of whiskey and more importantly the time and care that goes into making a good one.
