Charlie Plumb always wanted to fly planes. As a little boy growing up on a farm in Kansas, he wasn't sure how he would be able to. The United States Naval Academy provided him with the opportunity. He reported to Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego where he flew the first adversarial flights in the development of what would be called The Navy Fighter Weapons School, currently known as “TOP GUN.” The next year, Plumb’s squadron the Aardvarks launched on the Aircraft Carrier USS Kitty Hawk with Fighter Squadron 114 to fly the Navy’s hottest airplane, the F-4 Phantom Jet. Code named “Plumber,” Charlie Plumb flew 74 successful combat missions over North Vietnam and made over 100 carrier landings.On his 75th mission, just five days before the end of his tour, Plumb was shot down over Hanoi, taken prisoner, tortured, and spent the next 2,103 days in North Vietnamese Prisoner of War camps. He served for 31 years in the Navy he now shares his story with many different groups. His story reminds us that no matter what we are going through we can overcome it. No matter our circumstances we must never quit.

Bae Bloeser as a minister's daughter had seen her father help people all her life and went to several countries to help people. She dreamed of going to Africa when she was 10 years old. She got her to wish when she followed her husband to help eradicate smallpox in Nigeria during a civil war. She had two small children who moved to Africa with them. Her son was 4 years old and her daughter was 18 months. She witnessed many atrocities and suffered traumas from soldiers going through her things with bayonets among other incidents. Then she went to Equatorial Guinea which was under the rule of a horrible dictator who committed terrible atrocities. She stayed because her husband's mission to fight smallpox was so important. She has since written a book about her experience Vaccines & Bayonets: Fighting Smallpox in Africa amid Tribalism, Terror and the Cold War. She reminds us how important it is to do what we can to help others. We all can use our skills, or time to help others in some way.
Michelle Keui faced a major brick as a child she was hit by a taxi which caused her to have to go through several surgeries. They did not work and Michelle had to use crutches to get around her growth was stunted at 4 feet. This brought a lot of challenges with it and affected her self-esteem. She had a hard time finding her place in the world. Another brick came when her family moved from Taiwan to New York she had to learn English and get used to a new culture. Despite all that, she obtained her pharmacy degree and has a successful career but felt she was missing out on life. in 2014, Joshua was a prominent magazine publisher, award-winning journalist, film festival founder, and politician in central Maine. He had a secret he was suffering from addiction to alcohol and porn. His job and family were suffering he finally admitted he had a problem and went to rehab. At the time he didn't realize he had an addiction to porn and how much it was affecting his life. He looked for literature on porn addiction and could not find a lot written on it and has written a few books about it, has a coaching business, and is a TED speaker. Barbara Legeere faced one of the greatest tragedies any parent can go through the loss of a child. After a long of battle with drug addiction, he ended his life. After falling into the wrong crowd in high school who introduced him to drugs and then he was introduced to harder drugs like heroin. Barbara tried to help him as much as possible through many rehab programs but nothing helped. After he died she had to deal with her grief and the feeling that she could have done more but she did her best. She wrote a book to help other parents going through the same journey. Her story is unfortunately not unique but reminds us even though it never ends we can find purpose through grief and help others.

All that success was masking her addiction to alcohol, addiction to fame, and trouble with relationships, which hid the trauma and neglect she experienced as a child.
