Originally Recorded: December 10, 2020Doulas are so empowering that we wanted to devote an entire episode to them! You might have heard about doulas but not many people know about what a doula REALLY does, what supports they provide, and just how significant they can be for not only your pre and post partum experience, but as a way to set you up for parenthood with a whole lot of nourishing. In this episode, we’ll hear from two amazing souls, two doulas supporting families prenatally all the way to postpartum. First up, we’ll hear from Kelly from the Trillium Learning Center and Homegrown Families about what a doula does. Next, we’ll be connecting with Nikita, who started Sistas Caring 4 Sistas, which is an incredible non-profit organization, it is a community-based doula program founded by women of color for women of color who could benefit from this evidence-based form of birth support. Our doulas are part of a larger social justice movement, working in partnership with MAHEC and Mothering Asheville, that is committed to eliminating health disparities for mothers and infants. So what is a doula? Instead of us telling you, let’s hear it from the experts. Originally Recorded: December 3, 2020Kate’s first child was born healthy and followed all the usual stages of a child’s development, so her first phase of parenthood was more like a hippie mom, she didn’t care about milestones, her daughter walked when she wanted to walk and nursed when she wanted to nurse. A few years later her son was born and things were different this time around. The most handsome and sunshiney and joyful child was born, but also, he wasn’t hitting any milestones and at 3mo the doctors began to worry. As they moved through the journey of diagnosis, doctors and discovery, Kate’s parenting and approach began to change. But don’t take it from us, let’s listen to Kate and her story and hear about her incredible parenting journey as the mother of two very different kids with very different needs.Wholehearted Parent CoachingThe Joyous Parent

"The plague of racism is insidious, entering in our minds as smoothly and quietly and invisibly as floating airborne microbes enter into our bodies to find lifelong purchase in our bloodstreams." -Maya AngelouOr as a fellow peaceful protester's sign read the other day, "Racism is also a pandemic."When we avoid talking to our (white) children about race, we perpetuate this ongoing plague. They will then grow up ill-equipped to handle it when they do confront, witness, and participate in injustice in their lives. If you would like to learn more about our coaching and programs, you can visit us at:Rachel Maietta: Wholehearted Parent CoachingSivanne Lieber: The Joyous ParentEnjoy!
