Life after lockdown ... We're all living through it but are we actually LIVING? today we discuss how it feels being back to work and back to 'normal' eventhough there's nothing normal about it !
Where did the year go? I can’t believe this is my final episode of 2024! In this episode, I take some time to reflect on what I’ve learned this year – and hopefully, it might help some of you too.
At the start of the year, my whole world was turned upside down when my relationship ended.
I was already in a tough place mentally, and to be honest, I thought it might tip me over the edge.
But in the middle of it all, I was forced to change how I approached things – and now, looking back, I’m truly grateful for it.
In this episode, I share:
How starting therapy helped me learn to process my emotions instead of pushing them down.
The value of enjoying my own company and learning not to cling to friendships or people out of fear of being alone.
How joining a rugby team pushed me way out of my comfort zone, both physically and socially – something I never would have done if life had stayed the same.
The importance of accepting the natural ups and downs of emotions instead of fighting against them, and how asking why I feel a certain way has been a game-changer.
This year taught me so much about myself, and while it wasn’t easy, I’m coming out of it stronger and more hopeful for 2025. If you’re struggling right now, I hope this episode helps you feel a little less alone.
Thanks so much for listening and for being here with me throughout 2024 – I’m excited to see where next year takes us.
Here’s to more growth, more lessons, and more looking after ourselves in 2025.
Happy New Year! 🎉

Is there something that you just can't get right with your horse?
Today I speak to Emma McCauley owner of Sparrow Equestrian also a bit of an equine encyclopedia
We speak about how she was always involved with horses despite not being from a horsey background
Deciding to make the jump from a corporate "safe" job to follow her dream of working with horses full-time
The importance of people around you giving you unwavering support during the tough times
We discuss how she works with clients from assessing all areas from rider to horse
The training scale and how each part of it can affect the horse's movement
That horses do not plot against us and they aren't out to get you, if something is wrong it's not because they are being deliberately bold
The importance of taking videos to be able to see the progress that you've made
That most horses don't need high-percentage feeds and this can cause more issues than good
The prevalence of quick fixes and that equestrians need to be patient and go back to basics before just buying training aids as they are often misused
Flatwork is the foundation and more emphasis needs to be put on that over jumping
That we need to accept that perfection is not possible with horses and we need to stop putting so much pressure on ourselves and the horses and enjoy our time with them
Emma also lets us know what she has coming up this year including some riding club clinics in Emerald Equestrian and lots more exciting things so keep an eye on her page
Emma has some great advice at the end of the podcast including not being afraid to ask for help

So it's the time of year when we are going to see all those LBD or Xmas party-ready workouts advertised everywhere...
That's why I decided that it was a good time to remind everyone the reasons why strength training is important for women that don't include weightloss
I talk about how it helps improve bone density
More muscle = more food
How having more muscle can also protect joints from impact and injury
That it just makes day to day life easier
How staying active makes you more independent in later life
And one of the most important ones.. it's great for your mental health!
I also say that when it comes to exercise it's important to find something that you enjoy and that all gyms aren't the same so if you need any help with finding something that suits you feel free to drop me a DM

It can be easy to feel like you are going nowhere but do you ever look back on how far you've come?
In the last episode before the summer I'm going to talk all about this
This was inspired by a recent weekend I spent at a competition doing media work which made me think back to when I graduated college and thought media wasn't for me because I hated putting myself in front of people
It's taken 10 years of growth to bring myself to this point and that's why it's important to look back
It's not a linear process and there are knockbacks
Being aware of negative self-talk and catching yourself in it
Learning how to hack the system instead of using excuses to avoid pushing yourself
But also be aware that if you're not enjoying something it's ok to take a break or stop completely
But most importantly remember that you will always be a work in progress and that's ok, the worst thing you can do is stay the same
I will be back with new episodes in September but don't worry I will be sharing previous episodes "from the vault" all through the summer so there will be some great eps to listen to!

Have you considered starting some form of resistence training but think you are just too old? Well I'm here to explain to you how that is not the case
As we age we are more prone to things like sarcopenia (degeneration of muscle) and osteoperosis/osteapenia (brittle bones) and you can help manage these condtions with resistance training
Building some muscle can help support arthritus, joint replacements and other pain (excluding nerve damage)
Pain killers are not the answer in most situations
Massage and stretching are just as temporary as painkillers
if you don't use it you lose it
The importance of being able to get up without using your hands
Our clients experience and how resistence training has changed so much for her quality of life
You don't need to be a body builder to make a change
You don't even need a gym to do it
Having structure to a how you train can help you stick to it so if you have joined multiple gyms over the years but never stuck to it, try working with a coach or joining a class

We are all looking for that ONE thing that will help you achieve the fat loss you are chasing for good... there are ads all over the internet selling you different ways to do it
Spoiler alert they are all bulls**t and just people looking to take your money...
The bad news is that the name of this podcast is Clickbaity there is no one way to lose weight for good but there are lots of things we can change to help this
Firstly stop falling for these extreme transformations/detoxes they do not work..If they worked you wouldn't have to do them again
Just because you were a certain weight before doesn't mean it was healthy for you... I was once 46kg and at the time thought I was finally "skinny" but really was going through a really tough time and incredibly unhealthy
Stop treating exercise as a means to lose weight sometimes it's just you time or a break from everything else
The importance of finding the right gym or trainer/coach for you, maybe a small semi-private gym will be better for you than the big super gyms out there do some research on different places before joining
You don't have to do gym-based training find something that works for you and that you don't dread going to
The internet make fat loss seem very difficult and it's not as hard as you think but it's also not as easy as you think
Don't be afraid to try something new and join a club to get involved

I've found it funny as a horse rider that it's not been the crazy falls that have resulted in an injury it's the most innocuous things that have caused them
This was the inspiration behind an article I wrote for The Grassroots Gazette
https://thegrassrootsgazette.ie/why-do-the-silliest-things-seem-to-cause-the-worst-injuries/
So here are the 4 reasons that can cause these injuries
1. Sheer bad luck
2. Putting strain on a weakness that you may or may not already know about
3. Ignoring/ previous injury
4. Ageing
I expand on each of these in the podcast and in the article but also explain how you can put yourself in the best position possible so that these things do not lead to injury (except no.1 cos it's very hard to control that at all)
So if you feel like you've been struggling with an injury or something that hasn't quite healed, maybe it's time to look into working with a physical therapist or coach to finally get some relief.

Injuries... they are so fun aren't they?
Today I wanted to talk about injuries and their relationship to training
Disclaimer: This is not for anyone with nerve or spinal injuries and If you have been carrying an injury make sure you contact a professional before taking up any form of exercise programme
I talk about the different types of injuries, what can cause them and how training can prevent them
How stress can affect us as it is stress awareness month
How having an injury doesn't necessarily mean you have to stop exercising altogether
If you've had an injury for a while go see a physio or a physical therapist and do the damn exercises
I just wanted to remind people that you don't need to live in pain all the time, get your injury seen to and you will feel so much better. You won't regret it!

Hands up if you struggle with motivation when it comes to training!
While it's completely normal to go through phases where you are more "motivated" to work out, it's entirely different if you're someone who goes to the gym for a month and then disappears for 3 then goes again for a month and disappears for two.
That's why today I wanted to speak about reasons that you may be doing this.
I speak about going to the gym because you think that you should rather than because you want to
Not getting the results you want can be because you aren't doing the right training for what you are looking for
Sometimes life gets in the way and sometimes you actually need that time away from training to prioritise other things
Not knowing why you are doing it, it's very hard to do something if you don't feel like you have a reason to, finding that reason could be the thing that keeps you consistent
And a big one that I find
Not having a plan
If you can find the answers to these problems you will find it a lot easier to stick to the training, remain consistent with it instead of jumping in and out every few months and finally get the results that you've always wanted

Ok so it's nearing the end of February which is when all the regular gym goers breathe a sigh of relief as the "new year new me" people start to disappear slowly
But if you are one of those people before you give up maybe you should listen to this episode
Today I look at the things that you should do before you give up again
How you should reassess your goal and whether or not it is attainable
That if you are feeling really run down, maybe you just need a rest and to try to do less
Maybe you've gone the opposite way and you've tried to do too much but just don't have the time
Or you just need a new programme to keep things fresh
I also speak about how having a coach can make a massive difference to your training, not just saving time by doing your plan but also as a support system for when you are having a bad run of things
It can be any coach but If you are interested in looking to work with me you can find me :

If you're in the Equine world you may have heard about the HAY campaign (if you haven't you're probably living under a rock)
HAY stands for " How are ya" and it is a mental health awareness campaign aimed at those in the equestrian and agriculture
How an incident on the 27th of December had him feeling really low and just needed someone to talk to which is where the idea for HAY was born
During this time, he found that 80% of jockeys in a survey said they had suffered from a mental health disorder, and what's more, there are no statistics for other equestrian disciplines, so he knew he had to do something
While he was always great at listening to other people he never actually opened up himself for a long time which really took a toll on his mental health which nearly pushed him to breaking point
We also talk about how horses are not just commodities to people who work with them and it can be very upsetting to have people talk about it in a negative manner
How Equestrians always put their horses ahead of themselves and this is why they can suffer so much with their mental health
The surreal feeling of seeing not only every equestrian governing body, some of his heroes get behind the campaign but also getting a race sponsored at Fairyhouse
We finish talking about what is next for HAY to keep the momentum going like getting the agricultural industry involved more so on when January hits next year they can make an even bigger impact
Remember, if you are feeling down and need someone to talk to or if you are worried about someone please do not hesitate to reach out.
Sometimes the biggest impacts can be made from a simple "Hey, how are ya?"

Ok yes I know veganuary is over however if it is something you took part in, or something you considered doing in general listening to this ep will do you no harm
I myself have been eating a vegetarian diet (soz vegans I'm not giving up cheese or eggs) since the start of January so I wanted to share some of the things that have helped me keep on top of my nutrition
I talk about how your body will take some time to adjust if you go straight into it (extra fibre is fun)
How Planning meals can really help you get the most out of what you eat
That mixing different sources of protein is needed
That it should not be used as a weight loss quick fix
Supplements you will need to take if you are eating a vegan diet, in particular, Vitamin B
If this is something that you considered trying I would suggest that you do some research into it beforehand to make sure that you can get the most out of your nutrition!

Look I know that you have heard the health benefits of exercise many times through the years
And it still wasn't enough to keep you going with it
With the January gym influx upon us, I wanted to talk about some of the other benefits that you may not always think of when it comes to exercise
I talk about grounding and how being out in fresh air can bring us back to reality (especially when you live in Ireland cos that air is FRESH this time fo the year)
How joining a gym class, sports team or even walking group can be a great way of socialising and finding people with common interests to you
That achieving things that you never thought possible is a great way to grow your confidence
And that doing hard things makes other hard things easier to tackle
I also wanted to emphasise that exercise comes in many forms and the importance of knowing why you are doing it
Most importantly picking something that you enjoy and can take at your own pace makes you far more likely to stick to it!

With Christmas coming we all see a drop off from the gym and training so we decided to have a chat about what we have seen
We talk about FOMO keeps changing people's priorities when it comes to spending
That nights out give us the instant gratification that we want which is ok
That you will equally find people on both sides of the coin those who find it hard to let go of their training schedule and those who are on the opposite side who need to go out a little less
Learning to sit with your feelings is the best way to find out why you actually train and that the goal you think you have is rarely the goal you actually want
That you don't need to train every day even going twice a week is 100 times a year
We often will not actually learn the basics and then wonder why we aren't progressing
You don't need to work out to make up for living your life
It's ok to take a week off but you don't need to plan them into your programme
That you can take it handy and enjoy your xmas just keep a lil bit active with the likes of walking or doing the bare minimum the main thing is just to enjoy yourself and don't feel guilty for it!

When you think about improving your fitness and strength for horse riding, what comes to mind?
Maybe you are thinking "That's just for competitive riders, I'm just a happy hacker so I wouldn't need that"
Well today with this episode I want to explain to you how it can be beneficial for any type of rider.
I talk about how strong you are can be the difference in whether you stay on the horse or not if they spook
How it can make carrying things around the yard much easier
How building muscle can help prevent injury
If you feel stronger you'll feel more confident and in control
That building up areas where you may have been injured is the best way to rehab it
And most importantly this can all be done at home with basic equipment and sometimes you don't even need any equipment at all

We hear the word motivation thrown around a lot when it comes to fitness but what really gets you to where you want to be is consistency, and that's not just fitness. Anyone who is a master in their field be it fitness or business or whatever else has one thing in common. They consistently show up for themselves.
Today in a solo ep I talk all about the importance of consistency
I talk about how your health isn't a 6 or 8-week programme
Exercising for your health doesn't necessarily mean losing weight
How shiny object syndrome is stopping you from reaching your goal instead of finding something you enjoy cos it's not "the best thing for fat loss"
You shouldn't be afraid to take up old hobbies
Sometimes life gets in the way which is fine it doesn't mean you stop
Sometimes you have to miss a Monday
If someone on social media makes you feel bad don't be afraid to unfollow them they don't care about you so don't let them make you feel bad
The little things add up and you have to be ready to work on them for a long time until it becomes part of your life
You'll always have people telling you to do things differently but don't take advice from someone that you wouldn't switch places with
If you have a coach listen to them you are paying them so you should be able to ask them any questions you may have
Even though I spoke about fitness this can be applied to anything in our lives and although I do not struggle with it when it comes to training, it's definitely something that comes up in other areas of my life!

Have you always struggled with weight loss have you considered how your relationship with food could be affecting that?
Today I talk to Claire Feldman, Claire is a psychotherapist who works with people who are looking to break the cycle of disordered eating and mend their relationship with food.
We talk about her own story and how she came to work in this area.
Hoe you can't look for weight loss and fix your disordered eating at the same time so you have to be willing to let that go in order to heal
How people often romanticise a certain weight and want to be that weight again but often don't remember how they got there
Building structure through balanced meals without prescribing a meal plan
How eating disorders can take up so much of someone's life and having empathy and compassion for themselves can help them move away from these behaviours
People often think that it's their lack of control over food and its often not that simple
That when it comes to before and after transformation shots but you never see a 6 month after shot
There's been a rise in eating disorders since the pandemic, specifically in college students
How over-exercise can be a sign of disordered eating
That our childhood experiences can affect how we see exercise but finding a way of moving your body that you enjoy is so important
If you are thinking that you may have some disordered eating habits get curious about where it is coming from and consider do you need to remove those influences from your life
Don't be afraid to reach out for help if this is something that you are struggling with disordered eating, there is a lot of shame associated with it but there is no shame in having an eating disorder.

Do you hate the gym?
Or is it ALL exercise you hate?
Did you ever think this might be because you only see it as a punishment and a way to lose weight?
Today I talk to Esme Prior a PT in the UK all about this very topic
We talk about training for performance vs training for aesthetics and how this way of training is all about being more not less
Helping move clients into that head space instead of the traditional "train to lose weight"
About her own journey into fitness
How hard people are on themselves when often they didn't fail the programme failed them
How social media can be great but can also be the cause of so many issues in the industry
What is considered the best body type will change so you can never truly be happy when chasing a certain look
Your learning as a PT only really begins when you start working on the gym floor
You don't have to run if you don't actually like it and changing your training plan to something you enjoy is not a failure
And always wear straps for RDLS

If you didn't manage to join us on the "How strength training helps your riding" Masterclass, good news! I didn't want anyone to miss out so I've decided that I will share the audio from the master class as a BONUS podcast episode!
What we covered in this webinar is how you utilise strength training and really make a difference to not only your horse riding but your life outside of riding too. Which is what you can achieve working with me on my Strong in the Saddle programme.
I've designed this for you if you're an equestrian who:
Is frustrated that your horse won't listen to you when in hand or in the saddle - and you feel like you are constantly arguing with your horse instead of working together.
Feels unbalanced and lacking in confidence when riding, making you nervous and likely to tense up when your horse spooks (or even just looks at something funny).
Can’t seem to shift that niggly shoulder/hip/knee injury, it doesn’t just bother you while riding now; the thought of bending over to grab something really makes you cringe.
Doing this work with me, my aim for you is that you walk away:
You and your horse CAN work together as a partnership, no longer fighting with them every step of the way, finally seeing those dressage scores improve, and feeling like they ACTUALLY want to work with you.
You CAN feel more in control and not worry that you will stay on in 9/10 situations, You won’t feel as tense in new places where your horse is looking at everything, Won’t feel nervous to get up when you know they may be a little bit fresh. You’ll finally feel like you understand the saying “superglued to the saddle”
You CAN get rid of that niggle once and for all, no more heat packs, no more foam rolling, no more painkillers before riding, you will instead feel more mobile and be able to focus on what you are doing instead of worrying that you will put out your shoulder/knee/hip again
