Today we talk about another legend in American folklore and try to find the truth and origins behind these larger-than-life tales. On this EP, we are looking into the steel-driving man John Henry. Apart from his folklore fellows, John Henry seems to have been birthed from old songs sung by railroad workers in the late 19th century... but was the subject of their songs, John Henry, an actual person? Quite possibly. Listen to find out more! Come and Join Chance and me as we go through the stories and tales of Paul Bunyan and his larger-than-life legends. As we sift through the information to find the truth behind the legends, we are sipping through some of Whiskey's greatest legends too. Enjoy the banter and booze, and let us know if you think Paul was FACT or FICTION. Cheers --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/why-whiskey/support

In this episode, I am joined by my wonderful friend and fellow history nerd Alycia as we kick off the American Legend Series. A series of shows dedicated to looking into American Legends and seeing if we can find enough evidence to give the big red FACT stamp OR... send back to the story books with the Fiction stamp.  Molly Pitcher was the name given to multiple women throughout the Revolutionary War. We are focusing on the two most prominent characters who may have earned this title. Both women found themselves on the battlefield, both saw their husbands go down, and both took up their spouse's positions and started fighting back. Join us for that story and more! CORRECTION: In the EP I state that I was in the room when the first women infantry officers were "commissioned" - that is not true. I was in the room when they were "branched" or selected to serve as Infantry officers. I did not edit or remove that statement for transparency. Thank you.  Sources: https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn00065127/1896-07-03/ed-2/seq-6/#date1=1777&index=7&rows=20&words=Corbin+Margaret&searchType=basic&sequence=0&state=&date2=1963&proxtext=margaret+corbin&y=0&x=0&dateFilterType=yearRange&page=1 Margaret Corbin - https://wams.nyhistory.org/settler-colonialism-and-revolution/the-american-revolution/margaret-corbin/#:~:text=On%20July%206%2C%201779%2C%20Congress,what%20a%20man%20would%20receive. From dangerous trips through the catacombs in Italy to epic battles with the Black Knight to fighting Nazis in the deserts of Egypt to riding fake horses powered by coconuts that may or may not have migrated... the stories around the cup that Christ used at the Last Supper OORRR the cup that Joseph of Aramathea used to catch Christ's blood at the cross as he died, have brought about such grand tales, adventures, myths, legends, and some great movies! But is it real? Did it exist? Can it still be found? Or has it already been found and kept safe in a church in Spain... Let's grab some whiskey and "RRRRUUNNN AAAWWWAAAYYY" to see what we can find! Greetings friends! In this episode, I sit down and chat about our new backyard and the latest location of the #BOQLC. Battle Creek Michigan has a fun story to tell from the origin of its name to the crowning of its title of "Cereal City USA". The town served as a health and wellness and also concealed a stop along the Underground Railroad. Come with me as I sip some local whiskies and talk about this quaint little city with a big story. "Well behaved women seldom make history" Laurel Thatcher  The theme above can be heard throughout the conversation in this episode. I got the chance to sit down with one of my favorite history podcast hosts, Alycia from Civis and Coffee, and discuss a woman who immigrated to the US and took up the fight for her fellow immigrant women in the textile industry. Welcome back, nerds. Today we will focus all of our attention and energy on jumping from airplanes and not dying. The item that will make that a reality was invented a very long time ago on distant shores. Although the war against gravity has yet to be won, parachutes do help to slow down the gruesome effects that can come from that weird pull to earth. I am joined by skydiver, history dude, and former Marine (yea I know, this show cost me like four boxes of crayons) to talk about the history of parachutes, the history of skydiving, and the folks who work hard to keep us safe at the USPA. We are back Nerds!! Sorry for the break, I was not in any headspace to record. However, that is in the rearview and I am coming at you with a great conversation with a very special guest. 1SG(R) Justin Crawford spent over 20 years serving the nation in the Army. 15 of those years were spent as a soldier in the elite units of Special Forces. During our chat Justin and I will talk about the history of Special Forces, the process to become one, and if Hollywood gets it right when depicting these soldiers. This is a long one... so grab some drinks, buckle in and enjoy my conversation with a warrior and American Hero. Cheers. On this episode of Why Whiskey I am solo and drinking scotch! I also take a break from the booze to talk about the War of 1812 or the second war with England. I discuss what caused it, where it happened, how it happened, and who won... if there was a winner. This war was the conflict that saw the US get invaded and our nation's Capitol burned to the ground. It also inspired the writing of our national anthem. On this EP of Why Whiskey, I am solo and talking about the National Anthem of the United States of America. Written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, while on a British naval vessel, Key would witness the bombing of Fort McHenry and the beautiful flag that was waving over the fort despite the incredible firepower that was raining down on it. Since that time, the poem turned song had a bumpy ride through the country until being accepted officially as the National Anthem in 1931. BUCKLE IN FOLKS! THIS IS A LONG ONE! On this episode of Why Whiskey I am joined by my local tin hat manufacturer Jesse as we explore another government conspiracy. This one is much more fact than conspiracy though and reads like a science fiction novel. In the last days of World War II, the US and its allies made drastic moves to locate and secure German Tech, science, and the scientists responsible. The Cold War warm-up was happening and the US was 20 years behind the curve. The Project called Overcast would evolve into OP Paperclip and would lead to the hiring of Nazi scientists for government programs. In a story with so many twists and turns, we are drinking some strong booze this evening. Weller Full Proof, Nikka from the Barrel, and Lismore are on the menu. Come join us!!
