Description

We’ll be looking at instances of god in film as attempts to explain, understand, and give meaning to ourselves and our world.
We believe the world would be a better place without religion. Our ultimate goal is not to prove or disprove the existence of god or the necessity of religion; our hope is to open up discussions and help point people towards things they may have never considered. We can’t tell you to get out or how you get out from under religion, but we’re going tell you how we got out, and share the thoughts and shifts in perspective that helped get us there.

This week we are nerding out over one of our favorite book series of all time, Dune! We watched David Lynch's 1984 version and whined about liberties taken in the abandonment of the sacred text. We discuss the evils religious institutions convince their faithful to commit, why is circumcision, and conveniently self-fulfilled prophecies. We are so so sorry for the sound quality in this episode! We are working on our skills. I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm doing the best I can, thank you for your patience! The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption

2021-04-2001:11:37

In this episode, we discuss the horror of industrialized prisons, legalized slavery, the failure of the war on drugs, the importance of hope, as well as the hypocrisy and abuse of faith within religious institutions. There is A LOT of superfluous background noise in this episode, and for that we are extremely sorry. Our humble editing skills are not up to the task; however, we promise to do better in the future.
This week after our hero sustains a massive head trauma, we follow him and his fever dream out of the comforting depths of Midian and back into the stinking "civilized" bowels of Memphis. We disavow the indoctrination of children, and charge the god of the bible with using evil to glorify himself. Other books to read instead of the bible: Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera Anything by Anne Rice

Today's episode features our very first guest host, local Orlando tattoo artist, Mitchell! Check out his work at @handspuntattoos and www.handspuntattoos.com. We had so much fun talking about this movie that it couldn't be contained in one episode. On Part 1 we discuss the pitiless, vengeful, little man that is the god of the old testament, racist casting decisions, and the inherent YUCK of missionary work. Tune in next week for the stunning conclusion!
