Description

If you are (or aspire to be!) a woman on a mission, this is the podcast for you – especially if you’re feeling stuck or held back by unhelpful thinking. There are so many things that can stop us from stepping into the unknown, fulfilling our calling or reaching our full potential, and they nearly all begin with one thing. Our thoughts! Those pesky, slippery but convincing thoughts that I hear all the time from clients, like but I’m just little old me and who am I to do that?

Join me, Sue Revell, personal leadership coach and your host for these beautifully human conversations with world changing women. Women who have learned how to navigate their own resistance so that they can be in flow and make the world a better place. I’ll be alternating guest episodes, where I talk to the woman behind the mission, with shorter and reflective pods where I look back on the interview to make sure that you and I, together, squeeze out every drop of learning.

If you're on a mission to change the world, chances are it's something you feel compelled to do... but that doesn't make it easy! And often, we're so busy working out what we need to do that we forget to think about who we need to BE to create the change we want to see.  I'm your host, Sue Revell, inside-out leadership coach and creator of the I Gotta Be Me Experience. Together, we'll be learning from women who know that their mission is their calling. Their life. Their legacy.  On alternative weeks I will be talking to guests in an interview episode, and the following week I'll be sharing what I noticed and learned from each conversation. So whether you're a fan of conversational or summary episodes, there will be something for everyone!  43EirJSl1EW8TIqFXnCj
When did someone last say something that ‘split the universe’ for you? Alison Jones shares the moment that everything changed for her, compelling her to stop waiting for permission from other people and step up to be all that she can be. What if you were to put out your own bunting, start your own countdown clock and flick the switch that turns the amber light to green? It’s time to stop waiting for permission. This solo minisode reflects on some of the lessons from Alison Jones (Episode 01) and, in particular, the importance of consistency and creating great habits to keep us moving forward in our mission.
This is a very special episode in our launch season because it’s been recorded to coincide with Quest 79 day (2021). As if Paralympian Dr Karen’s Darke’s achievements weren’t already inspiring enough, she is also the founder of the Quest 79 inspirational challenge, which is all about inspiring us to find our inner gold and, in doing so, change the world. Karen is a Guinness World Record holder for landspeed by armpower, has skied across icecaps, kayaked at extreme latitudes of the planet, and hand-cycled across the world’s biggest mountain ranges and alongside some of the longest rivers. Seriously, stop reading. Just listen.   ABOUT MY GUEST: DR KAREN DARKE MBE Karen could be described as a modern-day ‘Alchemist’: a learning & development specialist turned mindset- heartset coach, explorer, athlete, speaker and author, Karen’s purpose is about helping individuals and organisations ‘Find Inner Gold’: turning challenge into opportunity, turning ‘mud’ into ‘gold’. Karen started out as a geologist researching gold in the Bolivian Andes, but a life-changing accident that left her paralysed led her away from being a ‘rock-doctor’ to winning Paralympic gold in the sport of Paralympic hand-cycling in Rio 2016.  It was the 79th medal for Britain, and 79 being the elemental number for Gold led to Karen creating Quest 79. The project has Karen cycling 7 continents in 9 iconic rides, raising £79K for Spinal Injuries and encouraging many people to step out of their comfort zones and discover passion, purpose, strength and other aspects of their ‘inner gold’.  She is a Guinness World Record holder for landspeed by armpower, has skied across icecaps, kayaked at extreme latitudes of the planet, and hand-cycled across the world’s biggest mountain ranges and alongside some of the longest rivers. These experiences combined with unique studies of mind, resilience and performance have led to helping people view life as an adventure, and to embrace all its’ experiences as opportunities to learn and grow. Karen has extensively studied what goes on ‘inside’:  the power of the mind and language to positively impact emotions; improving presence, performance and wellbeing. If we only focus on what we need to do, we hone down on measurables like goals and tasks and outcomes.  When we focus on who we need to BE, we catch the vision of our limitless potential… our true inner gold. This solo minisode reflects on some of the lessons from Dr Karen Darke (Episode 03) and, in particular, explores how much more we learn about ourselves when we focus on the journey rather than the destination.

Sometimes our mission isn’t as hard as we choose to make it. What if that thing you feel called or compelled to do is already out there and your job is simply to bring it to life in the way that only you can do? This solo minisode reflects on some of the lessons from my conversation with Julie Owen Moylan (Episode 05) and explores the meaning of mission, the importance of owning who we are, and how we can make it easier to fulfil our calling than we might imagine.
In a world where people often listen to speak, this episode demonstrates how much more there is to learn when we listen to understand… and not just to each other. Allison Crow models what it means to really listen to ourselves too and shares her own story of how life changes when we place our focus on being more instead of always doing more.  Based in Texas, Allison is a Life & Self-Leadership coach for authentic and ambitious women. She helps her clients compassionately work with emotions, thoughts, and behaviours that are a natural but often bypassed part of our human selves. Allison specialises in deep inner work, accessing self & intuition, followed up with courageous and creative inspired action. ABOUT MY GUEST: ALLISON CROW Allison Crow, M.Ed, is a Life and Self-Leadership coach for authentic and ambitious women. She has been teaching, speaking, and coaching in one form or another since the mid-90s. For years, she was a hard-lined performance and sales coach motivated by outside forces and an excruciating need for approval. Now, instead of being driven by hard goals and lifeless quotas at all costs, Allison has an unconventional and connected practice where delicious and thought-provoking conversations are more centered around meeting yourself deeply to establish a greater sense of self-trust - something that even the most successful of women are not feeling enough of. She helps her clients compassionately work with emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that are a natural but often bypassed part of our human selves. Allison's global clientele consists of soul-centered, high achievers - and often “recovering over-achievers.” They are small business owners, leaders, coaches, entrepreneurs, authors, bold artists, and even a few executives who are feeling the rub of doing life the way they were told they SHOULD... and who are ready to explore remembering who they were before they got lost - and living a created life instead of a life of obligation and constriction. Allison helps her clients overcome fears, increase their satisfaction in life and work, navigate big changes, earn more money, and cultivate fully expressed and successful life and work. Teaching, speaking, or coaching, Allison is always sure to toss in a bit of humor, and can't help but bring her professional consultant-self to the table, but ultimately, she specializes in deep inner work, accessing self & intuition, followed up with courageous and creative inspired action. The dance between ego and learning can leave us feeling highly vulnerable when it comes to sharing who we are and learning how to be more. This solo minisode reflects on some of the lessons from my conversation with Allison Crow (Episode 07) and explores how releasing judgement, fear and ego helps us learn to be more of who we really are.

As a woman on a mission, it’s highly likely that you’ve experienced those times where your vision, ambition and dedication are tested. This solo minisode reflects on some of the insights from my conversation with Helen Bullen (Episode 09) and highlights how those are the moments where we turn weakness into strength, flaws into super powers and human frailty into self actualisation.

If you’ve ever judged yourself, maybe for being too much or not enough or simply just for being you, you’ll know the prison that contained female tech founder, Aimee Bateman, until she decided to break free. This week’s Insights episode looks back on our conversation (Episode 11) and suggests how, in setting ourselves free, we can become the person we know we were born to be.
Stepping into the unknown can be the hardest part of your mission, particularly when your calling is so compelling that you can't not respond. Ann’s journey as a heart-worker involves so much more than the beautiful doodles she is known for. In this episode, she shares the challenges of being heart-led and the literal ups and downs of living life on many levels.   ABOUT MY GUEST: ANN SKINNER Ann Skinner, aka Ann The Heartworker, is a coach and creative, helping you open your heart and live a life with more compassion, creativity and courage. She is the founder of The Heartworker’s Way and the creator of Annie and Eva. Apart from her work as a life coach and teacher, Ann also works as a doodle artist and visual storyteller. She is the published author/illustrator of The Art of Contribution and Annie and Eva Love Devon. Although Ann has worked as a change facilitator since 2007, she only found her creative powers by accident in 2016. It was the missing link that helped her realign to her heart centre and revolutionised her life and work. Ann now combines her superpowers as a coach and creative through a unique process called The Heartworker’s Way. The process shares both her wisdom and passion for doodling as a heart and mind expanding creative tool for wellbeing, empowerment and growth. Ann has worked with people from all over the world. Her clients are caring and generous souls who have often spent their lives being there for others, but have forgotten to extend that courtesy to themselves, resulting in feeling depleted and lost. Ann’s work offers a creative and loving space for her clients to heal and come home to themselves, helping them create sustainable change, from the inside out. Fear of stepping into the unknown can be paralysing. To dance with uncertainty takes courage, love, and a willingness to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. In this solo episode, we look back at my conversation with Ann Skinner - The Heartworker and explore how upgrading the questions we ask ourselves can have life changing results.
If there's one thing the Women on a Mission in Season One have in common, it's that 'the thing they can't not do' involves being true to who they are.  Each guest revealed their own unique perspective and experience of being a woman on a mission, and almost without exception talked of the importance of speaking truth, being authentic, and being true to the calling of your heart.  As I look back over the season, there really was something for everyone: Alison Jones on leadership and deciding to lead; Dr Karen Darke MBE on finding our inner gold; Julie Owen-Moylan on not needing permission from our inner committee; Allison Crow on why more isn't better; Helen Bullen on cutting out the noise; Aimee Bateman on breaking free from judgement; and  Ann Skinner on letting our heart lead the way. In the sharing of our stories and experiences, we encourage other women on a mission to do and be more when all is going well, and we inspire others in those moments where we simply need to keep going too.  GIFT TO DOWNLOAD: As a thank you for joining me during Season One, I have commissioned a Sketchnote summary of some of the key learnings my guests have shared.  Do download your own copy here: Heartbeats Sketchnote - Season One
Whether you've just found us, or you're a seasoned expert listener (no pun intended!) returning from Season One, welcome to the second season of the Women on a Mission Show.  In this short bonus episode, I introduce you to my guests for Season Two, and tell you a little about why I've invited them to join me and what you can expect from our conversations. Each one of them has a precious story that will encourage us to do and BE more when all is going well, and will also fill us with inspiration when we need to keep going too.
As questions go, it’s quite a biggie…. and it’s a hard question to ask ourselves without creating thoughts of expectation, enoughness, maybe even FOMO, if we’re not immediately sure of the answer. In this episode, Catherine Watkin – one of my earliest mentors since setting up in business - begins by asking herself this very searching question, and then takes us on an honest and insightful exploration of the various missions she has pursued in her career. If you’ve ever wondered if you’re really changing the world, this episode is for you. ABOUT MY GUEST: CATHERINE WATKIN Catherine Watkin is the UK’s leading expert in authentic and heart-centred sales. After a highly successful 20+ year career in sales Catherine now works with business owners who are gifted and passionate about what they do but struggle in business because they feel awkward about using traditional sales methods. She teaches them how to sell in a way that feels authentic and comfortable – so they can grow a great business while still feeling true to their values. Catherine is an authentic and inspiring role model for how it is possible to create a successful business without resorting to sleazy or manipulative sales and marketing techniques.     If “I am..” are two of the most powerful words we can use, then perhaps it's reasonable to assume that “Am I..?” is one of the most powerful questions we can pose. We often talk about the importance of mindset, but if we really want to change the world there are two even deeper levels we have to explore, and the first of these is the question of our identity. Knowing who we are and who we need to be to fulfil our calling. In this solo episode, we look back at my conversation with Catherine Watkin and begin to explore what it takes to say Hell Yes, I’m a Woman on a Mission!
It’s not an easy question to confront, but for Dr Liz O’Riordan, it wasn’t optional.  Having experienced breast cancer from both sides of the operating table, and been robbed of the personal and professional future she had dedicated her whole life to creating, Liz was not only left rebuilding her physical, mental & emotional wellbeing but also her very life purpose. Liz’s new mission is changing the landscape of cancer care by discussing the things other people don’t.  This episode is no exception!   ABOUT MY GUEST: DR LIZ O'RIORDAN Dr Liz O’Riordan is an author, broadcaster and international speaker. In 2015 she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer whilst working as a consultant breast surgeon. She returned to work after chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy but in 2018 she had a locoregional recurrence on her chest wall. Side effects of treatment meant that she could no longer operate. She co-wrote The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer with Professor Trisha Greenhalgh and is a powerful patient advocate and is passionate about educating health care professionals about what life is really like after a cancer diagnosis. She has just  launched a podcast called Don’t Ignore The Elephant where she talks about the things no-one else talks about with patients, like sex, exercise and death.
