Description
5th Graders at LREI take part in the innovative music curriculum the Young Composers & Improvisors Workshop (YCIW). YCIW seeks to give every student the opportunity to explore how music works through making original music. These pieces represent the very first attempt at composing for participants. Over the course of the semester in our music class students have been pursuing the answer to one simple question: “How can music tell a story?” Each student has provided his or her own answer to this question by exploring how music works. Beginning with melody and harmony then moving into form and performance practice students created their own unique expressions as a way to test how these parameters work. In so doing they have become composers! Just as every child has a natural inclination to make visual art so too does every child have the desire to organize sound in a creative way. These compositions are the outcome of an investigation into the communicative nature of music in which every musician takes part. As you read the program notes below and hear the music you will get a sense that our young composers have taken on that investigation in a truly imaginative and creative way!
The concert was performed by YCIW artists-in-residence the Metropolis Ensemble under the direction of Andrew Cyr.
