Workshop #26 Young Composers & Improvisors Workshop Recordings

5th Graders at LREI take part in the innovative music curriculum the Young Composers & Improvisors Workshop (YCIW). YCIW seeks to give every student the opportunity to explore how music works through making original music. These pieces represent the very first attempt at composing for participants. Over the course of the semester in our music class students have been pursuing the answer to one simple question: “How can music tell a story?” Each student has provided his or her own answer to this question by exploring how music works. Beginning with melody and harmony then moving into form and performance practice students created their own unique expressions as a way to test how these parameters work. In so doing they have become composers! Just as every child has a natural inclination to make visual art so too does every child have the desire to organize sound in a creative way. These compositions are the outcome of an investigation into the communicative nature of music in which every musician takes part. As you read the program notes below and hear the music you will get a sense that our young composers have taken on that investigation in a truly imaginative and creative way! The concert was performed by YCIW artists-in-residence the Metropolis Ensemble under the direction of Andrew Cyr.

Flying Through the Clouds by Clarissa

I titled my piece flying through the clouds because, in my main melody the notes go up. I decided to name it connecting to something in the sky or something that is up high. It was hard for me to begin this piece because I didn’t know how to begin. When we added three more instruments it was hard to avoid clashes between notes. Something I learned about music while I was making this was that you can’t just write down some notes and say it is music. People actually take a lot of time and effort to make the melody, write a part for each instrument, and do there best to make you happy when you listen to their music that they wrote. My piece is supposed to be about a bird flying around in the clouds. I dedicate my piece to my Mommy, Daddy and Sister for always being there for me.

Dancing Feet by Stella

I gave my piece the title Dancing Feet because it sounds a little like tiny dancer’s feet prancing across the floor. To compose the main melody of this piece, I first had to imagine a one measure melody, then I would close my eyes and listen to it and figure out what I thought came next. I did that for every single instrument because each instrument even though they have to blend together they must have their own melody too so that not all the instruments are playing the same thing. I think that composing this piece has made me a better musician because even though some parts I felt were impossible, I still had a lot of fun making it myself. Throughout this piece I learned that there are many different types of textures.

Picnic by the Water by Zoe

The name of my song is Picnic by the water. I named it that because my song is very calm and slow. In the beginning I thought we would make a melody and then some background parts, which we did but we also added a lot more than that. We needed an A part and then a B and then an A part again. We needed six instruments and dynamics. It was fun to be able to play around with the notes and make my own composition. Doing this project has helped me understand music a lot more.

Jets by Xander

I choose that name because I love the jets and I like my piece. The first thing I did was try out every note to see how they sounded. It was fun for me because I never composed my own piece before so it was a fun first experience. I learned all the notes like I know where c and d and now that helps me at home when I have saxophone lessons.

Holiday Cheer by Zariel

I gave my piece the name Holiday Cheer because I felt like it was close to the holidays and I said why not! So i gave it the name “Holiday cheer”. I began my piece totally different then it is now. At first my piece was all these weird notes just everywhere with no rhythm or smooth melodic sound. Then as the lessons started getting a little bit more complex my piece started sounding much better. Then I had the problem of adding different instruments, I wanted something that sounded nice and something that has a good harmony. Composing music was pretty difficult at first because it was my first time doing it. Then as I kept going I started to understand music a little more. I learned that it takes a really long time to compose a nice song. I thought that it could be done in as little as one week. I used to wonder why famous singers like Selena Gomez took a long time to come out with a new album. Now I know why. My song is related to getting ready for the new year and getting ready for christmas. At first my song is a bit fast and overwhelming, just like when you know the holidays are just around the corner. Then towards the middle my song is a bit more clam and relaxed, just like when you feel like you are ready for the holidays. Then towards the end it gets a bit more upbeat, just like in real life because you are so excited for what’s coming next. Then finally at the end of my piece its nice and slow and clam, just like sitting by the warm fire drinking hot coco with mini marshmallows. My piece is dedicated to my entire family. I love spending the holidays with them and I love them.

Rain by Tess

I named my piece “Rain” because in some parts, it gets louder, and some parts it gets lower. Rain gets heaver, and then it slows down and gets quiet. I began my piece by learning notes. After that, we started making short melodies. We chose a melody that we liked and we started building off our melody. In a short time, we were composing A and B sections. We started adding more instruments. I have always loved music, so it was really fun to make my own piece! There were challenges in the proses also. Like thinking of a melody or trying to make harmony. I learned that you can always learn something about music. There are many different kinds of music, music from all around the world. It is so cool to learn about how to put notes together, or how to make it louder or softer. Every music class, I learn something new, something that I can add to my piece. My piece is dedicated to my family. I hope you like my piece!

Sunset by Sierra

My piece I called Sunset because I picture a sunset when I play it. When I put together this piece I wanted it to have a strong feeling but still feel soft at the same time. I also think I sorta just went with it and I think it turned out great. When I was composing it I had a lot of fun because I think Matt really tried to make it as fun as he could for us and I really enjoyed that. When I made this music I learned that there was never really a mistake. It was more that could be made a little higher but now it sounds a lot better than it did when I first attempted it.I dedicate this piece to my Mom, Dad and little sister because they all gave me tips and always helped me when I needed it so thank you! Hope you enjoy!

Gimli’s March by Sophia

I gave my piece this title because it sounds like something from The Lord Of Rings or The Hobbit. It also sounds dwarfish so I named it Gimli’s March. I don’t know how I got to make it sound like this, but in the beginning I just put notes together and thought “does this sound good?” Now after doing this over and over again and knowing what all the fancy notes mean, and a little help from my friends, I have a composition. I think it is very hard to compose music, at least it was for me. It is also fun, playing around with notes too. I learned a lot about music and notes while I did this. I knew most of them when I played the piano but when I stopped I forgot, so it was fun to learn them again. My piece is dedicated to my frog who died, and my brothers who really like the lord of the rings.

The Sleeping Man’s Flight by Thomas

I gave this piece the title The Sleeping Man’s Flight because the rhythms change a lot and it seems like you’re flying through different neighborhoods and landing at the end. I began making my piece by doing the main melody, then I added another instrument, then another, until I had six instruments. It took one semester to write and at times was frustrating. It was weird to be able to write a piece for actual musicians to play. It is frustrating but fun to compose music, because you can mess up or have a really good idea. My piece is supposed to take place in the dead of night, on Christmas Eve. I dedicate my piece to my music teacher, Matt, because without him I could not have done any of this.

Morning Melody by Mia

My piece reminded me of the morning. I wanted to call it morning dew. Then my dad said, “It’s a morning dew melody”. Then I said “What about morning melody?” I liked that name. I began my piece by putting some simple notes together. I started with only three notes and kept changing the piece little by little until it sounded just right. I decided that my main instrument would be the french horn. I thought it was a good main instrument because it sounded great using just a few simple notes. I added a note and took notes away. Finally, it sounded good. That part was the violin. But then we had to add another instrument, and I chose the bassoon. It was very low and did not fit in with my piece, so I did not give it a lot of notes. I decided to change my main instrument to the flute, because it would sound much better. Matt told us that we had to add three more instruments, there would be six instruments total. I added the french horn the cello and the clarinet. I used the same parts as the other insturments. Composing music was really fun. It was trial and error. You tried one thing, it did not work. You tried another, it worked. Always try again. I really liked it. I learned try and try again if it does not work try something new. Your piece will turn out great. Even if it does not sound amazing to you it is amazing. Music is easy to make. You can make music with any thing even if its not an instrument. Music is a key to the world. My piece is dedicated to my sister Zoe.

Thunder in The Dark by Maxwell

I called my peice Thunder in The Dark because sometimes my peice was played soft and that reminds me of the dark for some reason. But not all of the notes are soft, some are loud and sharp like thunder. When I started my composition I wanted it to have one part that is easy to remember. I also wanted that catchy part to be repeated. During the course of making the composition I learned a lot of things(too many for me to list here.) I think that learning new things about music is better than having a good composition. When we first started making the composition I thought making a composition would be easy, but it was actually pretty hard. I think it would be hard to be Mozart or other famous composers.

Rainy Day by Pema Shingsar

I gave my piece this title because, it changes volume and rhythm a lot, when it rains it can be loud or quiet. I began my piece by composing the main melody. I wrote the first section and then the second. The third section was basically a copy of the first section, but with some repetition. After I had written the main melody, I started to change some of the notes, to make a memorable and singable melody. We started to add other instruments into our composition. We had to make sure all of the notes were a skip away which means that they were two lines or spaces away from each other. It was really hard to match up the notes, so that there were no dissonances. Making our own composition was really hard but it was also super fun. It takes way longer than I thought to make a six instrument composition. I learned that there is a lot more to it than just scribbling down random notes. There are so many guidelines you have to follow. I think when you are making music you have to listen to your whole piece when you make a change so that nothing clashes. I dedicate this composition to my dogs Marley, Biscuit, and my horse Archer.

Misty Mountain by Rafaella

I named my piece Misty Mountain, because it has a sort of misty foggy sound, and feel to it, just like some misty mountains. I started with my main melody, then using the home note to guide me and so many others. Through out the process I had difficulties and also discovered some new strong points I didn’t know I had. It is very fun to compose music but also can be very hard and confusing, but over all if you try your best and work hard your piece will turn out great I am sure of it. I learned that for every 2 minute song you listen to at least 1 to 2 days worth of work was put into it. I will never look at music the same again! My piece is about a hiker in rain boots climbing a mountain through winter slush and snow at two A.M. My piece is not dedicated to anybody in particular so I will just dedicate it to all my friends and family. I hope you like my piece

Festival Theme Song by Ryder

At first, my piece sounded really different than it sounds now. I just had quarter notes the whole time and clashes all over the place. Then I came up with my main melody and just kept on working up from there. The cello, the violin, and the bassoon have the main part in my piece. I felt like my piece represents a nice day on the beach and the waves are crashing down and you are laying in the sun just listening to the sounds around you. It was very challenging making the notes sound well together and deciding how I wanted my piece to sound. It has been very fun composing and I feel like I learned a lot. One thing I learned is that it takes a while to compose a piece!

Hot Air Ballon Ride by Leela

I gave my piece this title because it is very flowy, as if the notes are taking flight. Some parts go up, others go down. I began with creating a memorable melody which I gave to the clarinet to play. Then I added two more instruments and other background parts. Finally I added an ending and a total of six instruments. Composing music was challenging because sometimes my music wasn’t sounding the way I wanted. It was really fun being in composer’s shoes and making the music sound the way I wanted! My piece is dedicated to my sister, Aria.

A Stroll in the Park by Lucia

I picked this title because when I close my eyes, that is what I imagine. When I began my piece I was just putting down notes, but then I started to hear what would sound good. I learned a lot about composing. It was really fun composing music, I had revise it a lot because some things did not sound good. I learned about different types of textures in music and learned about dissonances. My piece is about someone taking a walk in the park.

Off We Go by Maeve

The title form my piece came from the fast exciting music. Music for me has a personality, this personality was eager and happy. So the title, Off We Go, to me sounded exciting and on its way, and eager. I began my piece with the main melody. From the beginning I knew I wanted my piece to be fast, so I started working on the melodic shape of my fast notes. Composing music is challenging but fun. It is really cool to do this because, before this I thought I could never make my own piece. It sounded crazy and never crossed my mind. Through this process I learned that if you play around with notes, it might sound better than what you had in your head. My piece is a early fall day to me, the color of my piece is a really, really dark brown.

Scooby by Matias

I began my piece by not really knowing what to do. I just started moving the notes to see if it sounded good. Composing my music was some times hard because I didn’t know what to add, but sometimes it was really fun because I just went with it. I learned that making music isn’t that hard.
