Description
You built the business. Now what?
Welcome to Your Big Next—the podcast for entrepreneurs who’ve conquered success but know there’s more. Here’s the truth: success alone isn’t enough, especially when it’s costing you your family, purpose, or quality of life.
I’m Liz, founder of Luminary Leadership Co., homeschooling mom of four (yes, chaos is my love language), and the trusted sounding board for visionaries like John Maxwell. Over the past dozen years, I’ve coached hundreds of high-level leaders through the exact moment you might be facing now: when you realize scaling harder, hiring faster, and hustling more aren’t the answers.
Here’s the thing: the world says do more. But what if the key isn’t doing at all? What if your next breakthrough requires slowing down, tuning in, and stepping into the calling that’s been quietly waiting for you to notice?
This podcast isn’t about tweaking your to-do list or finding hacks to make life “easier.” It’s about flipping the script on success and stepping boldly into the work that actually matters—the kind that lights you up, fuels your family, and leaves a legacy worth talking about.
Every week, we’ll hit you with paradigm-shifting ideas, game-changing strategies, and the kind of leadership insights that make you rethink everything you thought you knew about success.
If you’re ready to trade burnout for brilliance, hustle for heart, and empty achievement for a legacy that actually means something, then welcome home.
Your Big Next is waiting—let’s find it together.

As this year is coming to an end I’m sure you’re already looking ahead, setting goals for the next year and talking about all the things you're going to do and accomplish. Today’s episode is meant to encourage you to slow down a little bit. Slow down from that frame of thinking and spend a little bit more time thinking about who you want to be, and how you want to feel in this time that is fleeting. Turn off the “doing” for a second.Do not get me wrong - I love New year, the new energy and the gift of a new beginning as much as anyone but sometimes this serves as a crutch for people, one that ultimately sets them back. I have a habit of dreaming about what's next and how this year is going to be different, what my goals are going to be and just with the shifting of the calendar, I'm reinvigorated and reinspired. But the purpose of this episode is to help you realize that just setting goals isn't going to get you there, you have to slow down and become who you need to be in this next year in order to achieve your next level. I've had something placed on my heart as of the last year, that I've been successfully ignoring until now. This has led me down the path of exploring the idea of really shifting gears and leaning into a season of rest, creativity and not being in the weeds. Anytime I'm encountering a new way of pursuing something I haven't done yet, I reach out to people that I know have gone there before me and figured it out, people who have had the courage to take the steps that I haven't yet taken myself. And that's what brought me to Abbey Kyhl.Abbey is someone that I completely admire and she is here today to talk about her choice to take a sabbatical from her business and to really take space, and be present in a season of life when her kids really needed her. So today's conversation is truly beautiful. I asked some really pressing questions and Abbey was incredibly vulnerable and willing to share all the little back-end details of what it looks like to listen to your heart and take a step back. The topic of today’s episode is not our typical topic. In fact, we've never had anything quite like it on the show. But it's so critical and so necessary to talk about. Our guest today is Cheryl Kosmerl who is a licensed clinical social worker and has decades of experience working in that field. She has extensive history working with kids and adolescents and their families who have experienced abuse, neglect or trauma. But today's focus is specifically around the dangers that come with technology; things like sexting, pornography, and the fact that our children are being raised in an era where they have this in their back pocket at all times. And it's affecting everything from their brain development to the outcomes of their futures. Our kids have it harder than we had it but it's up to us to scaffold and shepherd them through these incredibly new and trying times. So, Cheryl's conversation today is very relevant to every parent. And don’t worry, this is not all doom and gloom. The good news is there are things we can do and things we have control over. There are ways that we can have conversations with our kids, we can equip them, we can prepare them, and it's our job to do it. No one else is going to do it for us.SHOW NOTES: https://luminaryleadershipco.com/episode149 RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE:For more information and resources from Cheryl, check out Sexting Solutions.Keep in touch with me at https://luminaryleadershipco.com/insider. I’m doing something I never thought I would do. Do you ever feel like you're being hit over the head with something time and again, and you just keep ignoring it because it's not how you planned to attack that particular area of your life? Because it feels too difficult or maybe too unconventional or too crazy? That's been my life for the last four months. I've been having all these wild signs and messages directly under my nose; so much so that I couldn't ignore it anymore. But it doesn’t mean that it felt natural. It's been kind of an unearthing and painful evolution. So today, I'm sharing something that I never could have imagined sharing - I am taking a sabbatical. But it's not what you think. I'm not falling off the face of the earth, this is not a vacation. So if you're curious about what this sabbatical is, how I intend to do it and why, or if it sounds either dreamy or absolute lunacy to you - this is the episode for you. I am absolutely blown away by the response we've received thus far for dedicating an entire month to this idea of technology! From the standpoint of how we're being targeted and how our kids are being targeted to how to work with tech and not give into the temptation of becoming addicted to our devices - this month is all about helping entrepreneurs be a little less tech dependent and helping entrepreneurial families weave the two and choose a path forward in technology. For this reason, I knew I had to have Andrea Davis on the show. Andrea is a former secondary ed teacher, turned screen time navigator, and she's the founder of Better Screen Time. She shares family tested ideas from the tech trenches as a mother of five and she's on this mission to help parents worry less about technology and connect more with their children, which is a really challenging thing to do in this day and age. She is just a wealth of knowledge in this space and I’m so excited for this conversation, even though I know it might ruffle some feathers. But I invite you to keep an open mind and to take what you need for you, your family, your business and your life. Today we're talking about the idea of gratitude and entitlement as well as the role that we personally play as entrepreneurs in our kids stories related to those two specific things. We are combating entitlement while, at the same time, we want to give our kids the world. There was a time when raising grateful kids might have been a little bit easier, but I think we are up against a bigger fight nowadays. Expectations have changed. Childhood has changed. The family has changed. And the end result? A lot of entitled kids. So, what are some things we can actively do to combat it? How can we play a pivotal role in our kids' lives as entrepreneurs, as leaders and as parents? Let's raise them up right! Right now, the average amount of time that kids are spending outside is four to seven minutes. But the data shows that the amount of time they should be spending outside for their brain development, for their growth, for critical thinking skills, for leadership should be four to seven hours. And the average amount of time that kids today are spending on devices is four to seven hours. We have it completely backwards and if you're an entrepreneur who is raising kids, this is an episode you have to hear. This is one of my all time favorite interviews on this show. My guest today is a good friend of mine, Ginny Yurich. Ginny is the Founder of 1000 Hours Outside and the entire premise of Ginny's movement, and her company is really propelling kids to get outside and experience all the beauty that nature has to offer and the benefits that it has on their growth and their leadership. In today's conversation, we go over the birth of this movement and how it came to be so organically for Ginny and how the pain in her life as a mother really propelled her into where she was being led. Ginny also gives strategic, tactical steps on how you can do this too and explains the way she brought her kids into the business and the benefits of entrepreneurship for her family. So there's practical wisdom in today's episode, not to mention the fact that she's just a wealth of knowledge around so many different things. Can’t wait for you to hear this one! So far this month, we've covered a variety of topics around technology and what it's doing to our families and our businesses, the good and the bad. So today, I want to outline a process that's going to help you tame the “tech jungle” and make sure you are intentionally using it as a positive tool that it's meant to be, and not slipping into habits that are going to make you wonder how you or your kids ended up there. Can you build a successful online business WITHOUT social media? If this thought ever crossed your mind, you’re going to love today’s conversation. My guest today is Shanna Skidmore, a former Fortune 100 financial advisor who turned into a business consultant helping entrepreneurs dig through the data, optimize the metrics and get a firm grasp on the finances (something most of us don't like to do). On top of all that, Shanna has also built her incredibly successful business and she's done it off of social media. You read that right, she's built a successful online business off social media. Is that even viable? Is that even an option? Did she sacrifice millions of dollars in doing that? Well, today we're digging into it. We're going to ask her all the questions about how she did it, when she made that transition, what it looks like and how you can do it too. Let's dive into it! Today, we are continuing with our technology series! Technology is our reality. It is out there. It is boisterous. It is loud. And, it’s something that is so prevalent and so important, especially in the lives of entrepreneurs. We have to know how to raise babies and raise businesses in a technological era. It's pretty common to just go through life conforming naturally to what comes next. But being informed is different from conforming. And being conscious of how technology targets us and targets our kids, making the decision as business owners to how and when we will use and leverage tech ourselves in our own marketing, and where we're going to draw the line and what's ethical to us is so important. So today, we're sharing some pretty enlightening (and kinda scary) data and information to help you make more conscientious decisions for your family, for your business, for yourself. How are companies actively targeting you and your children? What is really going on that we're not being told and what to do about it? Let's dive into it! How do you raise children alongside technology? I see so much content out there around technology and our kids. And it’s either total doom and gloom; or it is what it is, just let it be. There's no happy medium, there's no discussion around this. As entrepreneurs, we need to be intentional about how and when we introduce technology to our kids, the way we talk about it, the way we model it, because the reality is - in some capacity, our businesses do depend on tech and also, our kids are growing up in a tech era. On top of that, my guess is that our kids see us on our devices more than the average kids, because we are running our businesses and our businesses are constantly with us. So, it's kind of inescapable. But this doesn't mean we're helpless. I'm going to spend the next month talking about a few big topics around this idea to help us be more informed and make an intentional plan that's best for our entrepreneurial families. So, armor up! Because this is not an easy conversation, but it's a necessary one. Let's raise them up right! How many people do you know right now that just don't feel great? Sadly, an all too common theme among entrepreneurs especially, but really people across the board, is navigating illness. And when I say illness, I mean the absence of thriving; a lot of the things we face are just symptoms we chalk up to working a lot, or having young kids, or being postpartum, or whatever it is - when oftentimes, it goes deeper than that. Whether it's a multi-year struggle with intense symptoms and very few answers, like I've been walking through, or a diagnosis that you’re up against and have to battle, too many of us are some version of sick. So, today's episode is both an update as I've learned more about my own struggles recently, and a chance to share my heart with those of you who might be building your dreams alongside some pain. IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVER: [2:14] It’s All for a Reason [5:15] The Gift of Suffering [9:05] The Update [22:56] Pieces of Wisdom SHOW NOTES: https://luminaryleadershipco.com/episode138 Did this episode resonate with you? Today's episode is going to be a powerful one! I know we all feel called to raise these incredibly confident kids. But at the same time, we want them to have humility, too and have the right perspective on the world. As entrepreneurs, we are naturally pretty confident people otherwise, we wouldn't take the leaps that we do take. We are sure of who we are, we know what we stand for and we are confident in our own ability to do something or to figure out how to do it. But, how do we raise confident people? Is this a learned skill? Is it modeled? Is it in our DNA? And where does humility come in? How can kids be both/and? Today’s episode is an important conversation around raising humble, confident kids. Let's raise them up right! IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVER: [2:09] Confidence and Resilience [3:40] Open Conversations [7:05] Show Them the Power of Entrepreneurship [9:51] The Balance Between Humility and Confidence SHOW NOTES: https://luminaryleadershipco.com/episode137 Did this episode resonate with you? Are you trying to keep up with the Joneses? Today we're talking about a phenomenon I've seen across the board in entrepreneurship that I think is preventing people from achieving their true potential in both business and in life and that is the need to keep up appearances. This is stripping entrepreneurs from the possibility of the satisfaction that they're craving, so they keep pushing and trying to achieve things without ever actually feeling that fulfillment. It's used to put up whatever façade necessary to look successful, like you have this amazing life or thriving business. When in reality, you're human, like everybody else, and there are ups and downs to the journey. And with the rise of social media, there's this extra pressure and a stigma that comes with running a front-facing business. Today, we’re talking about why I took a break from joining a mastermind myself and how to break free of the “smoke and mirrors” culture that is creating a lot of curated squares but very shallow businesses and vapid business owners. IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVER: [2:54] Why I Took a Break from Masterminds [12:43] Growth Comes from Awareness [18:23] The Damage This Can Do SHOW NOTES: https://luminaryleadershipco.com/episode136 RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE: Check out our Luminary Leadership Incubator for more information! Entrepreneurial parent, family-first entrepreneur, founder family - these are all the phrases that capture the essence of what matters to you. You're not just an entrepreneur, you're not just a parent, you're this beautiful combination of the two. And we’ve put a little definition together to continue to paint the picture of what that means. To us, a founder family captures the entrepreneurs who have successfully integrated their family and business into one powerful mission in life together, and it results in fulfillment, freedom and legacy. We're raising luminaries, the people who will go on to inspire and influence others and who are prominent in their sphere. And in many ways, we're raising ourselves up to be luminaries as well. If this sounds like you or who you aspire to be, today's episode is going to give you a few key shifts to becoming and working towards being that family-first entrepreneur. Because it's all about being a work in progress, the little decisions we make, those small 20 minute increments of our day that lead to the big picture, vision and legacy that we're craving and creating in our minds.
