Description

Yelling at concrete isbi-weekly podcast for coffee and conversation, taking a look at the life and interests of the guests who chat with me as well as taking an introverted look at topics I'm interested in!

Graham is an artist and passionate creative who thrives on generating conversation and discussion in a more abstract manner than just posing questions so three weeks out of each month with a one week breather he sits down to have a cuppa and chat. When guests come they bring their own topic so every episode is lead by the guests interests and what they want to discuss and the solo casts are wandering thoughts on subjects which interest Graham. The goal is keep the subjects diverse and give people a space to just have a chill and talk about what's really going on.

You can catch the show three times a month on a Friday and follow it through the year as Graham brings you a range of guests and topics. The key word is conversation so we don't edit we just talk and that allows us to relax and really get into subjects. I hope you'll join us.

This week I sit down with artist Marty Gordon, Collage and cartoonist and overall interesting artist! Marty was recommended to me by other people which is apt for the topic of the show but also as he has a fascinating background as a former minister and a strong love of community for art which of course fits very well with this show!As such as sat down this week to talk about the challenges as an artist on topics such as finding the right moments to create, storing work, keeping in the scene and how certain spaces can vary in the level of support provided to you before after and during a show. We are both huge believers in lifting up other artists and creating actual connections rather than adding someone to a follow list and as such it was a pleasure to be able to talk through that landscape of thought with Marty. Maybe it's the millennial in me but I want bridge the gap in defense of small talk. It's a bridge we use with one another and in many ways in an art form in itself. Some are bad some are good but over all we need it to put people at ease and grow communication more effectively. And no you don't owe anyone happiness or politeness but we do owe people the benefit of the doubt and helping them when they are anxious. So this week we sit down to talk gen z stare, social situations, Gen X rudeness, Millennial humor and all the other things which will get me into trouble for even mentioning them online as an old man.The show is available on:Ituneshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yelling-at-concrete/id1238765054Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3T2OhYE07edgaBDXrm86saAcasthttps://shows.acast.com/yellingatconcreteSupport us onhttps://www.patreon.com/yellingatconcreteIf you'd like to support at all there is a patreon and I have the goal of finding 38 members by the end of the year to make the show fully funded in terms of the running costs! Creating installations, comics looking at graphic medicine and talking on a multitude of topics. I am a firm believer that all things can be art, you only need label them as such. I also believe there is good and bad art. Something I think is important to remember when dealing with artists though is that art is accidental. There is a level of organic chaos which is resonant in creation and whilst I'm not declaring all art is a fluke or can be waved away or "anyone can do that" I am saying declaring yourself the best is wrong and saying all things were intended at the time of creation is also wrong. But hey maybe I'm just bad at art.The show is available on:Ituneshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yelling-at-concrete/id1238765054Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3T2OhYE07edgaBDXrm86saAcasthttps://shows.acast.com/yellingatconcreteSupport us onhttps://www.patreon.com/yellingatconcreteIf you'd like to support at all there is a patreon and I have the goal of finding 38 members by the end of the year to make the show fully funded in terms of the running costs! This week i sit down for a rare in person podcast where I travel to Mystic Connecticut for the first time to meet Stacy Crouse! Stacy is healer and counselor who believes in radical love and connection to humanity through enlightenment through life. So how did she end up talking to spiritually cynical concrete? Well as despite our approaches to life differing we have something huge in common. We like learning about people, supporting communities and building strong human connections. And seeing as this whole podcast is based upon life experience and conversation It seemed like a great opportunity to meet an online friend and see more of the country. So sit back, chill and a warning that there is discussion of family death in this episode. As we dive into what makes the world go around and how Stacy found space within intense experiences.Find more of Stacy:https://www.instagram.com/siddhanimomma/https://www.siddhaniwellness.com/about-stacy-modern-shamanThe show is available on:Ituneshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yelling-at-concrete/id1238765054Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3T2OhYE07edgaBDXrm86saAcasthttps://shows.acast.com/yellingatconcreteSupport us onhttps://www.patreon.com/yellingatconcreteIf you'd like to support at all there is a patreon and I have the goal of finding 38 members by the end of the year to make the show fully funded in terms of the running costs! This week I sit still to talk life lessons, discovery and how the outside world really can impact what you thought you were teaching yourself. With talk on self care and injury it's worth taking a step back some times and making a piece for yourself rather than other people. So this week I try to remind myself that I have been through things before and will again. The show is available on:Ituneshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yelling-at-concrete/id1238765054Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3T2OhYE07edgaBDXrm86saAcasthttps://shows.acast.com/yellingatconcreteSupport us onhttps://www.patreon.com/yellingatconcreteIf you'd like to support at all there is a patreon and I have the goal of finding 38 members by the end of the year to make the show fully funded in terms of the running costs! This week I sit down to discuss reproduction, sampling, creation and growth as an artist and how different mediums have different cultures around the way they create.Really i depends on mindset more than anything and honesty when making art. If you were inspire. TELL PEOPLE. Don't hide it. This week I get to sit down with comic creator, journalist, zine maker extraordinaire that is Caitlin Cook. Better known as Cooklin online I've been following her work a long while after discovering her comics about depression and then getting an insight into Asexuality through her other work. Not one to shy away from the harder topics and with a great sense of humour and story telling I thought she'd be a great person to catch up with.We sit down to talk varied backgrounds of artists and how that comes into play when you create and market your work but also how that helps balance your own expectations of what can be achieved. Caitlin has a storied background in media and news and had a book coming out in the near term dealing in memoirs and sexuality so I highly recommend checking her out and giving her a follow to find out more!Find Cooklin at:https://www.instagram.com/cooklin_comics/https://microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/artist/cooklinhttps://www.etsy.com/shop/CooklinComicsStorehttps://linktr.ee/cooklinhttps://sites.google.com/view/cooklincomicsThe show is available on:Ituneshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yelling-at-concrete/id1238765054Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3T2OhYE07edgaBDXrm86saAcasthttps://shows.acast.com/yellingatconcreteSupport us onhttps://www.patreon.com/yellingatconcreteIf you'd like to support at all there is a patreon and I have the goal of finding 38 members by the end of the year to make the show fully funded in terms of the running costs! This week I sit down to talk, trail and error. To talk failure to talk about how easy is it to be stopped at the first hurdle, the first locked door and figuring out the world. I am a person who for my own faults does not give up easily. I'll try to make it fit. To make it work. To build the thing my self but I don't know I was always like this. So lets talk about it and coin a phrase. Rate of inconvenience. How many inconveniences do you need to have for you to no longer progress and to either give up or frustrate/convince yourself not to move forward and if you can identify that number...can you improve it?The show is available on:Ituneshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yelling-at-concrete/id1238765054Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3T2OhYE07edgaBDXrm86saAcasthttps://shows.acast.com/yellingatconcreteSupport us onhttps://www.patreon.com/yellingatconcreteIf you'd like to support at all there is a patreon and I have the goal of finding 38 members by the end of the year to make the show fully funded in terms of the running costs! This week I sit down with actor, teacher and overall performance creator  ⁨@ryangilmartin5876⁩  as we talk about a challenge. Ryan like myself is from a background in small towns and villages but also like me has been and seen plenty of the world. Creating shows and experiences Ryan mixes history, folklore and insight to try and bring more creative opportunities to the world. So this week we talk about the challenge of doing that in smaller and more rural places. Embracing the native homesteads and looking at how places like the East Midlands, Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and Humberside (I could keep going) face a challenge with not only finding creative and conceptually forward spaces but how generating those places can be a challenge too. To bring something not purely functional to an area where frivolity is met with suspicion is a challenge and a topic close to my core!I do suggest you check out Ryan and what he's up to. At the time this episode goes live he's performing in "Henry the VIII used to hate us" and tickets are available across the east of England.Ryan's links:https://easternangles.co.uk/event/henry-viii-used-to-hate-us/https://www.instagram.com/ryan.gilmartin1/The show is available on:Ituneshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yelling-at-concrete/id1238765054Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3T2OhYE07edgaBDXrm86saAcasthttps://shows.acast.com/yellingatconcreteSupport us onhttps://www.patreon.com/yellingatconcreteIf you'd like to support at all there is a patreon and I have the goal of finding 38 members by the end of the year to make the show fully funded in terms of the running costs! This week I slide down the counter to talk about how rarely some decisions are in your hand, be it through resources, days of the week or simply that the options are too many. I talk through a lazy easter Sunday and think on all that could have been and how my mind often doesn't let me rest.Something I think a lot of people end up dealing with is indecision and splitting priority. Because the world is abundant and you have so much to do and want to do and so little time. So this week I talk through that. This week I sat down with Mariela Flor Olivo "Mari" who talked me through the wonderful world of learning! Mari is an extremely talented individual who has taken on exploring art and creation through performance and continues to do so. This week we talk about how learning skills of self expression is more than just mastering the art itself but gives you all these extra talents like people skills, cognitive theory and mindful practice that transfer to the day to day work we do!I've seen this no end in real life working with people who have side passions and who have made their living at the behest of their art but made it to support their own art as well. So if you're worried about the careful balance of art and capitalism or how working class artists get left behind you should maybe sit down for this chat too as it might help perspective or how people from different backgrounds can find their spaces to create. This week I sit down to talk cognition and problem solving. It seems more often than not when I talk to people about problems the main blocker is they are thinking about it. Over thinking it. Needing to map an idea out and really detail through something. Which is one way of doing it. The other is to go the other approach. Stop thinking. Do something else. Watch something. Entertain yourself. Put your body through some stress. My theory is as a human we've have fight or flight and during moments when we are problem fixated you can use that fight or flight to cut through to what you truly want. So this week I cosy in and sit and think about the notion of just not thinking. This week we talk the draw backs, the struggles the problems with having multiple interests. Being multi interested can be a problem for a creative soul. It means you'll always be stretched thin, always struggle to target an audience and over all always have unfinished ambitions but at the same time...Damn it's fun. After recent conversations with guests  @ItsKavi  and  @AllOneVoice  It seems like I'm not alone in my pursuit of being a little bit of everything all at once. So this week I sit down to talk about how to manage that expectation and perhaps give a little insight for budding creatives. Continuing the chain letter of suggested guests! This week I got time to sit down with Ska Punk extraordinaire  @DavidMcWane  Former drummer now Singer of Big D and The Kids Table. A band who I actually found out about maybe 20+ years ago when I was coming up through the alternative music scene. Dave sat down with me to talk multiple topics the main of which is the American fascination with idols and royals and the impact that can have on artists starting out. It's a sobering lesson for anyone trying to create to know there is a blocker ahead but by recognizing it we can challenge it and keep creating! You should definitely check out Daves music  @bigdandthekidstable  Especially as they are on tour and live music is life blood! More of a conceptual walk through that a narrative one. After seeing a mountain of Essays and reviews of The Simpsons I decided the only real apporach I could take is to ask. This week i sit down with a word smith in the form of  @AllOneVoice  Bruce. Bruce is a writer, rapper, poet and journalist who i know of having seen him perform along side one of my other guests! I sort of knew Bruce would be a great conversation to have as his work often delves into topic i consider in my own creative process as well as just being a very well rounded creator who is simply looking at the core to express and enjoy that journey. This week we sit down to talk method, to talk creation and figure out inspirations impact on how you come to be as an artist. A lot of art especially in the modern era is seen as imitational but art inspiration can come from any method or moment not just ones in the same vien as your own. So sit down, grab a drink and consider these points. Also check out Bruce's work. As we enter the new year it's important to take stock and listen to your mind and your body and the random man on the internet as he has a slight breakdown of recent conversations he's had about why we create art. How we improve on ourselves and how that comes through in the work we make. Resolutions can be a flag, a badge of honour or just a bench mark but they dont need to be ruiners of your self esteem and progress. So we discuss how better is a false term and too vague or a line to request feedback or even consider yourself. I'd love to hear the challenges you're setting yourself though and goals for the future so it you're so inclined let me know below.
