Description

Hosted by standup comedian and veteran creative director Hersh Rephun, YES, BRAND: The Podcast is an entertaining and insightful hour during which Hersh talks with entrepreneurs, brand execs, marketers, filmmakers, artists, comedians and other “truth experts”, to explore the dual attributes of honesty and deception. Hersh Rephun’s career spans two decades as a writer and creator of multi-platform content, marketing and PR campaigns. His diverse clientele spans advertising, entertainment and apparel. Hersh served as a publicist for some of the most high-profile and awarded commercial directors and production companies in the world, including Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air), Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures, St. Vincent) and Anonymous Content. His clients have been featured in leading trades and honored with every major industry award, including Cannes Gold Lions, Palme d’Or, Grand Prix, AICP, DGA, Clio and One Show. In 2016, Hersh oversaw PR for Andrew Laurich’s subversive short, A Reasonable Request, which was named “Today’s Best Short” by Digg, ranked amongst VICE’s “Top 10 Shorts of the Year,” shortlisted for Vimeo’s “Best Videos of the Year,” and bears the rare distinction of screening at both SxSW and Sundance in 2016. He also spearheaded marketing for the feature, Erasing Eden, a breakout on the festival circuit. Hersh’s advertising industry background, paired with comedy chops earned at standup gigs across the country, led to the creation of an online branding campaign establishing fledgling East Coast distillery Manatawny Still Works. His dual expertise is also at play on YES, BRAND: The Podcast, which Hersh describes as “equal parts laughter and introspection” His initial guests include Birkenstock Americas CEO David Kahan and Filmmaker Jordan Brady (I AM COMIC). “SMITHEREENS,” a comedy pilot written by Hersh, was a Best Screenplay finalist at the LA Comedy Fest and Beverly Hills Film Fest. In 2016, “SMITHEREENS” was presented in a live reading at the Comedy Film & Screenplay Festival.

Good tech vs Bad Tech. The freedom of the open road. What kind of world do we want to live in? These are issues tackled by “Bearclaw,” the lead character in Warren Lam’s new sci-fi web series, Moto Nostra. They’re also themes broached in my sit-down with actor Travis Hinson, who plays the role. While... The post Data is Not Destiny: The liberation of Travis Hinson appeared first on Yes Brand Podcast.

On this episode of the YES, BRAND podcast, author Cash Keahey and I discuss the 8 leadership styles defined by Donald Trump’s predecessors – and how the current POTUS fits into these classic molds. Eric Alegria has that look, at once a genial everyman and a chiseled lead, he could be your hotel clerk (as he was, in Marriott’s Fairfield Inn campaign, starring Mr. T), a star soccer player (Budweiser), or, well, the voice of a gecko (for Jeep, not Geico). He’s also cut his teeth onstage, at comedy... The post How to become a working actor in Hollywood without losing your sense of humor appeared first on Yes Brand Podcast.

I recently had the singular experience of sitting for James Walker. He’d photographed me previously, when we took some fun standup comedy shots for my personal website. What if I asked you to open a successful bar/restaurant in LA? We sat down in the Englert Theatre during a rare, quiet moment, on the heels of the Witching Hour Festival, to discuss Andre’s journey from internet advertising creative to curator and developer of the most direct-to-consumer content one can think of: live theatre. “Real life is not a movie.” “Why can’t it be?” As we near our 30th episode, the YES, BRAND podcast is coming into its own. It’s always had to do with truth in advertising, with a dose of comedic self-analysis. But today is different. Today we find our true voice, and embark on our real mission: Exploring the Brand-Consumer Relationship. In order to accomplish this in earnest, we have to know where the brand ends and the consumer begins. In this episode, I sit down with the man I think of as a “universal documentarian,” Roger Roth. While I trust the audio is engaging an entertaining, as always (perhaps more?), Episode 29 is the first to be recorded on video – with three cameras, no less! Thus, the show becomes part of Roger’s LifeUmentary. It’s a project he’s been developing for more than a dozen years, placing Roger in front of, behind, and beside the camera, on numerous levels, multiple personas, and in a quest for the truth about our chosen realities. You might recognize Roger from his role in JLE’s popular show “The Gentlemen’s Rant.” But you’ll know him really well after listening to this podcast. As you’ll see, there’s some important stuff revealed and discussed over the course of my time with Roger. From marriage to monetization, we really do get into the complexities of life, art and commerce. Thank you, Roger! On one level, my conversation with DeMane Davis explores her journey from copywriter to feature filmmaker, spot helmer and now episodic TV director (her latest episode of Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar airs on OWN November 8). On another level, it is an exploration of this moment in time, culturally, sociologically, and in some way, therapeutically. DeMane’s first two features, Black & White & Red All Over, and LIFT (starring Kerry Washington), debuted in Dramatic Competition at Sundance. Roger Ebert called the former “remarkable,” and Amy Taubin named it “One of the Most Original American Indies of 1997.” LIFT won the Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award and was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards. The Boston native started out at agencies such as Heater Advertising, and as an award-winning Copywriter/Creative Director, DeMane’s national and international brand clients have included Nike, Citibank, Cigna and the BET Awards, to name a few. We bounce around from DeMane’s latchkey childhood – during which she pretended to act in commercials in front of the mirror – to the transition from make-believe to becoming a paid creative, and, of course, getting “the email” from Ava DuVernay. DeMane also reflects on the relevance her earlier work has in today’s fractious and troubled climate. We talk about hope, love, coming together, and the possibility of change. On the lighter side, we also chat about some of our favorite movies (Sexy Beast, among them), The Jerky Boys and why the Cockney dialect is useful in dealing with telemarketers and credit card companies. http://www.oprah.com/app/queen-sugar.html http://www.demanedavis.com/about-forte/   The post Adventures in the Screen Trade with “Queen Sugar” Director DeMane Davis appeared first on Yes Brand Podcast.
What do American Horror Story & the YES, BRAND Podcast have in common? Fresh off a shoot with “The Most Interesting Man in the World” Jonathan Goldsmith, director Andrew Laurich (repped for spots by ContagiousLA) graces our podcast. The digital project, created via agency Erich & Kallman, marks Goldsmith’s full-on commercial debut for Astral Tequila – take that, Dos Equis! – and breaks October 8. On October 10, Andrew kicks it up a notch yet again, with the short film Live Bait, which will air on FOX during American Horror Story. Andrew’s adventures in commercial filmmaking span everything from cars (Mercedes with pro golfer Rickie Fowler) to clothes (a film series celebrating Carhartt’s 125th Anniversary), but he topped all of that last year with the sensational run of “A Reasonable Request,” a father-son incest comedy he directed (and co-wrote, with Gabriel Miller) that bears the rare distinction of screening both at Sundance and SxSW. His follow-up, “A Study in Tyranny,” is a prescient exploration of what might happen if a man could go back in time and assassinate a malignant narcissist (in this case, Adolf Hitler) in his formative years. We talk about all this, and discuss social responsibility in the digital age, while dipping an ever-so-tiny toe into the pool of contemporary politics. View Andrew’s films and branded work on his website. The post Andrew Laurich talks Father-son incest, Hitler fantasies and more – in SMELLaudio! appeared first on Yes Brand Podcast.
Jeff pops his podcast cherry! We’re honored to host the podcast debut of director/editor/writer Jeff Jenkins, whose work spans short films (“Star Struck”), digital series (“MISSHAPS” with YouTube star Kristen Hancher, via Brat), and national commercials (Ace Hardware, Wienerschnitzel, Amazon) – all of it with singular flair and quirkiness. Jeff lives in Los Angeles, and... The post Getting Weird with Filmmaker Jeff Jenkins appeared first on Yes Brand Podcast.

Jeff Holland whips us into shape on this episode of YES, BRAND! Jeff Holland Each episode of the YES, BRAND podcast has its own flavor and theme. In between episodes, I’ve been exercising at 9Round, my new favorite gym. For a sporadically-motivated, generally indulgent ad biz guy, I’ve managed to derive a great deal of benefit from my 30-minute workouts (the program was created by world kickboxing champion Shannon “The Cannon” Hudson). So, I thought it would be fitting to have Jeff Holland, proprietor of 9Round Fitness, come on the show and share the wealth. Our chat covers the usual – divorce, illness, and how long kids should stay on your health insurance and your mobile plan (we also question WTF Apple is thinking with the 7 Plus). We also talk about franchise marketing, particularly in health/fitness, and try to unearth the key to a healthy attitude, lifestyle, and state of mind. As a bonus: at around 27 minutes into this interview, I become a crotchety and out-of-touch midwestern guy (and of all the impressions I’ve done, Dave Letterman has never been among them). Make of that what you will, but it hit me outta nowhere. Anyway, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to be. Please welcome Jeff Holland to this episode of YES, BRAND!
