Description

Yo, Is This Racist?, hosted by Andrew Ti, creator of the popular blog of the same name, is now a weekly podcast! Every Wednesday, Ti, co-host Tawny Newsome, and their guests answer questions from fan-submitted voicemails and emails about whether or not something is, in fact, racist.
107 Episodes
Reverse
Andrew & Tawny are joined by Negin Farsad (Fake The Nation) to discuss the violent insurrection at the Capitol, and the styles of right-wing media that got us here. In lieu of our normal voicemails, we dive deep into the winners of the Georgia runoff elections, the internet's deification of Stacy Abrams, and what is keeping us optimistic through these times. We'll be back with our regular format next week, and call us at 323-389-RACE to have your question answered on the show!  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Andrew and Tawny are away for the week, but we wanted to give y'all one of our favorite bonus episodes, straight from the subscription-only Sub-Optimal Bundle. We naturally start the Sub-Optimal Bundle with A Goofy Movie Watchalong, and are proud to announce a conclusive answer to the question: "Is Goofy a Black movie?" We talk about a few of the hidden messages, review the animatronic opossum band, and wonder WTF happened to Goofy's mom (fishing accident?). Listen and watch along with us! If you want to subscribe, you can do so at https://suboptimalpods.com for all of our bonus episodes, music releases, and more. We'll be back next week with our regularly scheduled racism!  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Andrew & Tawny kick off the episode with a philosophical discussion of whether or not yogurt should be considered a candy. Then, Andrew fills us in on his family’s problematic Christmas debate. This week’s voicemail prompts us to discuss whether or not “White” should be capitalized, as well as the implications of the New York Times article, “A Racial Slur, a Viral Video, and a Reckoning.” Call in if you have a racism question at 323-389-RACE. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We’re joined by Kulap Vilaysack & Suchin Pak (Add To Cart) to discuss their podcast, tweets about The Negro Solstice, and self help books. Then, we dive into this week’s voicemails where one listener journeys to find good tamales and another navigates a tricky mother-in-law situation. Stay safe out there and happy holidays! Call in if you have a racism question at 323-389-RACE. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Andrew, Tawny, and former producer Matt Apodaca discuss their experiences with Christmas trees before getting to this week's current events: a person who washes their beef and Phoebe Bridgers' statements about podcasting. This week's voicemails include questions about how to show that you're an ally, and whether or not it's problematic to own Black Art if you're white. Call in if you have a racism question at 323-389-RACE.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Andrew and Tawny are joined by former producer (now friend) Matt Apodaca to chat about Matt's recent birthday. Then, we catch you up on the ever-growing saga of Rudy Guiliani before answering your voicemails about country music and Taiwanese Love Boats. Call in if you have a racism question at 323-389-RACE.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Andrew, Tawny, and former producer Cody Ziglar celebrate the first ever independent episode of the show. We talk about the process of going indie, and answer this week's voicemails about customer service employees and Facebook threads about the Grammy's. Stay safe, and call in if you have a racism question at 323-389-RACE. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

At some point a year or so ago, I sat down and really thoroughly investigated this topic because I was so sick of hearing that BS about Africans selling "their own people" to white slave-traders. Some of the contemporary slavery practices in West Africa were much worse than indentured servitude, which is bad enough. There's also some indication that certain leaders did know about chattel slavery in the Americas and thus what they were actually doing when they sold other peoples (no one sold their own people, AFAIK) into the Atlantic slave trade. That being said, it's still a totally disingenuous "argument" and devoid of logic for the reasons ya'll mentioned. Plus, slave-traders were also going into the bush and literally kidnapping people without anyone's knowledge. The whole enterprise was/is indefensible and the fact that people still try to weasel around that fact is just... disgusting.

Today's episode dump was a LOT... who knew they had over 1000 episodes? But good for them, going independent. The podcast is definitely better now than it used to be, partially because Andrew got better at it, and partially because Tawny Newsome is an American treasure. This is one of the few podcasts worth listening to every episode without even having to read this week's episode description, although let's be honest, there's no way anyone is listening to the entire back catalog. Some of these topics are topical while also being eternally relevant.

listened for 15 minutes or so, heard no questions or content actually unpacking racism. you did however manage to lump all white people into racists and say words that are likely just as offensive to some (not all) people who identify as Christian. as long as people continue to say jesus christ willy nilly, its likely the people you are trying to inform and educate (I assume that is your mission due to the name of the cast) with your podcast will not be convinced that some rather obscure items are racist.

That girl was very young. She will reflect, or should reflect her own experiences, including her aspirational experiences . Up to the reader to interpret. In what sounds like her age group, it's probably YA lit which is full of cliche's and stereotypes. this would have been better as a live conversation.

As a a white chick that has been around black people my whole life I have picked up saying "Don't be..." Like, "Don't be calling me this early" but then I add something Valley like "Don't be calling me this early, dude." Do I need speech lessons and to just start over?

So basically this is just a Podcast being racist towards white people? You do know that not ALL white people are racist and not ALL Mexicans are hard workers etc lol Saying shit like this is what creates more racism!! Seriously? MAn way to take not onlt the BLM movement down a decade but also racism in general. And I am only on your 1,000 episode we solved racisim which is the 1st episode on Castbox. So disappointing! I thought this might be something funny with a message. Y' all have a platform USE IT!!!!

I was initially interested in this podcast mostly because my husband is Panamanian and I am American so being in an interracial marriage these type of podcasts are usually interesting to me. However, if you're going to be saying things like "pretend I'm a middle aged white man drinking water" then call the water spicy I'm immediately uninterested in anything you have to say afterwards. If you are a POC and say something racist you are part of the problem. If a white man were to say pretend I'm a black man and say something stereotypical about a black man that is just as racist as a Latina women saying white men think water is spicy. Racism is wrong no matter where the privilege lays. Want Racism to end? Stop being racist yourself.

As a former Angeleno I am grateful to hear first hand account of the real story of the LAPD and the calculating faux progressive politician that is Eric Garcetti. Kills me he is spinning it for political benefit when he only cut the LAPD to just less than 50% of the city budget after raising it by 7%. Even on climate he wants constituents to organize a parade for him to lead before he does anything. He's a self interested coward with the biggest protests in the country outside DC, no more.
