great conversation with Mik Artistik, Discussing confidence in releasing art into the world , thinking on your feet, Writing a book before you die and Iggy Pop calling your song 'the best thing of the decade' plus much more. You Call That Radio has no adverts, no sponsors and no funding . Northern rock and roll stand-up comes close. Every show is unique as Mik finds a new train of thought to ride. He connects, chats, breaks the wall between audience and band, creates chaos, plays air-crook lock (!?), all complimented by exquisite layers of rock, soul, funk, and punk created by Jonny Flockton on electric guitar, drum machine, and one of a number of well-heeled bass players. . The band are regular Glastonbury favourites since their first appearance in 2007. Many fans don’t consider Glastonbury has started until they’ve attended either Mik’s gig on the Wednesday afternoon at the Croissant Neuf Bandstand, or the chaos that reigns at Thursday evening’s Rocket Lounge gig. Both are now Glastonbury traditions for many fans. They have achieved an enviable reputation at many of the major UK festivals, including Latitude, Bearded Theory, Beat Herder, Wilderness, and Beautiful Days. BBC Radio 6Music have long been playing Mik’s music with Gideon Coe, Chris Hawkins, Shaun Keaveny and Tom Robinson all big fans of the band. In early 2020 no-less than rock icon and 6Music presenter Iggy Pop endorsed Mik’s anthem of hope ‘Sweet Leaf of the North’ as his favourite song of the last DECADE! … In his words “… because it’s human, it’s real and it has soul“ https://www.mikartistik.com .
I recently found this band, The Tenementals, via the Lost Glasgow facebook page . The song was 'Owl of Minerva' and both the poetry of the words and the drive of the music grabbed me alongside a stunning animation video. They are launching an ambitious concept album about the radical history of Glasgow at the Oran Mor on November 27th that includes tales of fighting fascism alongside, early suffragette movement, Jimmy Reid and the miner strikes, the Poll Tax protests,  and the dark history of empire and slavery as well as celebrating the city's love for excess. The album, in either vinyl or digital format, can be pre-ordered from here: https://strengthinnumbersrecords.band... Album launch tickets are free but are limited and must be pre-booked from here in advance here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-te... As a tribute to Paul Wellings aka The Anti Social Worker, who sadly passed away in July, we have uploaded a classic interview from October 2022. Paul was an innovator of pirate radio, an NME writer plus released music with the Mad Professor (Massive Attack) . He toured with with reggae icons like Peter Tosh (Marley's partner) and Eek A Mouse; He's performed with Billy Bragg, John Cooper Clarke and Benjamin Zephaniah. A self proclaimed militant grime poet who dropped a lot of wisdom and cockney geezer charm every time he appeared on You Call That Radio's live streams.  Mixed and mastered by Maco.  YCTR  has no adverts, no sponsors and no funding . I had a sit down with PR machine and management mogul Andy Kettle (Steaming Kettle PR) who shared some brilliant advice about releasing music in the modern day and beyond. We also discuss his debut album 'Echoes of the Cosmos' under the Montao alias that boasts features from the likes of Slug (Atmosphere), Masta Killa (Wu Tang Clan), Sa-Roc and much more. Andy has over a decade of experience in promoting the likes of Aesop Rock, Rakim, Brother Ali, RA the Rugged Man, Kool Keith and worked with festivals such as Sound City to name just a few. We speak to London's coolest, new superband that boasts members, and former members , of  Fat White Family, Alabama 3 & White Devil Disco to name just a few. It's evil and eerie yet funky and danceable. They have dropped a demo called 'Blood' on youtube and soundcloud as a taste of things to come. Today we discuss A.I art, the pitfalls of drummers, How Alabama 3's Larry Love joined the band, the death of London's music scene, How star jumps cure stage anxiety, leaving Fat White Family, how sobriety affects creativity, fusing electronic music with guitars, love love records and much much more.  YCTR  has no adverts, no sponsors and no funding . As I post this audio podcast , Seas of Mirth have just taken to the stage in Glasgow as part of their UK tour . They make jazzy aquafunk and festivals love them with their giant octopus in tow wherever they go. I had an interesting chat with the captain of the ship, Al Juddy about touring, rival jellyfish, influences, Equinox Festival, submarines, nottingham, gargling water, Roberta Pia, Howdo Bean and the lure of Thailand plus much more. You Call That Radio has no adverts, no sponsors and no funding . The band’s sound has been taken to a new level on their fourth album Kriller. Recorded at London’s Total Refreshment Centre by producer Capitol K (known for his work with The Comet Is Coming, Flamingods, Alabaster dePlume) this is a deep-ocean inspired odyssey and various sub marine themes lurk within each of the ten linked tracks. With an extensive instrumental checklist, the sonic span widens into areas of psyche, dark funk, jazz, disco, ambient, latin, club beats and chime-pop. The prog-folk elements remain from their first two records, but this time around, comparisons have been made to the likes of Cardiacs, Stereolab, Talking Heads, Parliament/Funkadelic, Gong, Moulettes, Henge, Animal Collective and Frank Zappa. Live, there is a huge emphasis to bring the tunes to life in an enthralling sensory experience, made possible with big luminous sea creature props emerging through the course of the set, and various interactive opportunities for the crowd – this may even include a tug of war! Throughout the years, Seas Of Mirth have played at festivals such as Glastonbury, Boomtown, Bearded Theory, Bestival, Nozstock, Isle Of Wight, Solfest and Beat Herder as well as many UK and European tours to much acclaim.
On the eve of You Call That Radio's 5th birthday party at Room 2 , we chat with Hugh Reed of Glasgow underground legends Hugh Reed & the Velvet Underpants. Mixed & Mastered by Maco. I cut off the first half hour of the show (which you can watch on youtube) because I wanted to taylor it to the audio podcast ears but this isnt really an interview more like two friends having a chat , because Hugh has been on the video podcast umpteen times by this point. Towards the end Hugh kind of interviews me. We discuss the birth of YCTR, funding, touring in europe, Royston, shite jobs, Filming during gigs, the isle of Bute, Bad weather inspiring good music, getting bumped by promoters and much, much more. We also play music by his band, BRENDA and Gordy Duncan. Recorded in the middle of the far right riots across England , myself and Louisa (She Drew the Gun) had a somewhat subdued conversation to the backdrop of the hate ripping through the UK and even suprisingly in her hometown of Liverpool. I made a youtube video with my thoughts about all of that topic here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg7bF4w6egE&t We address the elephant in the room of course , but despite my thoughts being elsewhere at times I wanted for this conversation to be focussed on the music, which is why Louisa was invited on. We discuss writing, heartbreak, mysticism, weird coincedences, meditation and the album and forthcoming UK tour. SDTG have made some of my favourite records over the years and Louisa is one of the all time great songwriters to emerge from this island that can describe pain, love, politics, frustration and joy like noone else can. Thank you to the patreons who make this show possible at http://patreon.com/youcallthatradio . Today we go to New York to chat with legendary guitarist/ writer Grasshopper aka Sean Thomas Mackowiak of Mercury Rev fame. This is one of my favourite bands of all time . They came along at a pivotal moment for me as I started digging deeper for more underground records. I remember 'Yer Self is Steam' blowing me away with mixture of curiosity, fear and joy and it being the soundtrack to a very difficult time. They would later follow this up with two perfect albums in 'Deserters Songs' and 'All is Dream' that have never been off my playlists ever since. I have seen them live many times and it is an honour to speak with such an influential writer and performer with such an interesting back story . Their new album 'Born Horses' is out September 6th and they will play Glasgow on November 6th in Glasgow as part of their world tour. I have known Elliot Castro for many years through the clubbing/ party scene but it wasn't until I watched his new BBC documentary that I became aware of his incredible backstory that saw him in a 'Catch Me If You Can' style real life movie that saw him travel the globe in first class seats and 5 star hotels despite being skint and unemployed He was wanted by numerous police departments in various countries as it was estimated he had defrauded over 2.5 million dollars. The documentary is a gripping tale of how it got to that stage and the consequences and reflection of his actions. There is also a book that I haven't read yet.
