In Memory Of: Nathan O’Brien, Kathy and Alvin LiknesOn June 29, 2014, five-year-old Nathan O'Brien stayed overnight at his grandparents' home—Alvin and Kathryn Liknes—after helping with their estate sale. The next morning, Nathan’s mother returned to pick him up but found the house empty and signs of a violent incident. An Amber Alert was issued later that day, marking one of the longest in Canadian history.Despite extensive searches, the victims' bodies were never recovered. The case shocked the nation and highlighted the devastating impact of unresolved personal vendettas. To donate, please visit: https://buymeacoffee.com/youshouldbehereAll proceeds from Cases That Haunt Us will be donated the the volunteer organization: The Jason Landry Search TeamConnect with the podcaster:Instagram: @amillionotherchoicesYoutube: @amillionotherchoicesEmail: amillionotherchoices@outlook.comThis is a “Podcasters Give Back” series: Cases That Haunt Us from the women-owned Fire Eyes Media LLC network Email us jules@fireeyesmedia.comVisit us on Instagram @FireEyesMediaLLCSources:Nathan O’Brien, Kathy and Alvin LiknesCBC News. Cameron Todd WillinghamOn December 23, 1991, a fire tore through a small home in Corsicana, Texas, claiming the lives of three young children. Their father, Cameron Todd Willingham, escaped the flames — but within weeks, investigators accused him of setting the fire intentionally. In 1992, Willingham was convicted of arson and capital murder and sentenced to death, based largely on burn patterns and fire “indicators” that investigators believed proved intent.Years later, fire science would evolve — and with it came a reckoning. Leading fire experts reviewed the same evidence and declared the original conclusions not just flawed, but scientifically impossible. Despite growing consensus that the fire was accidental, Texas moved forward with Willingham’s execution in 2004.This is the story of how outdated science, prosecutorial ambition, and systemic indifference converged to execute a man whose guilt remains deeply contested. It’s a case that reshaped the national conversation on forensic reliability — and forced a painful question: what happens when the truth comes out after the verdict? To donate, please visit: https://buymeacoffee.com/youshouldbehereAll proceeds from Cases That Haunt Us will be donated the the volunteer organization: The Jason Landry Search TeamConnect with the podcaster:@CrimetoBurn on Instagram and TikTOkThis is a “Podcasters Give Back” series: Cases That Haunt Us from the women-owned Fire Eyes Media LLC network Email us jules@fireeyesmedia.comVisit us on Instagram @FireEyesMediaLLCSOURCES:Possley, M. In Memory Of: Marjorie DabneyEach year, more than 73 million travelers pass through Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, a massive hub with its own zip code, city designation, and police force. For most of us, flying can be stressful enough — from rushing to the gate to juggling carry-ons — but for those who are elderly or living with disabilities, the experience can be even more challenging. In late 2001, a woman with Alzheimer’s disease vanished during a layover at DFW. At first, it seemed like a heartbreaking case of a traveler who had simply wandered off. But when her body was later found, investigators realized this was not an accident at all. It was murder. To donate, please visit: https://buymeacoffee.com/youshouldbehereAll proceeds from Cases That Haunt Us will be donated the the volunteer organization: The Jason Landry Search TeamConnect with the podcaster:https://www.instagram.com/simplertimecrimepodE-mail: simplertimecrimepod@gmail.comYoutube: https://youtube.com/@simplertimecrimepodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@simplertimecrimepThis is a “Podcasters Give Back” series: Cases That Haunt Us from the women-owned Fire Eyes Media LLC network Email us jules@fireeyesmedia.comVisit us on Instagram @FireEyesMediaLLCSources:https://charleyproject.org/case/margie-louis-dabneyhttps://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/missing-woman-was-murdered/287-338775216https://www.cityoflewisville.com/city-hall/city-departments/police-department/pd-general-information/lewisville-police-cold-caseshttps://www.sfgate.com/news/article/mystery-of-vanished-alzheimer-s-patient-deepens-3258599.phphttps://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/haunting-mystery-of-alzheimer-patients-disappearance-death/https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-fresno-bee-still-searching-for-margi/147838226/https://www.newspapers.com/article/fort-worth-star-telegram-daughter-expand/147920179/https://www.newspapers.com/article/arizona-republic-arizona-republinc-margi/147920423/https://www.nytimes.com/2002/04/25/us/robbed-by-alzheimer-s-lost-by-an-airline.htmlhttps://medschool.ucla.edu/news-article/alzheimers-vs-dementia-what-is-the-difference#:~:text=In%20summary%2C%20dementia%20is%20an,own%20distinct%20causes%20and%20characteristics.https://www.newyorker.com/news/annals-of-inquiry/how-to-find-a-missing-person-with-dementia#:~:text=According%20to%20some%20estimates%2C%20more,from%20an%20otherwise%20familiar%20setting.https://www.alz.org/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/you-should-be-here--6405928/support.
SUSPCIOUS DEATH: Ellen Greenberg || Forensic Tales for Cases That Haunt UsIn Memory of Ellen GreenbergWhen 27-year-old schoolteacher Ellen Greenberg was found dead in her Philadelphia apartment in 2011—stabbed 20 times, including in the back of her neck—authorities ruled it a suicide. It’s not something you generally think about as you drive through your neighborhood. But this is exactly what happened to the Salomon’s on October 12th, 1982. Forensic evidence would be uncovered. In Memory of Lauria Bible and Ashley Freeman On December 30, 1999, a trailer home in rural Oklahoma went up in flames. Inside, investigators found the body of Kathy Freeman — shot to death — but her husband, Danny, and their teenage daughter, Ashley, were nowhere to be found. Outside the burned-out trailer sat a vehicle belonging to Ashley’s best friend, Lauria Bible, who had spent the night with her — and was now missing without a trace. What began as a fire scene quickly unraveled into one of the most confounding and heartbreaking missing persons cases in the Midwest. For nearly two decades, families and investigators chased false leads, rumors, and dead ends through a maze of small-town secrets and criminal networks. The brutal truth of what happened that night — and who took the girls — remained unanswered for years, delayed by investigative failures and the silence of a community that knew more than it said. This is the story of two best friends whose disappearance still echoes through Oklahoma — a case where justice was lost to infuriating investigative missteps for decades. But it’s also the story of a mother who never gave up, who still fights to preserve her daughter’s memory, and of two teenage girls whose legacy lives on in Oklahoma through new laws bearing their names.SOURCES:KJRH Tulsa. 25 years: Mother, community mark anniversary of Bible, Freeman disappearance. January 2, 2024. People.comKJRH Tulsa. Oklahoma's Cold Case Files: Lauria Bible & Ashley Freeman. May 8, 2025.People Magazine. Polaroids Prompt Arrest in 1999 Disappearance of 2 Oklahoma Teens.People Magazine. How an Overlooked Clue Cracked Open 1999 Murder Case More than a Decade After Teen Girls Were Killed. June 7, 2021. People.comMiller, Jax. Hell in the Heartland: Murder, Meth, and the Case of Two Missing Girls. Berkley Books, 2020.Sirens: A Southern True Crime Podcast. We examine the suspicious circumstances surrounding his murder, including an alleged fraud scheme, questionable behavior from those closest to him, and early missteps by law enforcement that may have cost investigators valuable time and evidence. From billboards and petitions to monthly emails to police, their pursuit of justice is as strong today as it was in 2003.📢 How you can help:Eric’s case remains open but unsolved. In 1981, Charlotte Heimann vanished from Rochester, New York just weeks before completing her Ph.D. She’d overcome incredible odds, survived a serious accident, and worked tirelessly toward a better life for herself and her daughter. LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED: This episode has crimes against children, listen at your own discretion. This case opens up such an important discussion to be had about in the legal system and ethics in crimes committed by children. In Memory of James BulgerThe case that continues to haunt us is the murder of James Bulger. What started as a normal shopping trip in February 1993 turned into every parent’s worst nightmare for Mother Denise Bulger. One moment her 2-year-old son James was right next to her as she paid for some groceries, & the next he was gone. Little did she know he had been taken by the hand by two boys who had intentionally set out that day to look for a victim. As a frantic search for James ensued, the youths were already leading him further away from his mother closer and closer towards a brutal & violent death. What was even more shocking is his abductors were only 10 years old.The two boys were caught & sentenced but spent just a few years behind bars before being handed new identities at the taxpayer's expense. People across Britain were outraged & the media openly expressed the uproar the lenient sentences had caused. With one of his killers Robert Thompson now free to live his life behind a secret identity & the other killer Jon Venables back in prison again for child exploitation offences, it leaves us asking important questions...Should child killers who were only children themselves at the time of the crime ever be freed to live amongst us? Or if a person is capable of killing at such a young age, then are they in-fact too dangerous to ever be released again? This is a case that was so heinous, so unbelievably wicked & cruel that it still haunts many of us even decades later as the nation continues to mourn for little James.Connect with the Podcasters:Links to Listen to Don't Blame the MomDBTM Instagram   DBTM TIK TOKE-mail : Dontblamethemom@gmail.com Sources:https://allthatsinteresting.com/james-bulger-caseBy Daniel Rennie | Edited By John KuroskiPublished October 27, 2023Updated November 9, 2023For All that’s interesting https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/james-bulger-murder-jon-venables-parole-b2446946.htmlarticle by Joe Sommerlad for the Independenthttps://amp.theguardian.com/society/2001/apr/27/socialcarearticle by Helen Carter for The Guardianhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_James_Bulgerhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirkbywikihttps://archives.knowsley.gov.uk/kirkby/history-of-kirkby/article for the Archive resources for Knowsleyhttps://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/dec/13/james-bulger-killer-jon-venables-loses-parole-board-bid-to-be-freed-from-jailarticle by Nyima Jobe and agency for the Guardian https://www.crimeandinvestigation.co.uk/crime-files/james-bulgerarticle for Crime and Investigation https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/robert-venables-james-bulger-parole-25263035article by Thomas George for the Manchester Evening Newshttps://publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld199798/ldjudgmt/jd970612/vandt01.htmwww.parliment .co.ukhttps://www.bbcselect.com/watch/untold-the-murder-of-james-bulger/Untold: the murder of James Bulger on BBC Selecthttps://www.9now.com.au/60-minutes/2021/episode-2360 minutes season 2021Ep 23 Unforgettable & Unforgivable https://www.crimelibrary.org/notorious_murders/young/bulger/3.htmlDeath of James by Shirley Lynn Scotthttps://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/reports/a43449502/maxine-carr-now/article by Chloe Bowen & Jade Biggs for Cosmopolitanhttps://www.birminghammail.co.uk/black-country/evil-killers-criminals-given-lifelong-27995520article by Amanda Bagdi for Birmingham Livehttps://www.securechildrenshomes.org.uk/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Bellhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soham_murders Wikihttps://www.standard.co.uk/hp/front/fury-after-james-bulgers-killer-jon-venables-had-sex-with-prison-guard-6385488.htmlarticle for The Standardhttps://www.theguardian.com/uk/2000/jun/06/alantravisarticle by Alan Travis for The Guardian https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/10943158/inside-abandoned-prison-james-bulger-killer-jon-venables/article by Nicola Stow for The Sun Newspaperhttps://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jan/20/james-bulger-murder-25-years-on-mother-denise-fergusarticle by Simon Hattenstone for The Guardian https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/robert-thompson-where-is-now-31433618.amparticle by Saffron Otter for The Mirrorthe guardian.com/ Wikipedia/ bbc.co.uk/ for James.orgBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/you-should-be-here--6405928/support.

SURVIVOR TERRI JENTZ || The Last Trip for Death Not Yet"Have you ever trusted the silence of a summer night?Believed that a warm breeze and the glow of your campfire meant safety? That the world would be kind - because you’re young, because you're doing nothing wrong.Terri Jentz did.In 1977, Terri and her college roommate, Avra Goldman, biked across America in search of freedom, adventure, and a little time to figure life out. They were students, dreamers - two women finding their place in the world. And then, one night in a quiet Oregon park, that journey turned into something unspeakable.A truck. A man with an axe. No motive. No warning. And somehow... Terri survived. This isn’t just a story of what happened that night. This is about what came after -the silence, the unanswered questions, the system that failed. And it’s about how Terri, years later, went back -not just to that campsite, but into the shadows of her own memory, determined to face the monster who tried to kill her."This is a Podcaster’s Give Back collaboration. SURVIVORS | JENNIFER MOREY & LISA MCVEYIn 1995, Jennifer Morey was attacked and stabbed in her Houston apartment by a security guard working at her complex. Despite severe injuries, she called 911 and survived. The case exposed major flaws in private security oversight and led to industry reforms. At just 17, Lisa McVey was kidnapped by a serial killer Bobby Joe Long. Lisa didn’t just survive, she outsmarted him. I go into detail, the harrowing ordeal, the clues she left behind, and how her bravery helped bring a murderer to justice. This is a Podcaster’s Give Back collaboration. SURVIVOR COLLEEN STAN || The Last Trip for Death Not Yet"Sometimes, the stories we tell here feel more like nightmares than real life.Stories of violence, of cruelty, of unimaginable control. But every once in a while, we come across a survivor whose strength redefineswhat it means to endure. In this episode, we’re traveling back to 1977 - to a quiet California highwaywhere 20 year old Colleen Stan made a simple, trusting choice to hitch a ride. What followed was a seven-year ordeal so disturbing,it shocked investigators, psychologists, and the public alike. She was held captive in a coffin-like box.Controlled, isolated, manipulated. But this isn’t just the story of what was done to her - it’s about what she did next."This is a Podcaster’s Give Back collaboration.
