In this episode we’re joined by Kat Dodds who shares one of the latest performative pieces by neoliberal daddy Justin Trudeau. Couldn't even finish the gig. Check out The Corporation, and now The New Corporation -- the unfortunately necessary sequel. Why are Kat and her colleagues suing Twitter and the Canadian government? As we like to do, we talk about the need to democratize social media, and we think about the opportunity to build power in the Movement through these tools (and new ones). How can we make it so that every person who wants to change the world can do so, and not just be a “clicker” behind a screen? And we know you’ve missed it -- Shelly is back with the Twitter roundup to talk about the feminist author to TERF pipeline. And just FYI - we can’t believe we have to say it but no one is saying you’re not allowed to say “woman”. This week Milly tells us about the disgusting institutional and direct violence facing Haitian Asylum Seekers. Extremely violent border patrolling is still authorized under the Biden administration who seems to be aspiring to Obama-era deportation numbers. Also, WTF is a Parliamentarian how do Dems use totally surmountable bureaucracy to avoid helping anyone. Oops they did it again. And Brad the human needs to simmer down and get a sense of humor, we think you’ll agree on this week’s Am I The Asshole. We spill the tea about the California recall. How we felt, what we did, and the powers that be (or don’t be). We talk about Gavin Newsom’s shit policy, particularly his lackluster offering to the many (English speaking) Californians who are houseless. We offer a quick 101 on the NIMBY/YIMBY situation and faux revolutionary housing “solutions” propping up the owning class. Bleh. We discuss why it sucks so bad that Newsom won by a landslide - this is why we can’t have nice things (healthcare for all). And of course, we tell a quick story about THE DRESS ;) -- actually no not that one, we don’t care. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/agitated-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/agitated-podcast/support
In this unique episode we introduce you to the concepts of corporate personhood and corporate constitutional rights. We get going by roasting a children’s book as a springboard to walk listeners through the basics of one of the most dangerous legal doctrines that ever existed. We discuss how corporations hijacked the 14th Amendment to use the constitution against us -- and make us pay for our own destruction. It’s a whole big thing that we’ll get into in much more detail in future episodes...but this is a little background info that’ll be helpful. And no episode would be complete without an acknowledgement of the clever ways neoliberalism uses “diversity” to uphold horrific economic and foreign policy. Listen up kids and grungies, we’re about to kill your heroes. Kaitlin’s dad made her watch a documentary and she’s all shook up. She tells us about some of the massive changes that happened in the short time when humans retreated last year. We bask in the awesomeness of how quickly Nature can begin to heal when humans back the fuck up for a minute. Glenn Greenwald is a bonehead and its annoying when intellectuals on twitter theoretically debate the terribly difficult choices parents have right now. What’s it like to send your kid to elementary school in a hellscape? Parents are in a terrible situation as a result of a failed government unable to manage this crisis. Truly kids, mama tried. And this week we play “Am I The Asshole” with some clever Karen-besting. And not to spoil the punch line but HOAs are always the bad guys, don’t snitch on your neighbors. Ben and Jerry’s (owned by Unilever corporation) performative corporate gestures. Milly yanks on the thread we’re pulling out for you - that corporations shouldn’t be the leaders of social movements (yes, even if it makes Israel mad). Jessica fills us in on the *massive* but largely hidden resistance to Line 3 -- Enbridge’s pipeline expansion proposal that would carry oil from Alberta, Canada to Wisconsin, USA, through untouched wetlands, treaty territories, Mississippi headwaters and to the shores of Lake Superior (Enbridge is a Canadian company responsible for the largest inland oil spill in US history). And Shelly leads us in a post-mortem of the July 24th March for Medicare for All #M4M4ALL -- how did Neo-Nazis and anti-vaxxers infiltrate this national day of action and what can we learn from it? This episode we’re talking about our serious agitation at the billionaire scum bags flying penisrockets to space for a giggle while the rest of us are just trying to feed our kids. Let’s touch base about exactly how much a billion, ok? We also talk about the history of US interventions in Cuba and what to do if you find yourself on the same side of the protest as the proud boys. Might you be an asshole if you spoil a few hundred McChickens? And then you get to meet George Friday, one of our favorite human beings. So settle in and unclench your butthole, we’re talking about white supremacy. George offers wisdom about organizing and witchcraft, and about how having a vision can keep us from going postal.  How does chronic oppression prevent us from accessing and making use of our power? How do we move away from the idea that there needs to be a hero in every story? How much is enough? It gets juicy.  Referenced in this episode: *Whitey on the Moon by Gil Scott Heron. *Raging Grannies *Highlander Center & Miles Horton *Poor People’s Campaign event July 2021 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/agitated-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/agitated-podcast/support
What’s agitating us? Kaitlin seriously has bee magic and it’s pissing off her neighbors. Shelly gives us the latest nonsense on corporate censorship and so-called progressives going to bat for g**gle’s constitutional rights. And may we offer you an absolute treat? The one and only Elle Stanger joins us to talk about sex work and decriminalization. We laugh, we cry, we learn, we remind you that red meat is bad for your boners. You’re gonna like this one. And back this week are two of our favorite segments! “Am I the Asshole” is back with some serious bird-related drama and Shelly gives us a quick rundown of the Olympic level Milkshake Ducks we missed on Twitter recently. We explore some of the political and personal events that radicalized us and share some of the moments and values that brought us to the point at which you are tuning-in :). As we reflect on the mindfuck that is class in the United States, we talk about our experiences -- some shared and some very divergent -- of being a Millennial under late stage capitalism. We also discuss bisexuality and how absolutely uncomfortable it makes people that we just won’t “choose a side”. What’s agitating us? The outright bullshit reasons some unions won’t support Medicare for All and are cockblocking its passage in New York. (THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS!) One union for all workers? We think yes. We also discuss the police training American cops are getting from the Israeli Army and have a “fuck yeah” moment about the Keystone XL pipeline. - XO Resources mentioned: *IWW.org - One big union *Minnesota Water and Land Defenders need our help - stopline3.org --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/agitated-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/agitated-podcast/support
We interview friend of the show Dr. Daniel Wayne Lee, longtime organizer, people’s politician, and activist and now vice mayor of Culver City, CA, on the merits and challenges to the inside/outside approach to systemic change. We talk about direct action and civil disobedience -- what distinguishes them from one another and why both are necessary. And of course, we learn what radicalized Daniel to choose this life of fighting tirelessly for racial, economic and environmental justice. What’s agitating us? We vent about the political + corporate corruption happening in the ranks of the European Union/World Trade Organization that will likely prevent the release of COVID-19 related patents, which would allow all nations to develop their own vaccines and therapies. We also go deep on the new Texas abortion laws, and what makes them even more barbaric than previous “heartbeat bills” we’ve seen -- and we discuss some of our own personal experiences navigating the reproductive healthcare system. And another Twitter Roundup of Zionist hijinks, brought to you by Shelly. Hosted by Milly Harmon, Shelly Williams, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, and Jessica Munger. In our very first Bonus Episode, agitated’s resident anti-Zionist Jew Milly Harmon frames out our discussion on Israel’s ongoing genocidal campaign against millions of Palestinians -- which is currently ramping up at a horrific clip, and with full-throated backing of the Biden administration. We discuss the history of the region, the Zionist propaganda in our media that has manufactured consent for these crimes against humanity, and the role that the the UK and US governments -- and their own geopolitical interests -- have played in the creation, maintenance and highly sophisticated militarization of this illegitimate settler-colonial ethnostate. We also talk about the rapid shifts in our culture that we’ve witnessed over these past few weeks. More and more everyday people (including many American Jews) are waking up to the realities of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and the deeply disproportionate power dynamics in the region. This is thanks in large part to the accessibility of information and footage on social media, and orgs/campaigns like Boycott, Divest & Sanction (BDS), Jewish Voice for Peace and If Not Now, who have been working on college campuses and beyond to challenge the dominant narrative and build the movement needed to end this apartheid. The fruits of that work are finally being seen in the halls of power -- for the first time, there are a handful of politicians in Congress naming it for what it is and speaking out against these atrocities, and U.S.’s major role in facilitating them. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for -- and it means we must keep pushing with all of our might to get us over the cultural tipping point, that is now within our sights. And finally, we discuss our own individual processes in unlearning the propaganda that has been fed to us over the course of our lives and how we came to reject the “it’s just too complicated” narrative, that has been effectively used to discourage exploration of the truth and silence dissent. Milly discusses their own birthright trip as an anti-Zionist, seeing firsthand the nature of a program intended to recruit young Jewish people to settle in Israel...and shares some shocking details of that experience with us that you won’t want to miss. We interview our friend and radical badass Eleanor Goldfield, about her new film “Hard Road of Hope” which documents the long history and current state of resistance and organizing in West Virginia against the rapacious coal mining and fracking industries that have all but destroyed their communities and the land that sustains them. We also go deep on the meanings and usefulness of words and labels, like “activist” and “anarchist”...and art’s role in revolution. What’s agitating us? The tension between all the good faith in humanity vibes that comes with successful mutual aid organizing efforts, but also the frustration of knowing that the support is only just temporary and not systemic; laws being passed in states to whitewash U.S. history and punish teachers who teach children the truth; and the existential horror that is the forever reality of plastic waste. Hosted by Milly Harmon, Shelly Williams, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, and Jessica Munger. A Democracy Unlimited Media Collaborative production. Special thanks to Jason Bayless and A Radical Guide for production support and Alfonso Saldaña for support on graphics. Transition music in this episode is from Eleanor’s EP, No Solo. May 1, 2021. Season 1, Episode 1 - Not Safe for Zoom. A quick dip into our ideas about what the fuck is going on around here, why this isn’t a Move to Amend podcast, conversations about accountability in a totally racist world, the importance of relationships that help us along, and our thoughts about the creepy asshole obsessing over a mannequin. What’s agitating us this week? Concentration camps for kids built on toxic waste sites, holier-than-thou tankies, and also a few particular 8th graders (and their parents). agitated. is a podcast for those who care deeply and are mad as hell. Education and inspiration to get you agitated toward action for a world that centralizes love and justice.  Antics included. Lots of us are feeling distrustful, and disillusioned -- for good reason -- and are looking for a down to Earth and informed analysis of what’s happening in our world that won’t leave us naive to the real deal, or feeling nihilistic and hopeless. Agitated is a show about systems, policy, history, and law and how they create and reflect culture. Hosted by Jessica Munger, Shelly Williams, Milly Harmon and Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap -- four femme friends and agitators who explore the intersections of culture, social movements, law, and politics all while caring deeply but not taking themselves too seriously. Educational. Inspirational. Actionable. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/agitated-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/agitated-podcast/support
