drdanflan's podcast

21st Century Faithquakes deals with fundamental issues of our time, usually from a faith perspective, but sometimes through the lens of theoretical physics, or social science or other disciplines. The podcast is an attempt to analyze and create discussion around basic questions of our life, and hopefully bring a better understanding of our future.

Called to Action

To be a faithful Christian, or even a faithful person, one must be committed to action, action which involves risk.  Such action is a personal decision but has tremendous consequences for solving the chaos of our time.

New Dimensions of Faith

Looking at faith through the lens of other disciplines helps to make the biblical stories relevant.  Theoretical physics offers the idea of dimensions through which we can see the primary focus of our faith, the resurrection, in a new way.  We grieve loss, but through understanding of the dimensions of God's creation, we can have greater hope in our future!

Second Mountain

Our nation, and yes, the world, is faced with division, especially the racism that has raised its ugly face since the death of George Floyd.  We have seen demonstrations for social justice not only in the US but world-wide.  This podcast uses the book Second Mountain by David Brooks as a call from individualism to community, a community based on social justice.

Leading from the Edge

Social Justice is an important moral issue.  Given the recent race related issues lately, the need to examine justice issues is critical.  This episode examines how Jesus approached justice issues from the edge (serving the most vulnerable) to the center (those with the most power).  Two Gospel stories are used as illustrations, showing our call and responsibility to begin with the most vulnerable.

Called to Change

When people talk about 'change' it's usually how to avoid it, or deal with it's consequences of anxiety and frustration.  In this podcast, change is considered desirable, in fact necessary in light of our understanding of a creator that is constantly creating, and calls us to partner in creating the future.
