Description
The iCantCU Podcast with David Goldstein shows the sighted world what blind people can do, which is just about everything sighted folks do. Think of the show as Blind People For Dummies.

In episode 271 of iCantCU, I talk about two state-level meetings I attended and the adventure of navigating a new train station without any help from Amtrak. First up was an OVR meeting where, despite being focused on disabilities, they had nothing accessible for blind folks—no Braille, no large print, nothing. Frustrating, but not surprising. I also attended a BEP meeting, where the training program has been on hold for over four years. It was disheartening to hear there’s no clear timeline for reopening, especially since blind people rely on these opportunities to run businesses. On the travel side, I figured out the Paoli train station on my own, got to Harrisburg, and had a much better hotel experience than last time. Plus, I talk about my fantasy football leagues (still holding on!) and preview the upcoming NFB of PA state convention in Erie. It’s a packed episode, so stick with me, and as always, thanks for listening! In this episode of iCantCU, I discuss my frustration with an app for doing a music survey from Alt Nation on SiriusXM. Generally speaking, the app was probably about 70% accessible. However, the most important part was not. You've got to hear the song to rate it. If you can’t find the play button, you can’t listen. This is not the only app that has accessibility issues, and I'm not the only blind/visually impaired person to have trouble using accessible apps. That is why I am looking forward to Washington Seminar in January. This is part of our agenda when we go to lobby Congress. In this episode of iCantCU, I catch you up on where I’ve been and dive into some pretty unbelievable questions I was asked by a healthcare professional—like how I get dressed, not what I wear, but literally how I put on clothes. It’s troubling when educated people in healthcare still hold such misconceptions about blindness, and it reminded me of battles NFB members continue to face, including parents losing custody simply because they’re blind. I also share lighter moments, like Ziggy’s obsession with his giant Christmas pickle, a fun crab feast in Baltimore, and my trip to the Hiram G. Andrews Center in Johnstown. With the Pennsylvania state convention right around the corner, things have been hectic, but I’m still squeezing in events in Pittsburgh, New York, and the Lehigh Valley. Plus, I tested out some sunglasses while recording—let me know what you think! In this episode of iCantCU, I’m finally back after a month and diving into the Ally Solos—new smart glasses from Envision designed specifically for blind and low-vision users. Unlike Ray-Ban or Oakley Metas, these aren’t built for social media first. They won’t shoot video at launch, but they’ll capture photos and focus on accessibility features that actually matter to us. The presale had me tempted, and even though I held off because of past bad experiences with uncomfortable frames from other brands, I may still give them a try with their 30-day return policy. I also share some of the frustrations I’ve had with my Ray-Ban Metas—like constant notifications interrupting conversations, calls bouncing between devices, and unpredictable dictation. While the glasses can be fantastic when they work (like helping me confirm my Harrisburg train at 30th Street Station), those quirks make me eager to see if the Ally Solos can do better. Beyond tech, I talk about what’s been keeping me busy: prepping for the NFB of Pennsylvania State Convention in November, handling a major website migration, attending the Mid-Atlantic Student Seminar, and even dealing with a broken cane. Plus, I fill you in on our upcoming scholarship raffle and ask your thoughts on whether sunglasses during video episodes would throw you off. In this episode of iCantCU, I talk about the new Oakley Meta smartglasses and why, despite the hype, I’m holding off for now. The camera’s not centered like I’d hoped, and they still only shoot vertical video—great if you’re all-in on Instagram, not so much for YouTube. The recording time is a win, though: 30 minutes vs. just three on the Ray-Bans. But if the Oakleys don’t wrap around like my standard pair (which helps with glare), I’m probably not interested—unless they start shooting horizontal video. I also dive into my trip to New Orleans for the NFB national convention. Let’s just say the travel there started with a missing wallet and at the convention, almost everything that could go wrong, did—from tech issues to accessibility frustrations to a basement flood back home. There’s also a PSA for allies: if you’re helping someone blind or low vision, ask before jumping in. Don’t assume. And don’t hand my boarding pass to someone else. Finally, we're selling raffle tickets to fund the NFB of PA scholarship program. $5 could win you up to $100—and helps students who need it. In this episode of iCantCU, I’m trying something completely different—an audio-only format recorded while walking laps around my house. I talk about the frustration of unreliable audio description devices at theaters and why it’s such a barrier for blind patrons like me. I also share how my recent Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses videos on YouTube outperformed anything I’ve done before and preview an upcoming video on the new Oakley Meta Smart Glasses. Inspired by other podcasters, I’m hoping this low-tech, low-barrier approach helps me put out more episodes, more often. Let’s see how it goes!. In this episode of iCantCU, I discuss two major audio description failures—one that’s on me, and one that’s simply unacceptable. The first happened when I was at the NFB National Center in Baltimore for the IEP Advocacy Academy. I shot a Federation Focus video to show what it’s like there, but I totally missed the mark on describing some of the visuals. Thanks to Auphonic’s amazing processing, it cleaned up the audio so well that it actually removed sounds people needed to hear—like a ball rolling in a game and doors opening. So, blind folks watching had no idea what was happening for parts of it. My bad. The second fail? A company presented at an OVR meeting and played a video with zero audio description. Just music. No clue what was on the screen. And this was in a room full of people with disabilities—including blind folks. Totally missed the point of accessibility. In this episode, I recap my trip to Las Vegas for the NFB of Nevada State Convention—part learning, part getaway with Liz. As chair of the upcoming Pennsylvania convention, I wanted to see how other states run theirs. Nevada’s was short but packed, and I took notes, especially on their use of breakout tracks and Family Feud. Liz and I also hit In-N-Out Burger twice and even saw Michael Symon at his BBQ spot. Navigating the hotel-casino was tricky, and I share some challenges, especially solo ones. The Meta smart glasses I wore were a game-changer for identifying signs and surroundings. We capped off the trip with a frustrating movie experience—the audio description device failed again. Still, it was great getting away and gathering ideas for our Harrisburg event this fall. If only In-N-Out would come east! Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/285 Links Mentioned (product links are affiliate links so that I may earn a commission.) White Canes Connect Podcast Episode 135 In episode 135 of White Canes Connect, Lisa Bryant and I welcome Martha Steele and Natanya Sortland to spotlight the inaugural Blind Birders Birdathon. This nationwide event invites blind and visually impaired individuals to identify birds by sound during a flexible two-hour window within a 24-hour period. No birding experience required—just a love of listening. Martha, a lifelong birder from Massachusetts, was inspired by an article about a blind bird guide and helped launch the event to build community and highlight that birding is, above all, an auditory experience. Natanya, an ambassador for VisionCorps and a self-described "bird-loving beginner," is leading a group walk in Malvern, PA at Brightside Farm, with expert Rick Kaiser guiding participants through the art of bird song recognition. In episode 284 of iCantCU, I talk about another hiccup with my psoriatic arthritis meds—this time, the pharmacy wanted over two grand out of pocket. Spoiler: I said no. Taltz has helped a bit, but not $2,000-a-month helpful. So now I’m back on the hunt for something else that won’t break the bank or mess me up with scary side effects. I also share some sad news: we lost Stan Ingram, a fellow blind entrepreneur in the Business Enterprise Program here in PA. That means one less BEP operator and a big question mark about what happens to his spot. Plus, my friend Ken’s dad passed, and I send love to his family. It’s been a rough week. I share the fact that my other podcast, White Canes Connect, is currently ranked #19 on the 100 Best Visually Impaired Podcasts! So much for the false rumors being spread about the show. In this episode of iCantCU, I talk about my recent trip to Baltimore for a National Federation of the Blind leadership seminar. The travel down was rough—high winds, delayed trains, and a soaked suitcase—but once I got there, it was an incredible few days. I met fantastic people from all over the country, learned a ton, and left feeling inspired (and maybe a little intimidated) by how sharp some of these folks are. I also get into how the trip lit a fire under me to do more back home in Pennsylvania. That’s where Federation Focus comes in—a new weekly video series I started to keep everyone updated on what’s happening in the affiliate. I walk through how that came together and all the other NFB-related stuff I’ve been working on, from graphics to fundraising letters to podcast editing. In this episode of iCantCU, I share a jaw-dropping moment when the director of a Pennsylvania state agency called me a four-letter word. Yes, really. It all ties back to my ongoing fight for transparency and inclusion in the Business Enterprise Program (BEP), which provides blind entrepreneurs with opportunities to run vending and food service businesses on government properties. Despite promises of reopening the program, Pennsylvania hasn’t trained a new blind vendor in over five years. With the number of operators dwindling from 200 to just 20, and many nearing retirement, the program’s future is in jeopardy. I break down the bureaucratic roadblocks, potential conflicts of interest, and the resistance to allowing public attendance at key meetings—including my own. I also discuss the upcoming PA Association of Blind Merchants Spring Fling on May 17 in Harrisburg. It’s a chance to support blind entrepreneurs, network, and raise awareness. Tickets are available now! Blind entrepreneurs exhibit opportunities and sponsorship opportunities are also available. See all the links below in the Links Mentioned section. In this episode of iCantCU, I recount my journey to Washington, D.C., for the annual National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Washington Seminar. I share insights into the event’s purpose—advocating for policies that support blind Americans—and my meetings with congressional representatives and senators. I detail the structured meetings, including conversations with Senator McCormack and staff from Senator Fetterman’s office, emphasizing the importance of protecting hard-won rights under laws like the ADA. I also reflect on travel challenges, from navigating train stations to nearly getting on the wrong train to trouble with taxis. Despite not feeling my best, I make the most of the experience, participating in legislative discussions and a reception in the historic Kennedy Caucus Room—where Titanic hearings were once held. I also dive into personal highlights, like my long-awaited trip to Oohh's & Aahh's for mac and cheese, only to find my taste buds uncooperative due to illness. Wrapping up, I reflect on the importance of advocacy. Join me for a firsthand look at what it’s like to be part of the fight for accessibility and inclusion. In episode 280 of iCantCU, I share my experience traveling to New York City for Jane’s apartment settlement. I reflect on navigating the subway, offering reassurance to those hesitant about using public transportation. Drawing from my father’s advice—"Be careful, but don’t be afraid"—I encourage everyone to embrace new challenges, whether in travel or life. I also detail my visit to Jane’s studio apartment, describing its compact yet functional space in a desirable building. Post-settlement, we explored the city, visiting Grand Central Terminal, Fifth Avenue shops, and indulging in delicious food—including a memorable trip to Salt & Straw for ice cream. Beyond the trip, I touch on my recent participation in an accessibility panel and share insights on the importance of confidence in mobility, particularly within the blind community. To be clear, though, the person afraid of the subway is fully sighted. Tune in for a mix of travel stories, personal reflections, and valuable accessibility insights. I highlight the incredible support I received from volunteers and attendees, including a helpful staffer named Hunter, whose mother, Wendy, played a key role in pre-event planning. I describe my challenges in the exhibit hall due to noise and crowd density, my enjoyment of the sessions, and memorable networking encounters, including a conversation about podcasting with AI and public speaking opportunities. A humorous moment came when I received a $5 Wawa gift card—a nod to the convenience store's origins near my Swarthmore home. This episode underscores the sense of community at PodFest, offering inspiration and practical tips for navigating events as a visually impaired attendee. In episode 278 of iCantCU, I start off with some good news from the fantasy football world. Out of the three leagues I played in this year, I won two championships, including the NFB Students fundraising league with my team Ziggy FC. Yahoo’s fantasy sports app, while not perfect, is a standout example of accessibility done right. Unfortunately, not every organization gets accessibility right. I also talk about AbilityLinks, a job site for the disabled community. Their emails included a QR code with critical information, but it wasn’t screen-reader-friendly. For an organization that claims to serve the disabled, especially when blindness is considered a disability, this felt like a real miss. It’s frustrating, and I wonder why they didn’t just use a simple link. On the personal side, I’ve been working hard to migrate my website, iCantCU.com, to a new host. Along the way, I rediscovered some old email accounts, including one I’d set up for restaurant coupons. It’s funny to think about how much has changed since I started using the domain nearly 19 years ago. Looking ahead, I’m heading to PodFest in Orlando, my first since 2020, and then to Washington for the NFB’s Washington Seminar. I’m excited for what’s to come—stay tuned! In this packed episode of iCantCU, I dive into holiday highlights, culinary adventures, and upcoming plans. First, I share my experience attending a French macaron-making class with Liz and Jane at Sur La Table. While the process was visually intensive, the instructor, Elliot, made it incredibly tactile and inclusive for me, which was both surprising and heartwarming. Though I’ll never make macarons solo, it was a fun and memorable family activity. I also recount the hilarity of Ziggy’s new oversized Christmas pickle toy—a three-foot plush he’s been dragging around the house like a proud pup. Seeing his excitement brought back the joy of giving. What Christmas isn’t complete without Nazis? I tell the story about what Jane’s friends spotted in the image of me and Ziggy. Spoiler alert: it was the shadowbox with my dad’s POW papers and the spoon he ate with while being held by the Germans in World War Two Looking ahead, I discuss plans for the 2025 NFB State Convention and my goals for expanding creative projects. This episode celebrates family, community, and the joy of meaningful experiences. In this episode of iCantCU, I share my experience traveling to Harrisburg for the Blind Merchants Holiday Party and fundraiser, reflecting on the challenges of navigating public transportation as a person with very limited sight. Timing was a major hurdle, from the unpredictable delays with CCT to coordinating a group of 17 people on an Amtrak train. I discuss how small inefficiencies can snowball, highlighting the importance of time—our most precious resource. Once in Harrisburg, the event was a success, with 65 tickets sold, great food, a DJ playing festive music, and lively auctions and raffles that raised over $6,000. I was impressed by how smoothly everything ran, despite a few hiccups, like managing auction payments and losing a check. I also recount some funny moments, like my guide dog encounter with a cracker I dropped and the dictation mishaps that never fail to amuse (or frustrate). I wrap up by reflecting on the importance of accessibility and time management while balancing humor and frustration. The fundraiser was a rewarding reminder of what our community can accomplish, even when obstacles arise. In this episode of iCantCU, I share highlights from the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania’s state convention in Erie and reflect on the experience of turning 60. The journey to Erie was an adventure in itself, with a nine-hour bus ride filled with trivia games, camaraderie, and the occasional logistical hiccup. Once there, I was happy helping others find their way around the venue and assisted with setup for various events. Despite challenges, the convention was a resounding success, featuring engaging presentations, a tech seminar I moderated, and valuable networking opportunities. I also discuss memorable moments from my milestone birthday celebration, which coincided with a meetup at Brauhaus Schmitz in Philadelphia. From a custom cake to great company, it was a special way to ring in a new decade. As I gear up to serve as convention chair next year, I reflect on lessons learned, including better organization and leveraging volunteers effectively. While Erie offered a stellar venue with outstanding service, its distance makes it a rare host for our conventions. Listen in for a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into organizing a convention and a bit about my plans for the future. In episode 274 of iCantCU, I dive into my experiences walking with a white cane while out and about and the pain it causes in my hands. While I enjoy getting steps in anywhere—whether recording a podcast or walking around my house or backyard —walking in a familiar place where I don't use my cane is much easier than where I need to. I discuss the difference between my lightweight Nigel cane for home use and my trusty Jackie cane for travel. It's all about adapting to different environments, from smooth supermarket floors to uneven sidewalks. Plus, I share my recent adventure at Eastern State Penitentiary's haunted attractions and a fun outing to New York City to attend Laugh for Sight. I also chat about the upcoming NFB of Pennsylvania state convention in Erie and some plans for the long bus ride. If you've got tips on easing the strain of using a cane, I'd love to hear them! The highlight of this episode is my visit to the Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion for "Lori Listens," hosted by PA First Lady Lori Shapiro. I, along with other members of the NFB of PA, got to talk about web accessibility issues with folks from the state. We gave feedback on a Commonwealth website and were surprised to see changes made almost immediately—proof that they’re taking our concerns seriously. I dive into the everyday frustrations we face when websites and apps aren’t accessible—like unlabeled buttons or pages that trap you behind pop-up ads. These things can make simple tasks take forever. But it felt good knowing that someone was listening and committed to improving things. What do I mean when I say an app or a website is not accessible? I give a couple of demos of sites that are not accessible and provide a workaround for one of them.
