Let's discuss the management lessons we can all learn from the bad guy Brad Wesley in the 1984 cult classic movie Road House. Believe it or not, he brings a lot of excellent management and leadership skills with him. I'm going to break them all down for you today. He utilized the following business development tools: work-life balance, delegation, strategy first, then action, working from a point of strength, getting your hands dirty, and doing what's necessary when it's necessary (within reason). Spoiler Alert (c'mon, this film has been out for three decades): Brad Wesley ultimately fails because his motivation (evil) and strategy (destroying all competition at any cost) are flawed. Don't fall into either of these self-imposed traps. Don't miss Pt1, the Business Process Management (BPM) lessons we can all learn from Dalton in Road House. Patrick Swayze plays Dalton, the newly hired head bouncer (called a Cooler) at a rowdy club that needs a turnaround. It's Saturday, I'm in the office, this is the Saturday Morning Hustle. Today, we revisit a long-lost episode of the Saturday Morning Hustle podcast that had technical difficulties and was never posted but it's a good, concise discussion episode you don't want to miss. A lot of people say they want success. They say they have to hustle. They say they have to grind. But do they really have what it takes to be successful at what they're trying to build? Do they have the patience, the forethought, the talent, and will they really hustle and grind, or do they think it's something easy like they see on TV? You have to bring something new to the market—something interesting, unique, or different about yourself and how you do what you do—something people can connect to. Everyone wants immediate success. Guess what? The world doesn't work like that. So, if you want to be successful, you'll have to build it. Nobody can just hand it to you. It's Saturday, I'm in the office, this is the Saturday Morning Hustle. After poling the #SaturdayMorningHustle fans on social media this week, you picked "I Take Cold Showers Because Thor Told Me To" as the topic of episode 361. But, this is not a conversation about physical fitness, ice baths or extreme challenges but instead is a deep dive into how you can achieve success via good habits, patiently formed over time, because of a simple change in attitude. "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right." You can determine your success or failure by addressing your attitude towards difficult or unpleasant tasks, applying new actions over time and allowing positive habits to replace negative ones. Let's talk about it on the podcast today. This one might go viral. Tune in next week for the 2nd place polling option "Management Lessons From Dalton (Patrick Swayze) In Road House" just in time for the remake coming out later this month. Nearly one week after the 2024 Super Bowl, let's talk about sports metaphors that can be used in any pursuit of excellence. Not lame "Layups" "Touchdowns" or "Game of Inches" metaphors but real wisdom from some of my favorite concepts, including... 1. Trust the process 2. Lessons learned from setbacks and losses 3. Never let the same team beat you twice 4. Creating a culture of winning 5. Ain't over until it's over 6. Teamwork and Sportsmanship. Bonus quote from a sports G.O.A.T. Muhammad Ali: "I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion. Don't count the days, make the days count." To commemorate the passing of a great person, a great Oklahoman, and a great American Mr. Toby Keith this week, we will discuss a few of his many admirable traits and behaviors that we can learn life lessons from. Specifically, let's talk about his authenticity, consistency and humility (common themes on the podcast) along with his focused approach (music business, songwriting or investing) to his career and his absolute dedication to helping others as much and as often as possible. As a bonus, we also talk about Toby's willingness to get out of his comfort zone and try new things for fun or to benefit others. This isn't a conversation about how to be successful in country music but in life. It's Saturday, I'm in the office, this is the Saturday Morning Hustle. A first-ever triple flashback to 3 episodes in January 2018 focused on productivity (plus bonus content) that also happened to be some of our most listened-to / downloaded episodes. 1/6/18 The Cure For Procrastination! The new year is the best time to make a plan, set goals and get to work. Too many people fall victim to their own procrastination. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, but the second best time is right now. You can't wait for the perfect time or scenario. You just have to go for it. Tips on how to get (and stay) started. 1/13/18 The Blank Page Theory. We discuss the process all creative professionals go through. Start with a blank sheet of paper. Write down where you are, point A. At the other end of the paper, write down where you need to be, point B. This can be used for creating art, design or solving a problem. Now, start adding to your point A. What do you have in place (assets), what are you trying to accomplish, why are you doing it, etc. Then, do the same for point B. What's the finished product? A painting, a brochure, a website, a better mousetrap maybe? Now, without preconceived notions or "how we've always done it" excuses start connecting A to B. This is the what, how, when, etc. in problem solving. Everything starts with nothing. No BS or reasons why you can't do it. Just work towards your goal. 1/20/18 Maximize Your Work Week. The best way to get the most out of your Monday through Friday 9-5 grind is to be prepared and organized. SaturdayMorningHustle is the perfect time to prep for the week ahead. That's what I do. Make your to-do list, set up your assets, do your research, etc... Come in early, stay late, on the weekend, etc. it's all up to you. Put the work in before the work. THAT'S hustle! Let's have a conversation about the elements necessary to create and manage a successful budget. There are four items you need to know. I call this your budget T. E. A. M. = Time, Effort, Attention, Money. You need all of these items to be managed correctly in order to properly manage a budget, execute on a budget and create the positive impact necessary to justify your budget. If you approach your budget in this way, don't just look at dollars and cents. Don't just do math. Don't focus only on money. We do that last. Focus on how much time can be allotted, how much effort can be applied during that time, how much attention is needed for that effort to be productive, and how much money will it take to start the process. How much money will it take to manage the process? How much money will we receive through the conversion process and how much money is left (profit). A top-rated episode flashback to 1/23/21 discussing top tips for building a legitimate brand for yourself as a personality, influencer or entrepreneur. Let's talk about things to focus on and things to avoid when crafting a self-brand. Specifically, building an audience authentically and organically by not buying followers or creating fake personas and avoiding the idea of "going viral" or becoming an overnight sensation online. Instead, patiently build a sustainable self-brand that can be developed and managed through audience feedback and consistent growth. Advice from the week before Christmas 2020 that's still very helpful. a week past #Christmas and just one day before New Year's Eve 2023 + New Year's Day 2024. The advice in this episode is NOT about #Hustle and #Grind but being focused on what's really important (proper motivation) and setting yourself (and everyone around you) up for real, sustainable success. The keys are staying motivated for all the right reasons, avoiding all the wrong motivations and understanding that success is a process not a destination. The best way to achieve success is by taking the right approach, having the right attitude and understanding how this process really works. That's what we're talking about today. Happy New Year! You have the opportunity right now to be the person you previously needed. Maybe when you were 15, 25, or even 40 you were looking for a mentor. You were looking for someone to answer questions. You now could be that person for someone else. You can be available to someone else. You can help others no matter how old you are, no matter how much experience you have, no matter your station in life. Whoever you are and wherever you are in life, you can benefit someone else who needs your experience and education, the opportunities you have seized upon and what you've learned from them. Most importantly, the lessons you have learned from your failures. That's right. When I say experience, I don't just mean the winning experiences but also the lessons that come from failures. We've all had more failures than success. I want you to know that. Everyone's had failures. Many people hear the word mentor, and it's intimidating to them. They think to themselves, I can't be a mentor because I'm not the world's best at something. You might think you don't need a mentor because you are highly skilled or have experience. Both of those are false assumptions. Anyone and everyone can be a mentor and anyone and everyone can be mentored because we're all at different parts of our journey of success. We all know different things, have learned different lessons and have things to offer to those who have yet to reach the levels we have achieved. Be the person you needed earlier in life. Be a great boss, be a great coworker, be a friend, be an example, be a mentor. Let's talk about it on the SMH podcast today! It's Saturday. I'm in the office. This is the Saturday Morning Hustle podcast. Listen while your competition is still sleeping. https://bit.ly/ListenToSMH --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/satmorninghustle/message
There's no worse regret than "I didn't know you did that." "I didn't know I could hire you for that." You have to tell people what you do for your job and profession, how you get paid, how you create value for others and how you help people with your professional services or products if it's something you genuinely believe in. This is not a sales pitch or a conversion process. This is not ABC "Always Be Closing". This is a value conversation, which is much better. Be brave enough to advocate for yourself, your business or brand. If you don't do it for yourself, no one else will. Talk about what you do or what you're working on casually, in an informational way. Be bold and talk about your business or side hustle. Talk about your goals. Talk about your band, art or social media account you're trying to build. Talk about a new degree you're working on because you want to change your career. Talk about things you want to do, get people involved, get people invested. Create relationships and then go from there with a potential for success. You know me, I'm Kyle Golding. I'm not just the guy behind the Saturday Morning Hustle. I'm also the CEO and Chief Strategic Idealist for The Golding Group, an award-winning think tank of strategic planning, business process management, integrated marketing and public relations consultants. We work with your leadership team to develop strategy, determine the most effective action plans, then execute and measure. We create processes, systems and protocols that can be measured, adjusted and repeated by incorporating data analysis, market trends and audience feedback in a two-way conversation. Tell people what it is you do. Tell people how it's different than other options. Tell them the value that you create. Tell them the audience you're looking for. Tell them who gets the best value out of your product or service, how you want to serve them, how you want to create for them, connect with them, build business relationships, etc... Explain these things to people, but not in a sales pitch. Don't try to sell it directly to them. Just tell friends, tell family, tell casual acquaintances. When you're networking or at a holiday event, when you meet someone and they ask, "What did you do for a living?" don't just say you're in accounting, legal, medical, business, consulting, etc... Tell them "I own a business; this is what we do. This is whom we serve." If the person listening finds value in that, you might have an opportunity, but they also might know someone or refer someone to your business. If you're going to be in business, if you're going to be a self-brand, if you're going to be a hustler, grinder or an entrepreneur, you got to be comfortable telling people who you are, what you do, the value you create, what's distinct about your business, what's good about doing business with you, why people should pay attention, why they should trust you. You have to be comfortable talking about it, not promotionally, not trying to make money, but being confident in what you do by connecting with people. Try to build relationships that eventually could lead to a business transaction. Put things in the correct order. Be confident. Be willing to do it for yourself, your business and your future success. Let's talk about it on the SMH podcast today! It's Saturday. I'm in the office. This is the Saturday Morning Hustle podcast. A #SaturdayMorningHustle Flashback to September 23rd, 2017. The key to business success is how you handle change. Winning comes from making small movements, not large pivots or failure to change at all. Business change can come from losing or gaining a client, losing your best employee or a new competitor entering your market. Do not overreact! Stick to your business plan, strategy and marketing tactics as long as you can until it's evident that you must make a change. The market will tell you when it's time for adjustments. When you do make changes, do it concisely and decisively. Winning at business means being able to handle change better than the other people in your space. Adapt and adjust. You can't be the "flavor of the week" and try something new all the time, but you also can't stick to "this is how we've always done it" and never make adjustments. Choose a happy medium between the two concepts.
Did you know this week was Global Entrepreneur Week? I attended multiple GEW events every day in Oklahoma City based on entrepreneurism about promoting, supporting and developing entrepreneurs here in Oklahoma as part of the GEW Global Entrepreneur Week. So today, I want to talk to you about the similarities, differences and misconceptions about what an entrepreneur is and what a business owner is, how they go together and how they are different. A lot of people confuse, conflate and misuse the terms “entrepreneur” and “business owner” as something that is synonymous with each other. They feel like it's the same thing, and that's not exactly true. There are some distinct differences. So let's go through that today. Obviously, a lot of entrepreneurs are business owners. I am an entrepreneur and I am a business owner. I started my first business when I was a teenager and I have continuously owned one or more businesses in the last 37 years since I started my first business at 15. When I started that first business, I didn't understand what being an entrepreneur was. I didn't know I was being an entrepreneur. I did not know what being entrepreneurial meant. But I eventually learned those things and now I have a really good grasp on what it means to be an entrepreneur. Let's talk about it on the podcast today! It's Saturday. I'm in the office. This is the #SaturdayMorningHustle podcast. Listen while your competition is still sleeping. https://bit.ly/ListenToSMH --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/satmorninghustle/message
I hate to admit it, but there are days I don't feel motivated. I need more inspiration to do great things. But it's better to press through anyway. A bad day at work or a bad day on your hustle and grind, a lesser workout, a less productive afternoon... Whatever it is, it's still better than not doing anything. A lack of motivation is temporary, but consistency is always beneficial. Just because you're not "feeling it" isn't a good reason to not do the work. Taking the first step is the most challenging part but the most essential. But you do occasionally need to take breaks and recharge that hustle battery. So, how do we balance all this? What does it mean, and why am I telling you this? Let's talk about it on the podcast today! It's Saturday. I'm in the office. This is the #SaturdayMorningHustle podcast. Listen while your competition is still sleeping. https://bit.ly/ListenToSMH --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/satmorninghustle/message
