Dan Blanchard the Best-Selling Author, Award-Winning Speaker, and Educator, as well as, two-time Junior Olympian Wrestler, and two-time Junior Olympian Wrestling Coach grew up as a student-athlete. However, Dan admits that as a youth he was more of an athlete than a student. Dan has now successfully completed fourteen years of college and has earned seven degrees. He teaches Special Education and Social Studies in Connecticut’s largest inner-city high school where he was chosen by the AFT-CT as the face and voice of educational reform and is now on the speaking circuit for them. Dan was with the team that put forth Connecticut’s new Social Studies Frameworks and is also a member of the Special Education Advisory Board to the Connecticut State Department of Education. In addition, Dan is a Teacher Consultant for the University of Connecticut’s Writing Project. Born in savlamar Jamaica, akeem didn’t have much of an advantage from the beginning, with limited options, and tragic events happening in his life, he moved to Canada with his mother seeking a better life. Falling back into tough times, his mother and him struggled to find stability, in a span of 5 months they moved 7 times to different homes and eventually found themselves homeless in the middle of winter time at the age of 13. Down but not out, with the help of some friends they were able to get back on their feet. Akeem started getting involved in sports, mainly football and track and field. Akeem excelled on the field and on the track and won many different awards. Years later he become an olympic medalist, an NCAA all american, and most importantly a graduate from the university of Alabama. Amanda had lost 100% of her hearing in both ears. All of a sudden, she was unable to communicate with the people around her. She did not know sign language, could no longer speak well, and could not lip read. She became isolated from the world and had to finally face her hearing loss, accept that she was deaf, and find a way to finish college without being able to hear. She found the strength to teach herself to talk well again, to lip-read, and to use sign language. As she was learning new communication skills, she also graduated from college and set out on an emotional rollercoaster ride to discover who she was and who she wanted to become. Join her on her journey to find a balance between the hearing world she was raised in and the Deaf culture she now belonged to.
