Repost of one of our most popular episodes from when we first started our podcast (and when it was called Shift)! Original air date: July 2018 In this episode we were lucky enough to chat with Sashah Ra. Lucky for a few different reasons. The first being she's an amazing womxn with a wealth of knowledge when it comes to social justice, the second being she was just about to embark on a year long journey working in Tanzania as a gender equality agent. We discuss the barriers that are stopping many social work organizations from serving those in need, in the best possible way. We explore why she has chosen to focus on youth throughout her career, and why she feels we need to invest more in them. As someone who is passionate about travelling Sashah breaks down the ways in which we need to explore, understand, and appreciate culture. Dissecting the difference between voyeurism and appreciation. Tune in to hear what you can do to advocate within your own community www.instagram.com/hellosashah/?hl=en medium.com/@sashahra/https-med…octalks-555de76b44e
So yeah, we chatted all about our feelings surrounding social media last episode. We felt like it was necessary to talk about that because the relationship between business and social media can be stressful at times and straight up draining from our experience. We'll take your word for it that you listened to the previous episode which would mean you're ready for some facts now! In this episode we wanted to give you a step by step on how to build your social media in a way that works for you. Whether you’re solo or have a team this is the episode for you if you're struggling with the gram these days. If you have any questions don't forget we have an OPEN DOOR every Friday at 12 PST @bakit.co or drop us a line via email info@bakit.co
Social Media Madness

Social Media Madness

2019-07-0950:56

Do business and social media go hand in hand? Is it possible to have a successful business without participating on social media? Wherever you are on your social media journey chances are there have been moments where social media have brought you anxiety, comparison, connection, clients and more feelings then we could list. So what has our journey been like since launching Bakit? We decided to break this up into 2 parts, because we thought it was important to talk about how social media used to make us feel, then dive into how we decided to make producing our content more easeful. When we launched it was straight up stressful, and pressure filled. Tune in to see what questions we asked ourselves and how we went from pulling our hair out, to appreciating the slow burn. We would love to hear your feedback on our episodes so if you’re enjoying it leave a review! Feelings coming in HOT. We’re taking a break from the skill and strategy talk to hash out how we’re feeling about things. To say we are deep diving would be an understatement, we’re known for our 5 hour long conversations about everything under the sun, especially how we FEEL about things. Since we can’t keep you for that long we touch on a few key things we’ve been feeling lately and how we’re working through it. Right off the top we dive into how we feel about being undefined in business, and the response that often gets from people. Of course the conversation evolves to letting go of control, allowing others to shine, and what the common thread is that ties our work together. We keep it unstructured and let the conversation go wherever it wanted to go. If your liking the feelings let us know. We’re trying to keep a nice lil balance of skill and feelings conversations because in our opinion business requires BOTH! (Sorry for the all caps but we feel passionately about it) www.bakit.co www.instagram.com/bakit.co
Well that's it folx! Thanks to all if you who were in it for the long haul we've officially wrapped up our pricing series. This was a long series, but we wanted to give space and thought to each aspect of pricing a product or service. In this last episode we explore what is actually applicable for small business owners in terms of analyzing market trends, as well as our internal conflict when it comes to what the market is currently doing. This episode is full of food for thought so we hope you came hungry. Don't be shy if you, send us an email if you want more info or have something to say about what we said. Tune in next week for some feelings on what we've been going through! If you're feeling like the written word is better for you, hit up our website and sign up for our email. www.bakit.co
We’re in the home stretch now in episode 5/6 on pricing your product or service. This week we wanted to talk all about figuring out who your competition is, and what to do with that information. It’s easy to get lost in the sauce aka an onslaught of google results when you search for who your competition is, so we wanted to share we how work through our community to find out who our competition is. If you haven’t noticed we tend to focus a lot on community, that’s because without them your business would simply not succeed. It’s important to always let the customers guide your decisions. After all you are solving their problems right? We share what some of our biggest missteps were when looking at our competition, and because we always want to share more we decided to give you some examples of how you too can overcome certain difficulties if you feel like your completion is unbeatable. Business is all about creative problem solving so we’re sharing some of ours. Hit up our newsletter for this weeks worksheet, we send them out every Wednesday! Click the link below! www.bakit.co Also we would love to hear your feedback on our episodes so if you’re digging it leave a review. We’re cruising right on through to part 4 “Market Positioning” when it comes to pricing your product or service. If you’re just joining us on our 6 part journey, WELCOME…. But also go back and listen to the first 3. Each episode we’re building on the previous one, because we really felt pricing is something that is worth digging into, but often not talked about. Marketing positioning is all about defining what your company and brand truly is, and subsequently where that puts it within the market place. Like everything we do we keep it simple, because why make things harder than they need to be? But also because once you have all the information, it’s really about doing your homework and listening to what your consumers are telling you (and doing because sometimes those two are different). We outline a simple graph and cover where common brands fall within it. We talk high price & high quality vs low price & low quality. Of course we couldn’t help ourselves and had to throw some thoughts in there about companies current pricing strategies and how the market is changing. As per usual this episode is accompanied by a worksheet that will help you uncover and position your brand within the market. It’s as simple as signing up on our website. Just click the link below and you can have the worksheet too! In an effort to make sure we can answer all of your questions we do a live every Friday 12 PST on OPEN DOOR. https://www.bakit.co/
Hello Fellow Entrepreneurs and Happy Monday (We know Mondays can be rough, but at least you get to look forward to more EPISODES right?) Can you believe we’re on part 3/6 of our Pricing Your Products or Services? So far we’ve been able to cover 1. Who Is Your Customer? 2. What Is Your CPU? Today we cover pricing based on what your goals are as a business. Although it may seem weird to take that into account when pricing your goods and services we highly recommend it. You need to consider where you want your business to go long term. A 25 cent increase compounds over time. That could end up being enough money saved to buy new equipment, hire someone, or whatever is going to take you to your next level. We say “your” because although we’re giving you steps on how to properly price at the end of the day it has to work and feel right for YOU. We’ll break down how to write proper goals, how the pricing ties into your final price, and finish up with some of our own learning lessons. As per usual each episode in this series is accompanied by a worksheet. Don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter, we send them out each Wednesday with a link to download the corresponding worksheet. Head on over to our website to sign up. https://www.bakit.co/ If you ever have any questions, get in touch. We answer all of them every Friday @ 12 PST on our IG Live aka “OPEN DOOR”. Happy LISTENING and LEARNING friends x Sara and Mal
In this weeks episode of Conference Call we discuss how the hell one calculates their own CPU? Now if you're feeling like you don't even know what CPU is, don't think this episode isn't for you. CPU is cost per unit and we give you the low down on how you can figure it out for yourself. We're not accountants but were here to make business and numbers feel WAY WAY more approachable. So often new business owners make the mistake of looking to the market when it comes to setting their price. Unfortunately that's only one piece of the pie. Were going to cover fixed and variable costs, and while that sounds like a snooze fest we give you all sorts of great tips and tricks that will keep you awake and better yet ready to dig into your own numbers. Happy listening, and don't forget each episode comes with a worksheet. Head on over to our website where we send them out each Wednesday! https://www.bakit.co/
Part 1 of a 6 part series where we deep dive into how to price your product or service. Why the insane 6 part series? Pricing your stuff isn't as easy as you would think. You need to take a lot of things into consideration. As we're saying this we realize that sounds very daunting, but that's why we broke it down into 6 bite size episodes for you! In this episode we're covering why understanding your customer is so crucial when it comes to how you're pricing your product. Of course no episode is complete without us sharing some of our biggest learning lessons. Oh and one last thing... We decided to create a worksheet that coincides with this episode so you can do the work while listening. Now that's just plain fun if you ask us. Happy learning and if you ever need any help don't hesitate to reach out! Head over to our website and sign up for our newsletter! https://www.bakit.co/

Did You Miss The Call?

Hello World! We're back, and we're officially called Conference Call. Why the name change? It's simple, we're letting you in on our meetings. All for the sake of transparency we decided to pull back the curtain and let you see how we build Bakit as well as our other businesses. No one likes being told what to do (especially entrepreneurs. We make our own rules right?). So we decided to share instead of telling. The good, the bad, the ugly and most of all our STRATEGY! So tune in every week for new stories and insights. You ready to hop on the call?

Who is dropping some knowledge on you this week? None other than Kate Horsman! Kate is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Food Psych, and natural foods chef. Yes, she knows what she’s talking about. However, it’s her life experience that has been her biggest teacher. In this episode we uncover which difficult lessons led her towards nutrition and psych, away from her dance background. We round out the episode by discussing how we can all improve our relationship with food. Tune in for easy to implement tips, and amazing insight. https://katehorsman.com/kate-horsman/ https://www.instagram.com/katehorsmannutrition/
We are so delighted to share this episode with you! We sat down with Elim Chu and discussed what it means to be a conscious consumer. As a freelance stylist and consultant Elim chooses to focus on where your clothing comes from, but more importantly how you feel in that clothing. If you know us at all, you know we couldn't just stop there! We talked about what it's like being in an interracial relationship, how to educate and advocate for causes, and how she is currently processing all of her new learnings. Tune in and check it out, this is a must listen! http://www.elimchu.com/ https://www.instagram.com/elim_chu/
Lindsay Pleskot is our guest this week on Shift—she is a registered dietician, creator of the 3-2-1 Method (see her website for more information), and an all around intelligent human. This episode we talk about the difference between a healthy and unhealthy relationship with food, diet guilt, reframing eating into an enjoyable experience, mindful eating and more (yep, there’s a lot on eating here!). Lindsay also shares some personal experiences, and how to transform loss into a positive learning and growth moment. We’re excited to share this one with you! www.lindsaypleskot.com www.instagram.com/lindsaypleskot
What is Fatphobia? Simply put it's the fear or dislike of fat people. As a society we have been told what beauty is and subsequently what your worth is based on that. In this episode we dive into how we can break the cycle and redefine what beauty really is. Our guest today is Victoria Welsby. She went from being homeless, abused with self esteem that was achingly low into a courageous (and confident) boss lady and body image activist she is today. When she's not changing the way women view themselves you can find her at University of British Columbia in her role as an Adjunct Professor. http://bampowlife.thinkific.com/courses/free-live-training-the-4-steps-i-took-to-go-from-meek-and-mild-to-courageous-and-confident?ref=721990 http://www.bampowlife.com/home https://www.instagram.com/bampowlife/
This episode we talk with Anita Cheung, the multi talented mindful maven. She is the founder of In Bed With Betty, and co founder of WOC talks, both amazing movements disrupting their traditional paths (and having fun while doing so). We chat all things mind-related, from mental health to meditation to the experiences of being a WOC in a world that is a lot of times exclusive. We also chat entrepreneurship, what the hardships and obstacles are that so many of us face. Anita gives some tips on how to continue to do you! https://inbedwithbetty.com/ https://woctalks.org/ Instagram.com/ineeeda
Our guest today is Dora Kamau. Don't ask her what she does in one word or sentence because it can't be done! Dora likes to say " I am one dope soul sharing my light and helping others find theirs" and we couldn't agree more. Our conversation flowed from mental health in the black community, the difference between mental health vs mental illness, what it means to act truthfully and honestly within your life, and how much wellness is too much wellness. It's no surprise we were able to cover so many topics with this self care connoisseur. Tune in and hear some amazing insight on what you can do to shed light on underrepresented and marginalized people within the mental health community, as well as some tips on navigating your own journey. Hopefully this can serve as a reminder for you to have some of these conversations in your own life. https://www.facebook.com/Bliss-Your-Heart-488804094839070/ https://www.instagram.com/dora_kamau/ https://www.instagram.com/blissyourheart/
We managed to snag some time with Linh Truong, owner of The Soap Dispensary and it’s sister store Kitchen Staples. Both shops are the first of it’s kind here in Vancouver, and carry almost everything you need to live a zero waste lifestyle (or even if you're taking small steps towards it) With a BFA in painting Linh spent most of her adult life doing jobs to support her art. Having always been a conscious consumer, she naturally fell into this type of work. We talk all things environmental, conscious consuming, and of course her journey with entrepreneurship! If you haven’t checked out The Soap Dispensary run don’t walk! https://www.thesoapdispensary.com/ https://cleanbinproject.com/ https://www.vox.com/
We’ve all overspent even when we know it will have negative consequences. “What The Finances” guru Chantel Chapman is here to dig deeper into why we spend the way we spend. In this episode Chantel shares her own financial journey. From her early start as a mortgage broker, all the way to the financial literacy coach she is today. She has spent the last 14 years exploring the connection between addiction and finances to facilitate healthier relationships with money. Tune in for some amazing insights on how to decipher what type of purchase you’re making, and how to change your own narrative. We walked away with so many “AHA!” moments and we know you will too! https://www.whatthefinances.ca/about/ http://school.kastorandpollux.com/
