With the Academy Awards less than a month away, we're taking a look at one of the most interesting feckin' films of last year that has a lot to say about grief, friendship, and legacy; it's The Banshees of Inisherin from director Martin McDonagh. While we haven't discussed one of his movies since all the way back in Season 1 with In Bruges, we're back in familiar territory, and McDonagh has only gotten better as a storyteller. Grab a pint and kick your feet up with your favorite furry friend as we discuss the film, plus the troubles with tandem parking, how we - as a nation - allowed Larry the Cable Guy to happen, the acceptable cash limit for concert tickets, and so much more! The Banshees of Inisherin stars Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan. 2023-02-0601:52:44

We told you we'd be back, and we weren't lying. That's right; this week we're revisiting the one that started it all: 1984's The Terminator from director James Cameron. If you can even believe it, before he committed himself to the Pandorian dirt, Cameron was a pioneer of auteurism with his incredible ability to make a dollar out of pennies. Does this one stand the test of time? We'll find out. So get yourself a couple cans short of a six pack and put on your dark sunglasses cause we're dissecting the film and talking all about accepting fake city geography, Terminator iguanas, the '90s Doctor Strange movie, and a ton of other great topics with returning guest Josh Browning. 157 The Whale

2023-09-2501:23:28

After a much needed break, we're rejuvenated, refreshed, and ready to kick off Season 7. And what better movie to be energized to discuss than one where the protagonist sits on a couch the whole time? In keeping with tradition, we're discussing yet another Aronofsky movie for our season premiere, and this time it's 2022's The Whale. A powerful yet divisive film from Aronofsky, so there's certainly a lot to talk about. So grab some KFC and kick up your feet as we discuss the movie, plus the incredible return of the great Brendan Fraser, the fallacy in logic with Jehovah's Witnesses, recasting this movie with the leads of Succession, and much, much more. Episode 148: Men

Episode 148: Men

2023-01-2301:03:17

Alex Garland is known for very cerebral, thought-provoking screenplays, and while 2022's Men are both of those things, the film (frustratingly) doesn't seem to commit to anything in particular. That being said, this one has a lot to offer; beautifully haunting atmosphere, a powerhouse performance from Jessie Buckley, and a score that's out of this world. We'll discuss all of that and more, including wine moms drunk at the movies, the horrors of staying at an Airbnb, poor TV placement on furniture, and other seemingly benign topics.Men stars Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear, Paapa Essiedu, and Gayle Rankin. Hey...you wanna see Paul Rudd's pubes? Well, you've come to the right podcast! That's right, this week we're taking things back to 2003 with the abhorrent The Shape of Things from director Neil LaBute. Never heard of this one and want to watch it? Good luck; the movie has been lost to time, it seems. But don't worry, dear listener; we're here to tell you all about it, and this is one you probably don't need to see. So put on your reversible jackets and grab your Jones Cream Soda because we've got a lot to discuss, including Neil LaBute's apparent issues with women, the problem with art students, and the return of the Dorito's discussion. All of this and more with your hosts Dustin, Mallie, and Jathan, plus returning guest Ashley McGlothren! You can check out Southern Haunts and Oh, That’s a Scary Movie on Apple Podcasts or wherever get your podcasts. The Shape of Things stars Paul Rudd, Rachel Weisz, Gretchen Mol, and Fred Weller. 2023-01-0901:15:52

This week on the program, we're granting the wishes for those of you who want more schlocky horror movies covered on the show. This time it's none other than 1997's Wishmaster. Candyman, Jason, and Freddy all starring in the same flick? Well...sort of. Tune in as Dustin and Nathan choose their words carefully while they discuss the movie, plus the worst name to yell when you're panicking, what defines a "wish", the struggles with becoming a GMILF, and more callbacks than you can shake a stick at. If we say we have a great episode for you to kick off your 2023 with, you will agree. While you're out there working on your New Year's resolutions, we'll be in the derricks discussing 2007's There Will Be Blood. It's still (unsurprisingly) one of the greatest films of all time and deserves a rewatch. So lace up your old boots and grab your milkshakes cause we've got a lot to discuss, including the inherent problem twins must have faced in the Old West, debunking dumb fan theories, choosing a side in the battle between this film and No Country for Old Men, and much, much more. Drink it up!There Will be Blood stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Kevin J. O'Connor, Ciaran Hinds, Dillon Freasier, Sydney McCallister, David Willis, David Warshofsky, Colton Woodward, Sunday Colleen Foy, and Russell Harvard. Episode 144: Batman Returns

2022-12-2602:00:44

Even though we're officially beyond Christmas, you've still got one last present to open from your friends at The Silver Linings Playlist. What better time than now to discuss the "forbidden" Batman movie? That's right, we're diving into 1992's Batman Returns from Tim Burton. This one's got it all: sleazy Danny DeVito, sexual Michelle Pfeiffer, and a sulking Michael Keaton. What's not to love? Let us fill your void as we discuss all the great moments in this jam-packed episode. Plus, topics on how a certain former president modeled his entire persona after Max Shreck, Mr. Freeze's secret cameo, the McDonalds Happy Meal tie-in fiasco, and much more are all waiting for you.Batman Returns stars Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Episode 143: 365 Days

Episode 143: 365 Days

2022-12-1901:27:54

We've covered some bad movies on this show during our 6-year run, but nothing has even come close to this. For the first time ever, we are asking - nay, imploring - you all not to watch this movie before hearing our episode (or even afterwards.) 365 Days is pure, unadulterated garbage, and not just in its poor direction and performances; it sets a dangerous precedent. With all that being said, we do our best to bring you the same energetic, fun, and silly podcast for your listening pleasure. So strap in as we discuss the paper-thin plot, plus why you can't make the beach sexy, AI generated music, getting Zapruder'd with a magic bullet, and a ton more. Again, please don't watch this movie.Warning: this episode covers the topic of sexual assault, Stockholm Syndrome, and other acts of domestic abuse. If you or someone you know is experiencing anything related to these acts, we encourage you to seek help. The National Sexual Assault Hotline can be reached 24/7 at 1-800-656-4673 and the National Domestic Violence Hotline can also be reached 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233.365 Days stars Anna-Maria Sieklucka, Michele Morrone, Bronisław Wrocławski, Otar Saralidze, Magdalena Lamparska, and Natasza Urbańska. If you can believe it, this week marks the 20th anniversary of the release of one of the greatest films of all time. We're of course talking about The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers from the great Peter Jackson. What more can be said about this movie that hasn't been said a thousand times over already? Well, apparently, we've got 2 hours’ worth of things to say. So grab your pipe-weed, mount your warg, and ride out with us as we tear into the movie along with discussions about where to put the one F-bomb in each film of the trilogy, Nancy Reagan's role in the film, our thoughts on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1, and a ton more. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Liv Tyler, Christopher Lee, Brad Dourif, and Cate Blanchett. The violence continues in our episode this week, but in a much less glorified way. That's right, we're back in Cronenberg Town as we crack open 2005's A History of Violence. While there's much less body horror to be found in this one as opposed to David Cronenberg's other works, there's still a ton of gruesome acts of...well, violence. So grab a cup of COFFEE! and settle in as returning guest Josh Browning from The VHS Files sits down with Nathan and Dustin to discuss the film, as well as our love for lemon meringue pie (as well as which one of us has never tried it), the pros and cons of 69ing, the Academy Award Winning Suicide Squad (it hurts to even type those words), and a ton more. You can check out The VHS Files on YouTube and Apple Podcasts.A History of Violence stars Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, William Hurt, Ed Harris, Ashton Holmes, Heidi Hayes, Peter MacNeill, Stephen McHattie, and Greg Bryk. How do you make over $140 million at the box office with only $7 million in your budget? You cast Elisabeth Moss against...well, nobody, and you put Leigh Whannell simultaneously in the writer & director's chairs and watch the magic happen - or not happen. This week on the show we're taking a look (or at least trying to) at the 2020 masterpiece that is The Invisible Man. This is the quintessential example for remaking a classic with modern sensibilities. How big can Aldis Hodge's muscles get? What if The Invisible Man has to sneeze? Did they really leave Zeus the dog in this abandoned house for weeks? All of those questions and more are answered here, so slip into something comfortable while Mallie and Dustin talk about their favorite parts of the film, as well as what a $120,000 ladder would look like, the poor man's gourmet buffet, why west facing windows are terrible for your home, and much more. By the way, has anyone seen Nathan? The Invisible Man (2020) stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Elisabeth Moss, Storm Reid, Aldis Hodge, Harriet Dyer, and Michael Dorman. It's Thanksgiving week, so you know we gotta talk about family. And what better franchise to do so with than the one that is now synonymous with family. That's right, we're of course talking about the one that started it all: The Fast and the Furious from 2001. A Point Break remake that has it all: girls, guns, and a glistening Vin Diesel. So buckle up and injest this episode right into your veins like Nos in a cheap Mitsubishi as Nathan and Dustin discuss everything from the outrageous price for a 6 pack of Corona nowadays, the insane subtitles used on Amazon for the film, the poor decision of naming this drag racing competition "Race Wars", and much much more. The Fast and the Furious stars Jordana Brewster, Rick Yune, Michelle Rodriguez, Paul Walker, and Vin Diesel. There's two things you need to know about our show; we're the king of podcasts, and number two is LOOK OUT, man! This week's episode is none other than the great Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story! No biopic since has been able to shake the comparison to this absolute classic; and for good reason - this movie is perfect and nails the formula in the best possible way. While we try our best to avoid falling into the trap of just quoting and retelling the funniest parts of the movie, buckle up for some insufferable Beatles and Elvis impressions. Much like Dewey reflecting on his entire life throughout the film, we'll reflect on all of the aspects that make this one of the best comedies of all time, as well as fascinating stories about Magic Alex, the worst prank to play with Christmas gifts, Dustin's absolute contempt for musicals, and much, much more.Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story stars John C. Reilly, Jenna Fischer, Raymond J. Barry, Kristen Wiig, Tim Meadows, Harold Ramis, and Chris Parnell. Our Spooky Linings month has sadly come to an end, but that doesn't mean the chills and thrills need to as well! So let's discuss a movie with some of our spooky residuals left over: it's 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (also known as Doctor Strange and the American Macguffin.) Kevin Feige lets Sam Raimi shine (for about 7 minutes) in his return to the MCU in this somewhat uneven sequel. Why is Doctor Strange regulated to being a supporting character to every other superhero, even in his own movie? We'll try our best to get to the bottom of it with returning guest John "Houzer" Smith. Plus, getting Michael Stuhlbarg's agent a raise, putting the screenwriter for Saw 3D on blast, Murder, Inc. Strange and the Book of Ashanta, and much, much more await you on the other side of this incursion.Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Julian Hilliard, and Jett Klyne. Episode 136: Halloween Ends

Episode 136: Halloween Ends

2022-10-3102:16:10

We were lucky this year gave us an extra Monday in October so we could have one final Spooky Linings for the season. And while it's not a film that meets our criteria per se, we couldn't help but squeeze Halloween Ends into the mold. It's the final chapter in the Laurie Strode timeline, and we need to talk about it. So strap in for a huge episode on this very polarizing movie as we discuss a lot of love, including Corey's strange love of milk, Mallie's love for children dying on screen, step-dads that love Step Up, and plenty more with returning guest/Michael Myers protégé JT Kelly. And remember: if you ask for no salt on your fries at McDonalds, they have to make them fresh.Halloween Ends stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Kyle Richards, James Jude Courtney, Rohan Campbell, and Omar J. Psycho ruined showers, Jaws ruined the beach, and this one ruined logging trucks. That's right; we're keeping the 2 train rolling with another sequel to a beloved (maybe?) franchise: it's 2003's Final Destination 2! The hijinks are cranked up to 11, there's plenty of gore, and this one has some of the best laugh-out-loud moments in any horror movie this side of the highway. We'll cover it all, in addition to discussions on being horny for your friend's dad on main, getting rolled back at the Walmart Mortuary, the new scent from Febreze (Pine Trees and Flesh), and a ton of other great stuff, including the return of Mark! All of that and more with returning guests Brandi and Jenn.Final Destination 2 stars Keegan Connor, Jonathan Cherry, A.J. Cook, Ali Larter, David Paetkau, James Kirk, Michael Landes, and Lynda Boyd. Oh, my kid banana! We're onto the next Spooky Lining entry with 1986's very polarizing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. While the original is a masterpiece in filmmaking, especially for low budget horror, the sequel is...different. Dennis Hopper phoning it in, Cannon Films taking a chainsaw to the runtime, and Tobe Hooper amping up the black comedy to 11 all mixed together like a cosmic gumbo (or in this case chili) to create one of the most bizarre entries in the Leatherface franchise. Dustin and Nathan dissect the film, plus they discuss Dustin's X-Men powers, our lord and savior Tubi, Mike Ehermantraut as Lefty, and a lot, lot more. This movie is...well, nobody knows, but the pod...the pod is family. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 stars Bill Moseley, Bill Johnson, Joe Bob Briggs, Jim Siedow, Kinky Friedman, Dennis Hopper, and Lou Perry.
