This is the final episode of Insights. I’m going to focus on expanding my YouTube channel with more grants training presentations. Go to thegrantdoctors.tv and subscribe (it’s free). Thanks for listening!
A brief follow-up to last week’s internal controls episode. I’m going to hammer home the need for internal controls/checks and balances over the course of the year. This stuff is serious business.
What the heck are internal controls and why are they important for managing federal grants? After the legal mumbo-jumbo, I break down internal controls “Barney Style” (but without singing that annoying song).
More examples of federal grantees failing to implement their programs and returning money to the government due to a lack of oversight and accountability. Seriously, folks. If you receive a federal grant, put in the work and implement your program. By doing otherwise, you’re hurting the people you claim you want to help.
Like sand through an hourglass, these are the days of our lives.
A brief refresher course on the need to have a written policy regarding safeguarding personally identifiable information.
Planning your organization’s federal grant seeking efforts requires looking back at the previous year’s efforts while searching for clues as to when new grants will be released. In this episode, I highlight a few websites you can use to make your planning process a little easier and more efficient.
A fond look back at this year’s episodes and a preview of what to expect in 2019. That’s a wrap for 2018. New episodes starting January 9th. Happy New Year, everyone!
You know what’s fun? Five more time when applying for federal grants. Listen, enjoy and use in good health.
Stay up to date with episode 48 or suffer your fate.
A little year-end advice for those preparing their grant’s annual performance reports or final program/financial reports. Also, a commentary on the role of federal grants at the macro and micro levels.
Short episode to go over some upcoming changes to the podcast and to share a couple things for which I’m thankful. Cheers!
Medium-quality election analysis vis a vis federal grants. (p.s. I’m not knocking my analysis skills. Because everything is so unpredictable these days, it’s darn near impossible to make really accurate predictions. Of course, if my analysis is spot on, I’ll make another episode claiming how brilliant I am. That’s how it works, right?)
A little commentary regarding private foundation grants.
In this episode, I read a news article, and offer my thoughts, about a federal grant the state of Oregon mismanaged. It ain’t pretty, folks. All stories about misspending federal grants are usually quite ugly–this one is $3 million worth of ugly; however, these stories are wonderful examples from which to learn. Enjoy!   Complete […]
Grants change from year to year, administration to administration. Instead of complaining and lamenting about it, adapt to the new circumstances and create programs that are sustainable without federal funding.
I’m counting down the days until next year’s global technology conference, CES. It’s going to be insane as always! What kind of tech is your organization studying or looking to purchase? Tweet me: @thegrantdoctors
Federal grants to start a business don’t exist. You have a better chance of spotting Big Foot riding a unicorn than you do finding a federal small business start-up grant. Nah. The way to go, if you have a small business, is federal contracting (and eventually state and local government contracting too). The federal government […]
Fire rant! How much time do we waste complaining about things that are out of our control? Complaining rarely solves anything. If you can fix something, fix it. If not, move on. Warning: there might be more rants like this in the near future. I’m going through a self-reflective phase as I approach 50.
Taking a moment to clarify my comments in last week’s episode. No, I don’t think the grants profession will have runaway bots taking over everything in 10-15 years. I think, like all technology, they’ll be used as tools to enhance our work. Beyond 15 years….who knows? In the meantime, AI will be a huge boost […]
