In this episode we bring you into a lecture that Michael gives in an Old Testament theology class that talks about Jesus being the long awaited return of a Messianic King from the line of David. This Christmas we don't just celebrate the birth of a Savior, we worship and celebrate the return of a King. The Kingdom that this King ushers in has huge implications for the future of God’s creation. Tune in to hear more about this concept and how it can help us more fully appreciate the birth of our Lord Jesus.
In this episode we had Dr. Matthew Thomas on the line and the dialogue was extremely helpful and brought a ton of insight into Paul's letters and how the early church was interpreting his ideas of faith, works of the law and justification. Over the last century biblical scholarship has made tremendous progress in breaking ground into our understanding of Jewish culture and the way language connects together in scripture. One of the breakthroughs of these studies has been the way we viewed some of Paul's language in his letters and how that affects our own discipleship and mission. The content of this conversation is built around Matthew's latest book titled "Paul's 'Works of the Law' in the Perspective of Second-Century Reception." This episode is a must listen! Our pursuit of God can often take the form of our own individual relationship apart from our community and people we interact with. We create compartments in our life where some are spiritual and others are what we would consider just the regular day to day activities. But the Bible teaches that God desires our whole lives to be filled with His Presence reflecting through us. He also desires to fulfill His purpose with humanity through communities and not individuals. What does it look like to live with a community in focus instead of our own individual agenda? Michael dives into the topic and presents a thought that our community of God's family is actually one of the greatest ways that we grow as individuals and is also the only way His Mission in the world can be accomplished. In today’s episode we had New Testament scholar Patrick Schreiner on the line to discuss his book “The Kingdom of God and the Glory of the Cross.” We talked about an aspect that much Gospel preaching and teaching often misses, and that’s Jesus’ royal assignment of being enthroned as King. Yet, Jesus wasn’t the King the first century was expecting, because He wasn’t like any King they had seen before. Patrick’s book dives into the concept of the Kingdom of God and points us to the Cross with a fresh perspective that brings the transformation and redemption that the Gospel Announcement was always meant to embody. In this episode we had Dr. Carmen Imes who is an incredible Author and Old Testament Scholar on the line with us. The topic was bearing God's Name and why the Covenant God made with Israel at Mt. Sinai has huge implications and meaning for Christians today. Have you ever heard the commandment do not take the Lord's name in vain? I'm willing to bet after listening to this episode you're going to have a whole new appreciation for what the 2nd commandment in the Ten Commandments really is saying. God wasn't just making sure Israel didn't use a swear word with His name in it. Israel was a dislocated, unorganized and traumatized group of people who had just been freed from oppression and slavery. God's Name was being bestowed upon them as a blessing and it brought purpose, security and identity to this unorganized group of people getting ready to become a nation. Carrying God's Name meant so much more in that moment than we often realize. Tune in to this episode to learn more about this as Dr. Imes unpacks sections of her book.
