And they’re ready to expand their creative powers. If you’re teaching in similar spaces, here is a list of tools, design challenges, and creative tasks that I’ve tried and recommend (I have no affiliation with any of these brands, products, or sites). I will never forget one of my high school science teachers. He was a good man. A decent person. His instructional practices weren’t exactly progressive, but he meant well. The biggest problem for him was that he had a very short fuse. Get under his skin, and things could really unravel. He would raise his voice. His skin would start changing colors. He would throw chalk at students. He would smash his speaking podium on the floor. When it comes to names I trust in education, Danny Steele and Todd Whitaker are near the top of that list. They love people. They’re passionate about learning. They’re bold and don’t hesitate to tell it like it is. Essential Truths for Teachers isn’t a book about instructional practice. It’s not about classroom management techniques, the best uses of technology, or assessment. This book is more of a manifesto. It’s about the fundamental beliefs and values that teachers need to own in order to be successful. It’s a quick and easy read. I have no affiliation and gain nothing from sales of this book, but I highly recommend it. What follows are 17 essential truths that every teacher in the world should hear. Welcome to the last edition of Saturday Morning Teacher Talk for 2023 and the indefinite future. I’ve enjoyed doing these mini-episodes but will be changing up my content format in 2024. Education X Posts Featured in This Episode: Teacher2Teacher asks: How do we let our students know their work is amazing? Joelie McCrary urges teachers to display student learning as much as possible. Tony Vincent shares a fun Friday entry: Quick Draw (found at quickdraw.withgoogle.com). Sketch a given word and see if the AI can guess your word based on your drawing. Tyler Rablin observes that students are more willing to take risks in their writing pieces or project designs when we de-emphasize grading. Trevor MacKenzie promises that co-designing learning experiences with and for students can be powerful stuff if only we can embrace our vulnerabilities and check our egos at the door. Pav Wander says that keeping a space at the back of her classroom for alternate seating has been very freeing and comfortable for her students (with picture). Stephanie Barrientos asks how we can better support student learning needs without burning out teachers. Susan Jachymiak says that sometimes teachers just need a reminder that we are all doing our best and we are doing enough.  Tyler Rablin points out that when students use AI to complete an assignment, they are manifesting the belief that good grades are the ultimate goal - not learning. I sign off and thank my faithful viewers and listeners for tuning into this show throughout 2023. These weekly editions of Saturday Morning Teacher Talk will not continue in 2024, but you'll hear from me on the Teachers on Fire podcast interviews which will continue to air here. Katie White shares a reproducible framework for student goal-setting that includes My Goal, Materials and Resources, Prior Knowledge and Skills, and Action Steps. Trevor MacKenzie encourages teachers to stick with the cultures of student self-reflection, feedback, and revision that we are building in our classrooms.  Teacher 2 Teacher shares three daily formative questions that teachers can ask themselves about their own practice (credit: Donita Hicks). Tyler Rablin asks why we would never accept public performance reviews for teachers on the walls of our staff rooms but we do just that to our primary students. Roy Smith asks us NOT to tell our students "You should know this already." Zoe Branigan-Pipe sings the praises of a retired principal who left a positive impact on his community. Jason Kennedy reminds us that even as we savour the final bell on Friday, some of our students aren't celebrating quite so much. Let's make sure they feel the love while they're in our care. Julie Ann puts a positive spin on things, expressing that although November was "exceptionally brutal," she's looking for a positive momentum shift as she heads into November. Jay Wamsted comments on a narrative that we're seeing around teacher social media: the idea that admins just keep piling more on teacher plates until they reach the point of burnout. Melissa Aveling shares a fun text prompt that she applied to Microsoft's text-to-image tool to generate a cartoon-like self-portrait.
