“The mindset adjustments that gradually changed my perspective began by not taking anything personally or judging strange behavior negatively.” Goodwill is the currency upon which the Chinese Guanxi engine runs, and Face is the lubricant that keeps things running smoothly. Giving Face is easier with an attitude adjustment, or it may be perceived as disingenuous. Face is an important facet of Chinese business culture and invaluable as a means to reciprocate goodwill. The ramifications of losing Face or causing a loss of Face are obvious, but the most important skill for playing the China game inside the Chinese arena may be allowing others to preserve their Face.Learning how to give others a 台阶下 Táijiēxià to preserve their Face will pay numerous dividends over time.Practical Definition: 台阶下 Táijiēxià are the delivered words and gestures that allow someone to preserve their Face after a mistake.THE CHINESE HONEYMOON PERIOD highlights 10 Chinese cultural concepts that are widely misunderstood but essential for understanding HOW Chinese people think, WHY they behave the way they do, and HOW to create more positive communication patterns that lead to more constructive cooperation.LinkedIn Post on Feb 21, 2022https://www.linkedin.com/posts/genejhsu_do-you-know-how-to-allow-others-to-preserve-activity-6901753338581409792-uqeABetween Two Worlds (original song inspired by Eileen Gu)https://youtu.be/Ckeq8X4imQIAll ADD YOUR VOICE posts, videos, and podcasts updated weeklyhttps://www.genejhsu.com/addyourvoicePre-order THE CHINESE HONEYMOON PERIOD (February 18, 2021)https://www.genejhsu.com/chinesehoneymoonFollow me on LinkedIn and join the conversationshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/genejhsu/Subscribe to the China Myth Podcasthttps://www.genejhsu.com/chinamythpodcastWatch the China Myth Podcast on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/c/GeneHsu
“Words NEVER reflect a person's underlying emotions or meaning in a high-context culture such as China. Therefore, expecting double standards without judgment is the only way to retain a positive attitude.”A life-altering experience is one of those rare occasions a person’s core beliefs are instantly transformed, while most changes are gradual and less noticeable. While each person’s beliefs are unique, we all have more in common with those who grew up in a similar environment around the same time in history. Our core beliefs affect our judgment, especially of another person’s actions and behavior.Self-awareness is essential to reduce the consequences of judging others, and the more we can grasp how someone else thinks, the more we should be able to create new communication patterns with them.Practical Definition: 想法 Xiǎngfǎ is a set of beliefs that are derived from a person’s attitude, emotions, and desire to preserve Face—-IT’S EQUIVALENT TO THEIR FAITH.THE CHINESE HONEYMOON PERIOD highlights 10 Chinese cultural concepts that are widely misunderstood but essential for understanding HOW Chinese people think, WHY they behave the way they do, and HOW to create more positive communication patterns that lead to more constructive cooperation.LinkedIn Post on Feb 14, 2022https://www.linkedin.com/posts/genejhsu_is-china-a-land-of-contradictions-chinese-activity-6899036813735137280-uAPGSpecial thanks to all the contributors to this discussion:Gabor Holch https://www.linkedin.com/in/gaborholch/John Dorris https://www.linkedin.com/in/johndorris/Andre Faict https://www.linkedin.com/in/andr%C3%A9-faict-%E8%B4%B9%E8%89%BE%E7%89%B9-%E3%83%95%E3%82%A7%E3%82%AF%E3%83%88-00bb7119/Juliette Pitt https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliette-p-845206143/Iain Hoggarth https://www.linkedin.com/in/iain-hoggarth-084200a0/Cristina Arcaini https://www.linkedin.com/in/cristinaarcaini/Anastasia Chevtchenko https://www.linkedin.com/in/monacolaclasse/Marco Andreozzi https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcoandreozzi/Between Two Worlds (original song inspired by Eileen Gu)https://youtu.be/Ckeq8X4imQIAll ADD YOUR VOICE posts, videos, and podcasts updated weeklyhttps://www.genejhsu.com/addyourvoicePre-order THE CHINESE HONEYMOON PERIOD (February 18, 2021)https://www.genejhsu.com/chinesehoneymoonFollow me on LinkedIn and join the conversationshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/genejhsu/Subscribe to the China Myth Podcasthttps://www.genejhsu.com/chinamythpodcastWatch the China Myth Podcast on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/c/GeneHsu
From the time I was old enough to imagine who I was and who I wanted to be, I always felt like I was caught between two worlds. I wrote this song based on my personal experience growing up in Atlanta, GA (USA), and I incorporated it into my latest book long before the manuscript was written. As my book is being published (February 18, 2022), I discovered someone that personifies how being caught "between two worlds" can become a symbol that unites us all. The Chinese Honeymoon Period is available on Amazon, iBooks, B&N, and I hope it inspires you to learn how Chinese people think, why they behave the way they do, and how to create new communication patterns that lead to more constructive cooperation. Watch Video https://youtu.be/Ckeq8X4imQI Amazon (Kindle) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09NS1CVPG/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_W1VTRPJ6DWD5Y6WH61YW Apple (iBooks) https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-chinese-honeymoon-period/id1610019588Barnes & Noble (B&N) https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-chinese-honeymoon-period-gene-j-hsu/1141004907

Listen to my conversation (just 3 minutes long) with Sophia about the best practices for negotiating with Chinese people, especially when they are non-committal.And leave me a question or comment. There is nothing more important in our world today than improving how we communicate and negotiate with Chinese people.https://www.genejhsu.com/chinamythpodcast
There is a "literal truth" and a "relative truth " with ALL THINGS CHINA. Literally, NO ONE precisely knows what happened except Peng Shuai and her accused, Zhang Gaoli. That said, you probably want to know what happened in "absolute terms" relative to Western values and the #METOO movement. However, it is also valuable to examine situations like these in the proper cultural context, as a means to attain a more desirable outcome.Read the blog https://www.genejhsu.com/blog/pengshuai

How do you embrace another way of thinking when it is vastly different from your own?ANSWER = Decode their 心态 (xīntài) and reprogram your attitudeIn Chinese culture, 心态 (xīntài) goes beyond how someone thinks. It includes the state of their psyche and attitude toward how certain things make them feel based on the associated Face or Mianzi.A person's 心态 (xīntài) is an integral aspect of their mentality, but the tipping points that trigger an adverse reaction are largely unknown to most Westerners.DOWNLOAD CHINA MYTH PODCAST LISTENER'S GUIDEhttps://www.genejhsu.com/chinamythpodcast-cheatsheetChina Myth Podcast episodes are also published as The Chinese Honeymoon Period short stories on Kindle Vella.https://www.amazon.com/The-Chinese-Honeymoon-Period/dp/B09756P11G/ Every Tuesday, there is a YouTube Live Recap Q&A Chinese Concept Reviewhttps://www.youtube.com/c/GeneHsu
