HOPE not hate has today released its annual State of Hate report, titled ‘Pessimism, Decline and a Rising Radical Right’.It is *the* go-to place for analysis of the far right, growing trends, fresh investigations and up-to-date profiles of all the key figures and groups. There’s nothing else out there like it.On this episode of the podcast, Nick and Joe go over the broad takeaways from the report before having an in depth discussion on the topic of the growing Radical Right influence in the Conservative Party. This is an important story which reflects the growing toxicity in mainstream politics. The pair talk about where this group has come from, what it exists to achieve and how big an influence it, and its associated media environment, has on our politics. To close, they touch on two other stories, the first is a new investigation into a member of the Patriotic Alternative splinter group, The Homeland Party, who is Chair of a Community Council near Dundee. The other is a disturbing article into the extremism of a far-right commentator named Steve Laws. Both blogs are linked in the comments, and should be approached with caution.Cheers,X—LINKS:State of Hate 2024Jamie Brown from HomelandThe Extremism of Steve LawsPromoted by Nick Lowles on behalf of HOPE not hate at 167-169 Great Portland St, 5th Floor, W1W 5PF

On Thursday 23rd November, a 49-year-old Irish citizen, originally from Algeria but who had lived in Ireland for 20 years, committed a heinous knife attack on children at a primary school in Parnell Square East in Dublin.Quickly, far-right and anti-migrant activists and agitators turned to social media, spreading a range of misinformation about the attack, including that the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant.Within hours Dublin was ablaze, as rioters set police cars, buses and a tram alight and looted shops, causing over an estimated €10 million of damage. But how did this happen? Is the Irish far-right larger and stronger than previously thought? And how do antifascists and Irish society more broadly respond to such a violent outburst? To discuss this, and events in Dublin in more detail, we welcome the historian and author, Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc, onto the podcast.N.B. - During the course of the podcast, "The Diggers" are mentioned at one point. This ought to have been "The Levellers".—Pádraig has written several books on the Irish Civil War.- Several are available through Mercier Press.- Pádraig’s forthcoming book on political violence in Ireland (published Feb 2024) will be available through Merrion Press.—SUPPORT HOPE NOT HATE:If you’d like to support HOPE not hate, why not pick up some merch from our online shop?—🔊 "nyoko - Flowing Into The Darkness" is under a Creative Commons license (CC BY 3.0).  Soundcloud:  / redowthered   Music promoted by BreakingCopyright: https://bit.ly/b-into-darkness
On Armistice Day, 2000 far right activists and football hooligans descended on London under the guise of "defending" the Cenotaph from pro-Palestine demonstrators. 10 days ago, Britain's hooligan chat groups were filled with the usual discussion of football and beer. But they quickly mobilised as the (now former) Home Secretary Braverman branded  pro-Palestine demonstrations as "hate marches", and as the The Daily Mail and Douglas Murray suggested the Cenotaph was under threat. All this coupled with Tommy Robinson's return to X, and his calls for a new anti-Islam far right street movement. The result: chaos on the streets of London, as far right activists and football hooligans battled police and attempted to confront Pro-Palestine demonstrators.HOPE not hate had teams on the ground and embedded within the far right all day, feeding live information about what exactly was going on and where.HOPE not hate's CEO, Nick Lowles, makes an appearance on Radio 43 to give us the full run-through of the precursors to the carnage, how the itself day panned out, and what the backlash has been for those on the march and for Tommy Robinson himself. With over 100 arrests already and presumably many more to come as police trawl through footage, it's looking as though Saturday will go down as another costly moment for Britain's far right.LINKS:Here's our analysis of how the hooligan chat groups turned to threats of violence. If you value our research and intelligence operations, please consider supporting HOPE not hate.Promoted by Nick Lowles on behalf of HOPE not hate Registered office Suite 1, 7th Floor, 50 Broadway, London SW1H 0BL, United Kingdom.
On this episode, Nick and Joe discuss what is a very fast-moving situation. The far-right are mobilising in London this weekend in opposition to a demonstration calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Near the centre of this is Tommy Robinson, who was allowed back onto X (Twitter) on Monday, and who has mentioned repeatedly that he’s wanted to get the English Defence League (EDL) back together.Home Secretary Braverman’s recent comments calling pro-Palestine demonstrations “hate marches” have contributed to firing up an already hostile, and increasingly energised, mass of the former far-right street movement. Along with worrying rumblings from the underground, the literal Nazis in the National Front look set to make their Remembrance Day march to the Cenotaph as usual, whilst somehow avoiding being labelled a “hate march” by our Home Secretary…It’s a muddied picture, but Joe helps us to get to grips with what we should expect to see. Thanks for listeningXP.s. Apologies for the background chainsaw noise towards the start and the end of the podcast - please do bear with us, it does go away after a short while.
In some breaking news, HOPE not hate researchers have unearthed the deeply alarming views of the Conservative candidate for London Mayor, Susan Hall. Hall has liked posts endorsing Enoch Powell, Islamophobic tropes about Sadiq Khan, supported the myth that the 2020 American election was stolen from Donald Trump and expressed a disdain for the press and democracy. But what ought to happen now?On this episode of Radio 43, Nick and Georgie sit down to discuss the ins and outs of the shocking Susan Hall revelations, what the party needs to do now and how this case sits within the broader context of concerning Conservative Party incidents.HOPE not hate has been banging the drum about the scale of anti-Muslim views within the Conservatives for many years, and Hall’s candidacy suggests that little is being done to make sure that those in the party with deeply worrying views are rooted out.As part of this campaign, we have written to the Chair of the Conservative party, Greg Hands, presenting a dossier of evidence and stating that the party must suspend Hall and undertake a full investigation into her.Help make this happen by signing our open letter.Read the full, shocking details into the Susan Hall case.
The episodes are coming thick and fast at the moment, and here we are back again with another Radio 43.On Monday, the first asylum seekers arrived at the Bibby Stockholm barge in Dorset. The plan has gone ahead despite the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) condemning the boat as a “potential deathtrap” due to serious fire safety concerns. Across the country, tensions are rising as the Government continues to place asylum seekers in hotels, barges and barracks, and the far right try to use it to their advantageOn the show this week (which is something of a follow-up to last week), HOPE not hate’s Anki Deo and Misbah Malik make their debuts, talking Nick through the last few months of community responses to far right, anti-migrant demonstrations. In doing so, they share lessons that we can take away about how communities have come together in various ways to see off the far right threat, and they let our listeners know about the ways in which HOPE not hate can help them respond effectively.Big thank you to Misbah and Anki for coming on the podcast. And thanks to you for listening!P.S. This episode was recorded before Lee Anderson MP’s vile comments, which we otherwise would have discussed.— LINKSHere are a few links of things mentioned in the show:Stoking the Flames reportCommunities homepage Llantwit Major blog
On this episode of the HOPE not hate podcast, Nick sits down with the Editor of Joyzine, Paul Maps, to talk about a forthcoming fundraising campaign that Paul and his team are running to raise money for HOPE not hate.Joyzine is an independent zine that covers music, film, books, art and theatre, and it has a real activist element directly at its heart. Next weekend, Joyzine will be celebrating its 20th birthday with a two layer event at The Old Library in New Cross. Across two stages over the Saturday and the Sunday, there will be artists performing from a variety of genres, with the things uniting them being a strong independent spirit and a message of solidarity and unity. On the episode, Paul takes us back to the origins of Joyzine, what the driving ethos is and the relationship between music and activism, before giving us a full run down of the weekend along with a sneak preview of what is sure to be an incredible 4 part compilation album which will also be raising funds for HNH.To close out the conversation, Paul gives us some recommendations for some artists to check out.A big thank you to Paul and everyone at Joyzine for all their efforts with this amazing project. If you want to get a ticket for the weekender, then head here: www.tinyurl.com/joyzine20 The event page is here: https://fb.me/e/4uopzrdtFHead on over to Joyzine’s website for the latest reviews and features: www.joyzine.orgThanks for listening!--♪ Highball (Prod. by Lukrembo) Link : https://youtu.be/sBJ2bUIVcwI
Welcome to episode 46 of Radio 43. This episode takes a similar form to the last one, in that it serves as a deep-dive into one particular topic: anti-migrant demonstrations. There’s no getting away from the fact that this has become a really unifying focus for the far right this year. HOPE not hate has been monitoring closely, and there’s been over 60 anti-migrant demonstrations that have taken place on town streets and at temporary accommodation around the country in 2023. But where did this all come from? How far is government rhetoric and policy encouraging the far right on the ground? How are local tensions being exploited by far right activists? And to what extend is the media helping to increase divisions? On this episode, Nick is joined by Director of Research Joe Mulhall and Director of Policy Rosie Carter, to pick through the features of a trend of activism that has been a real concern throughout 2023.Thank you for checking out the podcast. If you’d like to read more on this subject, have a look at these two links:Six Months of Far-Right Anti-Migrant ProtestsStoking The Flames ReportOh, very infrequently on this episode there’s a small electrical hum which lasts for a few seconds. No idea where that has come from but will look into it ahead of the next episode which will be at the start of August.Cheers,X
They say that good things come to those who wait…in which case, this episode needs to be the best one we’ve ever done.Apologies to all for another short hiatus, but here we are - back with another episode. On the show this week, Joe and Georgie sit down to talk Nick through what’s been going on with a new campaign and investigation into Tommy Robinson.Around the World in 80 Lies tells the story of Tommy Robinson's libels, lies and luxury lifestyle. As HNH researchers have discovered, Tommy Robinson's been living a life of luxury - all the while sending out emails begging supporters for cash - whilst running roughshod over the law and breaking a court order by releasing a libellous film. On the episode, Joe explains the background and Georgie talks us through what the campaign has looked like.Cheers for listening, sorry again about the wait. There'll be at least one more this month, potentially another one next week as well.XLINKS:The blog is quite a read and you can check it out here: https://hopenothate.org.uk/2023/07/11/around-the-world-in-80-lies-the-story-of-tommy-robinsons-libels-lies-and-luxury-lifestyle/If you want to sign our letter to the Attorney General, you can do so here: https://secure.hopenothate.org.uk/page/128814/petition/1 You can chip-in to our legal fundraiser here: https://secure.hopenothate.org.uk/page/129263/donate/1
Hello! It’s been a mere 5 weeks since the last episode, and there’s much to dig into.Joe has managed to tear himself away from his new hobby in British rivers to sit down with Nick for a discussion on the massive split in Patriotic Alternative. The two examine the context, the split itself and its fallout, and try to get to the bottom of some recent claims by other antifascists that the breakaway faction, despite being less than a month old, is now the most dangerous group in the UK.Elsewhere, it’s polling day tomorrow (May 4th) and as usual the far-right is in a dismal state electorally. The pair look at the various parties fielding candidates and work out where the far-right goes next after yet another embarrassing showing. Finally, today HNH researchers have sent a dossier to the authorities showing what we believe to be electoral malfeasance on the part of Britain First’s Paul Golding. Joe gives us a summary of what’s in the dossier and what the repercussions could be…As always, thanks for listening!X
Right, it’s been ages since the last Radio 43, very sorry! It has been a ridiculous start to the year and Nick and Joe have struggled to find the time to sit down to record, but they’re back now with a BUMPER edition of the podcast. On this week’s episode, the pair take a look back over the previous 3 months to pick out some trends and developments on the far-right. With so many anti-migrant demonstrations going off around the country, it’s been a worrying time.Elsewhere the two discuss an extraordinary story from State of Hate 2023 about an anti-Islam group that has been operating at the heart of the British establishment for over a decade, before turning to two new HNH investigations: one into the “Hull Hitler”, Alek Yerbury, and the other a disgraced, and surely soon to be ex-, UKIP councillor. There’s a load to speak about. Thanks for your patience whilst we’ve been away!X
Nick and Joe are back a week later than planned because poor old Joe lost his voice. But thankfully it has returned just in time for him to belt out some carols and, more importantly but less seasonally, talk about the far-right on this podcast. It’s a show full of big stories this week as the pair begin by treading familiar podcast terrain: the continued links between Patriotic Alternative and the extreme far-right, in this case the Nordic Resistance Movement - a properly nasty bunch.Next they move onto a big story that came courtesy of HOPE not hate: a fascist in the Tory Party down in Kent. They keep turning up there, though heavens knows why…HOPE not hate torpedoed another nazi Blood & Honour gig, this time up in Bathgate in West Lothian. It was going to be a big one, but it ended the same way as all the others - with lots of dejected nazis and a good chunk of money down the drain too. Finally the pair talk about Kanye “Ye” West’s disturbing appearance on the Alex Jones show and his continued descent into vicious and violent antisemitism, before discussing no-platform and Twitter more broadly. If we don’t get another one in before the end of the year then have a great Christmas, thanks for listening.X—Prod. Following a longer hiatus than planned, Nick and Joe are back with a new episode of Radio 43.The far-right terror attack in Dover has raised a lot of questions, not just about the far-right politics of the terrorist himself, but of the state of public anti-migrant discourse in Britain. We must talk of about this man’s engagement with far-right figures and his radicalisation, and deal properly with this pipeline. But we must also ask what it says about the party of government that just a few days prior to the attack, the Home Secretary used established far-right rhetoric in speaking about an “invasion of our southern coast”?Elsewhere, there’s yet ANOTHER National Action-linked activist in Patriotic Alternative. How many is that now? The numbers keep adding up. Oh and this one is also a “Reverend” in a white supremacist cult. There will be more sweaty armpits amongst PA activists as the talk of proscription grows…Finally, the pair look at Tommy Robinson’s most extreme article ever, in which he’s openly antisemitic and engages with racist pseudoscience. Tommy’s COVID conspiracy journey has ended up in a nightmare of antisemitism.Cheersx—Prod. by Nick Spooner
With the hit ITV drama series The Walk-In now finished, HOPE not hate CEO Nick Lowles, Head of Intelligence Matthew Collins and Campaigns & Communications Director Georgie Laming sit down to discuss more about the incredible true story behind the drama. In the process, amongst a huge array of topics, the three also talk about disrupting nazi gigs, the role of women in the far-right and the pressure Nick and Matthew were put under by the security services during the National Action case. They also spoke about two fantastic new publications from HNH:'The Walk-In: Fascists, Lies & Spies’ by Matthew Collins‘TOMMY’ by Nick LowlesThis recording was taken from a webinar hosted by HNH on Monday 7th November 2022.—Produced by: Nick Spooner— ♪ Highball (Prod. by Lukrembo) Link : https://youtu.be/sBJ2bUIVcwI
This special episode of the HOPE not hate (HNH) podcast is a recording of one of our fringe meetings at this year’s Labour conference. It features a conversation between Kevin Maguire from The Daily Mirror and HNH’s Head of Intelligence, Matthew Collins, about the true story behind the dramatic new ITV series The Walk-In starring Stephen Graham as Matthew Collins. The Walk-In tells the incredible true story about how Matthew worked with a mole, Robbie Mullen, inside the then-banned neo-nazi terror group, National Action, to foil a murder plot, save the life of the then-Labour MP Rosie Cooper, send the plotter to jail and ultimately bring down National Action for good. It’s a remarkable story brought to life by Stephen Graham, Jason Flemyng and others. In this conversation between Matthew and Kevin, the pair examine the story behind National Action, running a mole inside the group, the pressure Matthew was put under by the security services, and the psychological toll the whole case has had on Matthew and Robbie. To close, the pair field a few questions from the floor.TW: This episode contains discussions about subjects that people might find disturbing or upsetting.Matthew's new book, telling the full story behind The Walk-In, is available now from the HNH webstore: https://hopenothate.bigcartel.com/product/the-walk-in-fascists-spies-lies------Podcast produced by Nick Spooner------♪ Alone (Prod. by Lukrembo) Link : https://youtu.be/fLXLhOyo-2w
Whilst flash storms hitting the UK and British politics still in a state of tumult, Nick and Joe get together to discuss some twists on familiar topics: low turnout at a far-right demo, fascists staring down the barrel of some tricky legal problems and the mainstream media failing to grasp the severity of platforming far right figures.-- Stephen Yaxley-Lennon ("Tommy Robinson") held another demo in Telford last weekend in conjunction with screening the fourth episode of his documentary series. The turnout was abysmal, which is unsurprising as Tommy and crew did very little work in building for it. Joe has the latest and tells us what we can expect from Tommy in the future.Elsewhere, the guys dive into the scoop that HNH published yesterday about a secret nazi gig currently set to take place in Widnes next Saturday (17th), and the campaign we've launched to stop it. Joe gives us the latest on Patriotic Alternative who, whilst remaining extremely active, are facing yet more publicity problems thanks to two of its more high-profile figures. Finally, why did GB News give airtime to a Swedish far-right activist who has previously denied the Holocaust, and why do mainstream and semi-mainstream media outlets never learn?Like, share and subscribe to the podcast!--Produced by: Nick Spooner
It has been a decade since HOPE not hate released its first groundbreaking Fear & HOPE report, the biggest investigation into identity undertaken in Britain. This year, following ten years of political upheaval, HNH has released a new Fear & HOPE report to better understand how social attitudes have changed during that time. In the recovery from a global pandemic but heading into economic recession, amidst a political context of culture wars, Brexit fallouts and fracturing across the political spectrum, our research finds a new alignment of identity politics, and the emergence of a new reactionary right threat. To tie in with the report's release Rosie Carter, its author and HOPE not hate's Director of Policy, sits down with Anthony Painter, Director of Policy and External Affairs at the Chartered Management Institute who co-authored the original Fear & HOPE.Taking a broad view, the two examine the key takeaways from the report and try to establish what has changed in the intervening years. You can read the Fear & HOPE 2022 report here: https://hopenothate.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Fear-HOPE-2022-FINAL-1.pdf------Podcast produced by Nick Spooner------♪ Alone (Prod. by Lukrembo) Link : https://youtu.be/fLXLhOyo-2w
It’s been a hectic time at HOPE not hate as we’ve just successfully netted one of our biggest fish in recent years; a right whopper by the name of Andrew Tate.Tate is a violent misogynist who shot to fame on social media, especially TikTok, projecting a supposedly glamorous lifestyle of fast cars and wealth whilst simultaneously using his platform to share his disgusting views towards women, as well as his homophobia, ableism and Islamophobia. On TikTok, Tate content has been viewed many billions (that’s not a typo) of times, and he has developed a cult-like following of impressionable young men and boys. Large numbers of young men have been consuming his content and he is widely celebrated in those circles as having brought back “traditional masculinity”.Tate has links to various significant far-right figures, including Tommy Robinson who he knows from growing up in Luton. And his combination of gateway “influencer” content, extremely violent, degrading and controlling behaviour towards women, his racism and his far-right connections marked him out as a real danger to young people online. This is why, last week, we launched a campaign against Tate which, in the space of less than a week, saw Tate looks many millions of followers on social media as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok all shut down his accounts and began to scrub Tate content off their sites. This was a huge win for HOPE not hate, and we couldn’t have done it without our supporters, vast numbers of whom joined our call to the tech platforms to take action. We send a big thank you to you all.In this special episode of the podcast, Nick and Joe sit down to reflect on what has been a pretty wild few days. They discuss some of the ins and outs of Andrew Tate, the trajectory of the campaign and dig into a very brazen and bizarre response video from Tate himself.EnjoyXP.S. Nick and Joe come back after a short hiatus in order to discuss the far-right and conspiracy groups’ targeting of Drag Queen Story Hour events, a series of storytelling events at public libraries during the summer holidays. The campaign has been spearheaded by Patriotic Alternative (PA) and has seen buy-in from groups across the far-right, but in recent days some have stepped away citing Patriotic Alternative’s extremism as something too toxic with which to be associated.Patriotic Alternative get another slot in the show, as the guys chat about the new revelations unearthed by HOPE not hate researchers which once again tie PA’s de-facto number three in command, Sam Melia, to the now-banned neo-nazi terror gang, National Action. PA have always stuck doggedly to a position denying Melia’s involvement in the terror group, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. But now, thanks to this new information, that can really be put to bed once and for all…Finally, Alex Jones of InfoWars has had a really bad and embarrassing week. It’s a big story, with big sums of money involved…Don’t forget to like, share and subscribe to the podcast.See you next time.
