Logan Holloman | NexGen Pastor | July 7, 2024 “God loves us, and we have the opportunity to love others as he loves us, not in big things, but in small things in great love”— Mother Teresa, 1979 Nobel Peace Prize Speech 1 John 4:10 (NIV)This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Romans 5:8 (NIV)But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Mark 10:45 (NIV)"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Romans 12:1 (NIV)Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Ephesians 5:2 (NIV)And walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Mark 2:16-19 (NIV)These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. What Gets in the Way? Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV)Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Mark 1:14-15(NIV)After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife. But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this. What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away. Matthew 22:29-30 (NIV)Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 19:28-29 (NIV)Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. Reflection Questions: 1. What aspects of church culture can make it challenging for single people?2. What perspectives about singleness do we need to have in order to navigate singleness in a healthy and biblical way?3. What is God’s perspective on singleness?4. What are some wrong perspectives we can have about singleness? What are some lies we can believe about being single?5. Why is important for all people in a church family to have the perspective that singleness is valuable and viable way to live out our walk of faith?6. Reflect on these statements… Singleness does mean no intimacy. Intimacy does not mean romance/sex. Agree or Disagree? Explain. How can single people cultivate intimacy outside of romantic/sexual relationships?7. How can married people in a church family love and care for single people? And vice versa? What are tangible ways we can love and support each other?8. If you are married, do you have single people from the church that are close to you? How could you grow your connection with them?9. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing… This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” Galatians 2:11-14 (NIV)When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. Matthew 15:18 (NIV)But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. Psalm 19:14 (NIV)May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing in your sight Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Romans 10:9 (NIV)If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Matthew 12:36-37 (NIV)“But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” James 3:9-10 (NIV)With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Full of Grace Proverbs 16:24 (NIV)Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Proverbs 15:1(NIV)A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Luke 4:22 (NIV)All spoke well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. 2. Seasoned with salt Proverbs 12:18The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. 2 Timothy 4:2 (NIV)Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 3. Know how to answer everyone Proverbs 12:25 (NIV)Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up. Ephesians 4:29a (NIV)Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs… Reflection Questions: 1. Jesus saw the needs of others – ahead of his own. John 13:1 (NIV) 2. Jesus used his authority to serve others. Mark 9:35 3. Jesus served those who were difficult to love. John 13:2 (NIV) John 13:15-17 (NIV) 1 Peter 5:6 (NIV) “If anyone would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step. The first step is to realize that one is proud. And a biggish step, too. At least, nothing whatever can be done before it. If you think you are not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed.” — C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity   John 13:34-35 (NIV) “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Reflection Questions: 1. In light of 1 Peter 5:5, why does God oppose pride and show favor to humility?2. Who is someone you could serve now that is difficult to love? What is a practical way to serve them?9. In John 13:15-17, Jesus promises a blessed life if we follow his example. How can living this way live to a blessed life? Won’t we miss out if we constantly focusing on others? Who will look out for us and meet our needs?10. Humility is sometimes referred to as the “shyest” of all virtues. When you to talk about it or focus on it, it goes away. What do you think that means? How are we then to work on growing in humility?11. How are “insecurity” and “arrogance” both a form of pride? How can insecurity be a more subtle form of pride? How can insecurity even look like humility? How can we see that in ourselves? Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | June 2, 2024 Ephesians 4:31-32Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, JUST AS in Christ God forgave you. Matthew 18:23-35“Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.“At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.“But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.“His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’“But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.“Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.“This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” Observations from Parable:1) Forgiveness is the decision to cancel a debt.2) Unforgiveness puts us in prison. 3) The cross of Jesus gives us the power to forgive. Practical Steps to Forgiveness:1) Who do I need to forgive?2) What is the debt that they owe?3) Cancel the debt.4) Don’t reopen the case. Matthew 6:12 (NIV)And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. How has Christ forgiven me?How am I to forgive others?With whom do I need to start? Reflection Questions: 1. How have you seen unforgiveness have a negative effect in your life? In the life of people you know?2. What makes forgiving people that have wronged you difficult for you? What causes you to get stuck?3. Where have you seen success in forgiving people that have wronged you? What were some of the positive results you experienced?4. In regards to Matthew 18:34-35, Why do you think that Jesus gives such a strong rebuke to those that refuse to forgive others?5. Jesus describes unforgiveness as a torturous prison sentence. What do you think is the “prison” that we experience? How have you or how are you experiencing this?6. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ” But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” Luke 19:3-6 (NIV)He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 4:1-2a (NIV)What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. “You know what the problem is? I’m just not getting what I want.” Question: What do I want that I am not getting? James 4:2b-3 (NIV)You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. Jim Keena | Guest Speaker | April 28, 2024 A Follower of Jesus Unfollowed but Re-followed Jesus. The Backstory: One day, a man named Simon and some other fishermen had been fishing all night in the Sea of Galilee (Luke 5:5). They’d not caught anything, when Jesus gave an unsolicited fishing tip (Luke 5:4-5). After instructing them to cast their nets into the deep water, they caught a boatload of fish (Luke 5:4-7). Jesus then said to Simon, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people” (Matt. 4:18-20, Mark 1:17). In addition, Jesus told Simon that he would be called Peter, which means “Rock” (John 1:42). And that was when, Peter left everything and became one of the 12 disciples, a follower of Jesus. “Peter could be brash, impetuous, impulsive, and vacillating. His passion often got ahead of his head. There were times when Peter was a windbag, a blowhard. He made these unnecessary—as well as empty—boasts. In the upper room, Peter bragged to Jesus that he would lay down his life for Jesus (John 13:37).” —John E. Johnson The Story:Feed My Sheep When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:15-17 (NIV) Follow Me Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, Obedience is not perfection “In the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshiping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship [...] is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough…Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” Jesus- invitation to be made whole “do you want to be well” Pool- what we look to for wholeness and healing. What’s your pool? John 5:8-15 (NIV)Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’” So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; …” Romans 3:25-26 (NIV)God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.We love because he first loved us.
