Howdy,Well the time has come, and I did it my way.Plus or Minus is entering Archive Mode. This doesn’t mean its going away, or that I’ve left the Fudge RPG sphere. All this means is that I’ve decided to focus on Indie and Small press RPGs as a whole over at I’m still going to cover Fudge based RPGs, but I’m also going to cover Fate, Icons, Blades against the Dark, Ihunt, Quest, etc., etc., etc.,So please join me on the new Podcast, I’d really appreciate it. And to those who’ve Enjoyed Plus or Minus, thank you so much, you’ve meant alot to me. Support the show (
In this exiting episode we sit down with Bradford Younie and dig into his two fudge based games “Now Playing” and “The Unexplained”. Now Playing is actually a great introduction to Fudge, it is essentially a basic Fudge build with guidelines for basing your campaign around the premise of a TV show. Bradford is very active in the Fudge community, so its far past time that I had him on.Early on I mention Ruby, the creator of Ascendancy, go checkout her kickstarter. You can join the Podcasts Facebook Group.Or catch us on the Discord.Pickup Bradford Younies games over at DriveThru (affiliate) or check them out on his website. You can also grab his new novel Bad Luck.Witchcraft is no longer available from the Eden Studios website, but it is available free of charge on Drivethru (affiliate). Thanks for listening. Support the show (
Content Warning: Mental HealthDiscord Invite: Discord.plusorminus.xyzSnagged an interview with Russell Collins, creator of the Tears of a Machine (Affiliate) RPG. Granted Tears of a Machine isn’t a Fudge RPG, but the second edition will feature Fudge/Fate derived mechanics with a unique way of utilizing Fudge dice I hadn’t thought of before. This mechanic will not be suitable for all games, but it could lead to some really clever subsystems for otherwise traditional Fudge games.Tears of a Machine is a game about teenagers piloting giant robots and fighting aliens, while trying to deal with all the normal teenage issues. Does that girl in your class like you, are your friends spreading rumors behind your back, will the giant angel your fighting bite its way through the cockpit and obliterate you? Its a pretty clever idea, explored with pretty clever mechanics. We also discuss Accessibility and I’d like to take a chance to plug Jacob Woods Accessible Gaming Quarterly, a Quarterly Zine that explores issues of accessibility in gaming, Russell Collins has taken steps to make his homepage at as accessible as possible, and is doing the same with his products so it feels like a natural fit.Just a quick note that we do discuss modeling mental health in this interview, both exploring the psychological aspects of his game, and exploring ways mental health could be explored in games. It doesn’t get too dark, but I‌ do bring up the fact that some mechanics might be interesting to explore even though I wouldn’t necessarily want to see an actual game run with them. Support the show (
Despite the fact that I’ve been stuck at home for over a week now, I haven’t actually made much progress on any of my personal projects. Since the podcast is getting a bit delayed I thought I’d dust off this episode of the now defunct “The OSR‌ Podcast” and share a really great interview I did over there. This was really early in my podcasting “Career” and it shows. You’ll notice a few skips and a couple of artifacts, it was the best I could do to clean it up.In this interview Denis McCarthy talks about his work as an illustrator, we take a trip down memory lane and talk about some of our favorite TSR‌ artists, and we go off on Star Trek for some reason. Even though this is from an OSR‌ podcast, we mostly talk about game design in general in it, so I think you’ll get alot out of it. Head over to Drive Thru RPG‌ and have a look at some of his great Stock Art, which you can use in any of your published projects. Update: Also he is (or at least was) a fellow podcaster. He stopped posting episodes of Ramblings of a Gamer and Artist last year, but there is alot of good material about his Gurps Fantasy games. Also I hope you like the bed music I’m using, its one of the background audio tracks put out by Wes Otis, you should also check out his products here. He’s doing a Deadlands Audio Kickstarter so give that a look. The Drive Thru RPG links are Affiliate Links so they do help support the Podcast. Go Forth and Fudge! Support the show (
Click here to get the Icons 1st edition bundle for just under 20 bucks from Drive Thru RPG. Howdy, this week I sit down and have a chat with Steve Kenson ( about the creation of ICONS Superpowered Roleplaying: The Assembled Edition. If you’ve ever had a look at the underlying system you’ve probably noticed some pretty interesting tweaks to the basic Fudge Mechanics. We dig into how he made a game that looks so different and yet still manages to play so much like a standard fudge game. We also dig into his history with Comic Books, Supers RPGs, his work on Mutants and Masterminds, why he’s reinvented the wheel a couple of times, and how he also happened to write one of my favorite Shadowrun Supplements of all time. There’s alot of great stuff in here. If you’d like to chat about the show you can get on our discord server by going to Discord.PlusorMinus.xyzSupport the show (
A‌ follow up to my interview with Michael Lucas about Gatecrasher. Sorry, no Amity in Fame theme song at the beginning, and no pop filter on the quickly recorded parts at the beginning and end. I really wanted to get this out ASAP‌ as I’ve been sick of and on for almost a month. But I come bearing gifts, namely an interview with Gatecrasher writer/creator Michael Warren Lucas: The Bob Ross of Apocalypse. Happy little bloodbaths! (Site: Science Fiction and Fantasy writer, technical writer, and all around fun guy. We talk about both versions of Gatecrasher, why the game didn’t really go that far, his development process, and some of his more recent work you might wanna check out at his website. Howdy folks, sorry I didn’t say so at the beginning but this is Season  2 Episode 10. Also the new Mastodon account for the show is at and the Twitter is still Big Book of DrugsTM for Cyberpunk 2020DRUG LAB 101 – Ocelots Drug Generation Rule for Cyberpunk 2020Anyway, I finally got to play Survival of the Able by Jacob Wood, which is currently on Kickstarter (Link to the Kickstarter) so go support it, there are only 6 days left to do so, and its awesome. I start the show with a brief intro to the mechanics I’m interested in seeing play out, and then come back with a discussion of what I Thought about them.We did record the session, and it will appear as an episode of The Redacted Files at a later date. I had a blast and definitely recommend the game. If the concept sounds a bit “iffy” just give it a chance, it really delivers in a big way on the premise. One thing I didn’t bring up in the show was how well designed the character sheets were. Every unique mechanic had instructions and points to mark off on the sheet. In Survival of the Able you’re a person with a disability living in a European almshouse when the Black Death arrives. Little is known about where the plague originated or how to stop it, but those who die from it are rising again—and they’re hungry for flesh. Since everyone else has succumbed to the plague, it’s up to a handful of you to make your way out of town and away to safety. You may not be the biggest, the strongest, or the fittest, but you're determined to survive.Support the show (
Happy Halloween Fudge Fans! This isn’t a “Halloween Special” as such, this is just my attempt to get something out there before the lack of inertia feels so overwhelming that I just let the show podfade. In this episode I wanted to discuss some ideas Jeff Dee has brought up over on his face book. He’s narrowed down his niche, as a gamer and game designer, to TableTop Immersive Simulation Games or TTISG. I thought that was a great chance to discuss owning up to narrative mechanics in your games rather than attaching them onto an otherwise TTISG and breaking immersion.Going forward I’ll probably be in the Fudge Bar on Saturday nights at 9 pm PST to chat about fudge, run/play pickup games, and maybe even do some Q & A. I’m especially interested in pickup fudge games though, I need to game more.If you aren’t already doing so, please follow me on whatever social networks you use. I have ~60 listeners and I’d really like to be more engaged with you guys and gals and small furry creatures from alpha centauri. Non-ZuckerbergTwitter @plusorminus_podMastodon (Distributed Open Source Social Network) @plusorminus@dice.campDiaspora (Distributed Open Source Social Network) @Capheind@pluspora.ZuckerbergInstagram @PlusorMinus_PodFacebook Plus or Minus PageSupport the show (

Where I pretend I'm LindyBeige and talk about the intersection of historical medieval arms and armor and Roleplaying games. Also I discuss the very cool combat mechanics from The Princess Bride RPG. I still find it inconceivable that the geek/nerd community isn't going nuts for this game. Its the Princess Bride for crying out loud. Everything is Awesome! In this exciting episode I talk to Wes Otis about his work in sound design and his like of 10 minute audio loops for role playing games. He isn’t really a Fudge guy, but his products are system neutral and I’ve always been really interested in background/atmospheric audio. He also talks a little about his own podcast 12 sided stories.I think I’ve finally settled on a theme song, I’ve gone with Amity in Fame’s Touching your Breath from their album Dinner for One.I also talk briefly about the new princess bride RPG. I’m a little surprised that there is so little promotion going on for it. ITs a big deal, it should be getting treated as such. I should hopefully be playing it soon, so expect more Princess Bride talk on the show.Speaking of Promotion please share out the show to anyone you know of who might be interested. Its . Just quick warning I do use the word disabled to refer to people in this one. I know its not a huge flub, but I do talk about a game designed (in part) to facilitate an understanding of people with physical limitations and it bothered me when I was listening to the episode, but I didn’t have time to rerecord. Sorry if anyone is offended. In this episode I discuss Fairy Magic a Celtic tweak on African Spirit Magic from “A Magical Medley”. This is in preparation for an instructional real play set in a fantasy version of Ireland I’m working up with my former co-host from DMvsGM. I also discuss the new content over at Fudge Genie and Jacob Woods upcoming “Survival of the Able” Fudge Roleplaying Game.LinksA Magical MedleySurvival of the Able Blood in SpaceSupport the show (

Tag your It Ep. 16

Tag your It Ep. 16

You're not your I'm aware, its incorrect for URL and laziness reasons.I know its short, and I know I didn’t manage to do an episode last week. I think I need to stop making broad proclamations about how I’m going to do the show and just do it. I’m killing the Patreon as of now, patrons will notice I didn’t put through a charge for the last episode. I really appreciate the patrons I did have, but I’m just doing this for fun. If you get something out of the podcast and you wanna help out with hosting you can still throw me a tip over at or you can use any of my affiliate links in the show notes. From now on I“m doing plus or minus whenever I can get an episode in, shooting for at least twice a month. Although I’ll still organize the show as ”seasons“ I”m not going to take time off to do batched content because I just didn’t get it done. With that out of the way, lets talk about Tags! In this episode I try to explain an idea I tried to bang out in the discord. Basically its a half way point between standard fudge, ASCB Fudge, and Fate. Instead of using Fates point economy you just count how many of your characters tags would benefit them, and add that number to your roll, and you count up how many tags would work against them and add that to the opposition. Literally you are adding the number of tags. So if your trying to calm down a horse you might have #Empathetic and #Groom which would make it roll+2 if you had #Nervous tag then you’d be rolling against Difficulty+1 see. Tags replace Skills and Attributes, but can be used with gifts and faults (or badtags). Characters start with 1 Culture Tags, 2 Background Tags, 3 Aptitude Tags and 2 Badtags or troubles.Run with it, let me know how it goes on the Discord, or by providing Feedback.  LinksASCB FudgeForever KnightFate AspectsSupport the show (
Welcome back for season 2 Fudge Fans!Sorry its been so long. I gave myself a couple of months up hoping I could stockpile material to crank out episodes more reliably this year, and instead life happened all over the place. Still, season 2 should still be a pretty great ride. In this episode I interview Jacob Wood of Accessible Games. We DiscussAccessibility as it relates to RPGsHow to write accessible gamesHow Fudge in particular is accessibleThe Psi-Punk RPGMonster Kart MayhemSurvival of the AbleI’m not entirely sure what the next episode will cover, but I am working up a series where I essentially take the rule book section by section and provide commentary, riffing, and expansion on whats written there to help new players understand it, and give experienced players a laugh. I’m also considering a series on self publishing in PDF to encourage folks to produce more fudge material. Thanks for listening, if you liked this episode please consider joining our discord, if you really liked it you can rate and review the show on itunes, and if your absolutely crazy about it you can support the show by donating through Ko-Fi, every little thing helps. First Christmas Ep. 14

Hey guys, just a look back over what I've learned from this season, and what I intend for the next. Also a surprise interview with Bnyw from the Discord/IRC about the Otherworlders IRC network. The cliff notes version of the podcast is that I'm going to create a tv-esque seasonal podcast with focused topical episodes. I'm shooting for weekly episodes between March and September (about 28 episodes), with one holiday episode each in October, November, and December (<a href="">Dicemass</a>).The Blog (<a href=""></a>) will feature news and updates instead of wedging them into the shows, and I'm also open to featuring guest posts.I appreciate all my Patrons over at Patreon, but the new way to support the show is to donate over on <a href=""></a> or by using my affiliate code on Drive Thru RPG <a href=""></a><h3>Links</h3><ul> <li><a href="">Now Playing</a></li> <li><a href="">Microfudge</a></li> <li><a href="">RPG Rescue</a></li> <li><a href="">Otherworlders IRC network</a></li></ul>&nbsp;Support the show (

The Fractal Ep. 13

<p>Unlucky 13, If I had planned it out better this would have been the Halloween episode. Ah well, such is life.<p>I'm going to stop apologizing for the audio quality since those of you on the discord made it incredibly obvious that I'm probably making mountains out of mole hills. Also I listened to some radio professionals and realized they make the exact same sounds.<p>In this episode I'm going to continue to pick apart the mechanical underpinnings of the Fudge RPG, specifically the way traits work in the game, and specifically how it gives rise to "The Bronze Rule" AKA the Supposed Fate Fractal. Its also the Fudge Fractal, the Icons Fractal, The Blood in Space Fractal, Etc.<p>Trying out Ko-fi to replace Patreon, so if you'd like to support the show please buy me a <a href="">Ko-Fi</a><p>Music is Blind Love Dub by Jeris (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. <a href=""></a> Ft: Kara Square (mindmapthat)&nbsp;<h3>Links</h3><ul> <li><a href="">Fate Fractal</a></li> <li><a href="">Powered By Fate Podcast</a></li> <li><a href="">Icons</a></li> <li>Thanks to Bynw and DarkSir23 for setting up the Eris bot on the DIscord</li> <li><a href="">Music at the Table</a></li> <li><a href="">Deadlands game music</a></li> <li><a href="">Isaac Arthur Science and Futurism</a> (<a href="">Podcast</a>)</li> <li><a href="">Now Playing</a> I think I called it Now Showing on the show for some reason, sorry.</li> <li><a href="">Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda</a></li> <li><a href="">Mindjammer</a> (<a href="">traveler version</a>)</li> <li><a href="">The Limitations of the Bronze Rule</a> by Ryan Macklin</li> <li><a href="">Fate Adversary Toolkit</a></li> <li><a href="">Organizational Conflicts</a></li> <li><a href="">Mental Damage</a></li></ul>Support the show (
Happy Halloween Ep. 12

Happy Halloween Ep. 12

Happy Halloween, its like Summerween in the Fall!<p>In this episode I explore developing Fudge horror games by pilfering other, more established, horror games for clever mechanics. To the best of my knowledge there isn't a solid long-running Fudge Horror game out there, so I'm looking at ideas that can be borrowed from the Fate Horror Toolkit, the Pacesetter RPG, and Call of Cthulhu. I also plug the upcoming "Chronicles of Future Earth" due to it having a clever dice mechanic we can snag into Fudge. Thanks for listening.<p>Support the Show on <a href=""></a><div class="entry-content"><p>Music is Blind Love Dub by Jeris (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. <a href=""></a> Ft: Kara Square (mindmapthat)<h3>Links</h3><ul> <li><a href="">Fate Horror Toolkit</a></li> <li><a href="">Pacesetter</a><ul> <li><a href="">Chill</a></li> <li><a href="">Cryptworld</a></li> <li><a href="">Rotworld</a></li> <li><a href="">Majus</a></li></ul></li> <li><a href="">Call of Cthulhu</a></li> <li>Social Media<ul> <li><a href="">Google+ Announcement</a></li> <li><a href="">MeWe, YouWe, WeAllWe for WeWe</a></li> <li><a href="">Official Mastodon account</a></li> <li><a href="">Official Twitter @Capheind</a></li> <li><a href="">Official Tumblr</a></li></ul></li> <li><a href="">Chronicles of Future Earth</a><ul> <li><a href="">Interesting Die Mechanic</a></li> <li><a href="">That show where I gushed about Mindjammer</a></li> <li><a href="">Mindjammer for Traveler</a></li></ul></li> <li><a href="">Fudge Factor</a> Articles<ul> <li><a href="">The +1 Problem</a></li> <li><a href=""&Support the show (
