This interview was recorded in January 2020 and my guest is Georgina Atwell, founder of Toppsta, the biggest review and recommendation platform for children’s books in the UK. Before creating Toppsta, Georgina worked at Penguin, DK and Apple.
We discussed: working on digital products in publishing vs at a tech company, what are Toppsta’s mission and business model, what are the most important steps to develop a new digital product. She also gives advice for people applying to entry-level roles in publishing, talks about current trends in children’s literature and recommends some of her favourite titles.

Anna Scully is Assistant Designer at Oxford University Press. She describes the main tasks and responsibilities of a text designer and the differences with working on book covers instead. We also discussed the challenges of an extremely interesting book design, with a walking camel in the running header, and the importance of maths and science for design.

John Campbell is Head of Digital Platform Strategy at Oxford University Press. In our conversation, he illustrated the main tasks of the different teams in the Digital Strategy area at OUP and he suggested not to specialise too early in your career, but to be flexible and always learn new skills.
